Anyone else recording The Big Sleep on TCM today at 11:30am EST? I only have enough DVR space for two, so I decided to go with The Killers as my second choice instead of Gilda.

I'd be curious to know what the HD transfer looks like!

I don't have TCM, so I picked up Gilda and The Big Sleep from the library. I plan on watching both of them this weekend! I haven't seen either of them before, so it'll surely be quite the education.

I've never seen The Big Sleep so I can't judge it against prior releases. But I've watched many excellent film transfers from the same time period, so I can at least determine if it's better than DVD quality.

Be sure to let us know! I've read somewhere that it's speculated there hasn't been a blu-ray release yet because the surviving elements aren't in the best state.

Will do! Not sure if I'll be watching it tonight or this weekend, but I'll post back about the A/V quality once I've seen it. For some reason, I always thought there was a UK release, but I just realized I was thinking of Touch of Evil.

There is no HD master of The Big Sleep as of this moment. I'm sure WB is working on it but if and when they release a Bogart box or single releases of his Noir's don't expect this to be included.

I just finished watching Gilda and I absolutely loved it! I'm not sure if I'll get to The Big Sleep today, so I may end up watching it tomorrow, but I'm excited for it as well.

Most likely. Studiocanal locks most of their titles, and the previous release was locked. They do have rights to the movie in the US though, so they really shouldn't lock it.

And still no N.American release for Gilda. That in itself is a crime.

Looking at the first page of this thread... wouldn't Dick Tracy be considered film noir? It's got about as much night in it as Who Framed Roger Rabbit.

I don't think we should lower our standards to include that movie. I liked it when I was 12 (actually, I think I was 10 when it came out), but I tried watching it a few years ago and... yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah. lmao

OH wait, The Spirit is on there... nevermind, the list has already been defiled.

BTW, I think it is great that Universal put the theatrical and workprint versions of Touch of Evil on the BD, but is there really any reason to watch them when they have the version that is as close to Wells' original vision on there?

Absolutely. It's worth seeing how much studio interference can radically alter a director's vision.

This is a list of noir and neo noir films, bad or good. If Dick Tracey is classed as being 'neo' noir, it should be included.

'Film noir' is a stated genre for the film on this site.
