Appointment with Danger is a solid noir.

The film features a supporting role by Jan Sterling, who also appears in Union Station, which is also included in that Olive box set.

Watched The File on Thelma Jordan and thought the film was very, very good. Too bad the film quality was sub-par, and I wish Olive had commentary tracks on their Noirs, but Barbara Stanwyck....great as always!

I also watched File on Thelma Jordan over the weekend. It was annoying how often the wife had her parents over. I can't believe how great Barbara looked
[Show spoiler]after that car crash!
even if she did
[Show spoiler]die for her sins
as they do in these movies. It was still good fun.

Anyone in the U.S. ever buy the Spain import BLU release of Gun Crazy? If so is it considered to be the same transfer as the French release?

Well, I finally got the Italian Blu-ray of Gilda. I watched it last night, and wow, what a great Film Noir. It's probably now in my top five of the genre. Great chemistry between Glen Ford & Rita Hayworth, sharp diologue, and wonderful direction & photography from Charles Vidor & Rudolph Maté. I had no idea Maté was the DP for the Dryer films, Vampyr and The Passion of Joan of Arc as well as other famous films like Foreign Correspondent, and who went on to direct some other Film Noirs. Anyways, this is a classic and must have in everybody's Film Noir collection. So what's taking the domestic release so long?

I too love Gilda. It is one of the many reasons for which Film Noir is my favorite genre... I wish Kiss of Death with Victor Mature was available on Blu.

Rita Hayworth's dance near the end of Gilda is one of the sexiest things that I've ever seen in a movie.

It's not just that nobody else looked quite like Rita Hayworth. Nobody moved quite like Rita Hayworth. She just carried herself in a certain way that was so amazing.

not Blu-Rays but...

I picked up Columbia's Bad Girls of Film Noir Vol. 1 + 2 today at Barnes & Noble

bad1.jpg bad2.jpg

I believe these seem to become harder to find (not sure if they are considered OOP but amazon 3rd party sellers could indicate so) The fact B&N had copies of both is mainly because on specific location used to and sometimes will stock many titles that most stores don't stock and just had the stock that never sold.

Anyhow, anyone have any thoughts on these sets or films? I know some believe they don't all pass as noir but I figured for about 20.00 a volume they would be fun.

I bought both of these on Amazon for inexpensive prices just before they both went out of widespread availability last year.

To my discredit, though, I have not yet got around to watching the movies. I really need to get cracking on that. Maybe we can compare notes.

The Killer That Stalked New York (DVD from Bad Girls of Film Noir V1)

The poster should read, "A Woman in Heat, Diamonds on the Loose, and one dumb a** doctor"

image.jpg

not bad, has its moments but the ripped from the headlines cautionary preachiness is annoying. Panic in the Streets it is NOT, but Eveyln Keyes and some of the other cast are great to watch.

I think I am finally going to break down and order The Red House and Kansas City Confidential despite the DNR warning on the reviews. Other reviews around the internet, particularly from DVD Talk / Savant, are critical of the DNR but give the PQ good to high marks overall. They are both cheap enough now to make the decision easier.

I also want The Strange Love of Martha Ivers, but will continue to hold off on that one since I am hoping Paramount will pass it on to Olive. Not sure what the odds are of that happening, but am willing to wait a while longer......unless someone convinces me the Film Chest version is okay and why bother waiting on something that may never happen

Just stick with the DVD of KCC from MGM, as the DVD is MUCH better. Save your blu ray money for a better release of KCC which I heard will happen. I have heard that a better label does have it, so if youre patient just wait for that. Wait for KCC just like Martha Ivers. That blu ray from Film Chest is just horrible. I have the DVDs of both films myself.

I have the Paramount DVD of The Strange Love of Martha Ivers and is the one to get if it's available, as it had the best picture quality. I'm still waiting for the BD of No Man of Her Own with Barbara Stanwyck which was supposed to be released by Olive if I remember correctly more than a year ago.

I also have both volumes of Bad Girls of Film Noir which I think I watched once, and can't remember any film being worth much. Night Editor (1946) from vol.2 is one of the better ones in my opinion.

I have both Bad Girl sets.. the first volume has The Glass wall with Gloria Grahame, that's the best Noir in Volume One, IMO. The import DVD costs three times as much as the 4 movie DVD set

Olive has not delivered on a few titles such as No Man of Her Own and Beware My Lovely which was on a postcard of their for upcoming Noirs and never happened. I heard Warner has the film elements for that movie..

I'm also awaiting the Blu-ray release of No Man of Her Own. I picked up Olive's dvd release from a used shop for $5 last week and when (if ?) the Blu-ray does come out, I will make my own combo pack.

I have no regrets whatsoever about my purchases of the Film Chest Blu-rays of The Red House, Kansas City Confidential, and even The Strange Love of Martha Ivers. These flicks have been through some rough patches through their days in public domain, so I'm just glad to have them in any form or fashion, and I think that all three of them are pretty great.

Allene Roberts, who also appears in the Olive Films title, Union Station, in a role as a blind girl, is quite good in The Red House. She could have had quite a career in cinema, but she stayed true to her Christian values during her time in Hollywood and returned to her home state of Alabama after she was married.
