I don't know if anyone said this in this thread but I broke my 3 year of not going to the movies to see this tonight and I hated it because
[Show spoiler]Nah, I'm just messing with you all. It was beyond awesome. I think blu ray has found it's Matrix.

Saw this last night finally. I avoided every discussion about it as I didn't want to read anything.

When it ended all I could say was.......Awesome.

I don't think a movie has ever kept me in such suspense for so long (the last 30 minutes or so while
[Show spoiler]the van is falling
). Can't wait to revisit this on blu-ray. Five Stars for sure!

I have never heard that. Where does that idea come from?

Because he

Brilliant.
That's about all that needs to be said about the film in the sense of a reivew. To the point. Accurate. And it will get people out to understand why it is everything you described it as.

[Show spoiler]You got me! I was all revved up and ready to counter anything bad you might have to say about the film. When I clicked on your spoiler, I was actually disappointed that there was nothing to "discuss" with you. And by "discuss" I mean "argue." :P

Maybe because
[Show spoiler]his wife is dead, so he stopped wearing it?

[Show spoiler]yeah but in the dream world he's wearing it, in the real world he's not, and at the end, he's not wearing his ring, which mean either:

A) Wasn't in a dream

or

B) Shows he is past his guilt

This also adds the question of is his Wedding ring really the totem?

I don't believe that
[Show spoiler]his wedding ring is his totem. If it was, he would pay closer attention to his wedding ring finger whenever jumping in and out of dreams to make certain as to where he is. He never does. He always resorts on the top. Plus, I don't think that Cobb ever had a totem until Mal killed herself. I believe THAT moment is when he came to realize just how necessary and important it would be to have one and to not let anyone else ever touch it for fear someone else might mess with his concept of reality as he did hers. And, that is when he decided to take hers up as his own.

You may be asking, "What do you think is the explanation for the wedding ring situation then Petra?" I believe that the wedding ring doesn't appear in reality because Cobb is suppressing his guilt in the real world. Why would he wear the symbol that represented their spiritual union if trying to avoid what it now came to represent to him? In the dreamspace, his wife is still there. She is still tangible and he visits her on a regular basis. In THAT environment (the subconscious realm) he is in denial that she is actually dead. There is a possibility in his mind that they can still live together in limbo, even though she isn't really his wife. So, since she is still alive in his eyes within the subconscious realm, he doesn't have to feel as much guilt when he sees her. Therefore, the ring comes to have a totally different representation to him in the dreamspace.

Of course, all opinion. But, I stand firm on it. I have a real hard time with the notion of the
[Show spoiler]wedding ring being his totem because he never EVER looks to his finger, or even his hands for that matter, to establish whether he is dreaming or not. If he acknowledged either hand or finger even just ONCE in the film, I'd say there was a valid arguement FOR the wedding ring as totem.

But, I'm going to see the film again today, so I'll pay closer attention to his actions upon leaving dreamspaces.

I can usually tell I have a ring on if I can feel it around my finger, I'm sure Cobb can do the same

[Show spoiler]Not if you are wearing it without taking it off for years. It tends to disappear from "feeling." Sometimes I'll forget I have my sunglasses on my head even though they are there. I don't feel them there. Then, hours later I'll have a moment of panic thinking that I left them somewhere and have to have them fall off my head in order to know that they are actually there. So, he'd still have to look to SEE if the ring was there or not to determine if he was awake or dreaming. Besides, he'd still need to acknowledge it with his eyes and hands in order to determine whether it was real or fake. Taking his totem for granted and just assuming that because it was there it meant something would be completely contrary to the very notion of the totem itself.

you would notice if you've had it off for years, and when you go into a dream it's magically there.

You wouldn't "feel" it in a dream necessarily?

Here is the lowest rated review (via Meta-Critic).

This guy should never, ever be officially allowed to review another movie. . . ever.

I literally read this with this expression on my face.

Some Quotes:

Quote:
Writer-director Nolan is an elegant Hollywood hack from London whose movies are a colossal waste of time, money and I.Q. points. "Elegant" because his work always has a crisp use of color, shading and shadows, and "hack" because he always takes an expensive germ of an idea, reduces it to a series of cheap gimmicks and shreds it through a Cuisinart until it looks and sounds like every other incoherent empty B-movie made by people who haven't got a clue about plot, character development or narrative trajectory. Like other Christopher Nolan head scratchers-the brainless Memento, the perilously inert Insomnia, the contrived illusionist thriller The Prestige, the idiotic Batman Begins and the mechanical, maniacally baffling and laughably overrated The Dark Knight-this latest deadly exercise in smart-aleck filmmaking without purpose from Mr. Nolan's scrambled eggs for brains makes no sense whatsoever

Quote:
You never know who anyone is, what their goals are, who they work for or what they're doing. Since there's nothing to act, the cast doesn't even bother. It's the easiest kind of movie to make, because all you have to do is strike poses and change expressions.

Wow.

I can't say one way or the other which was his
[Show spoiler]totem, but I will say a wedding ring is different in that you do feel it when it's not there. I would say more so someone going through what he's going through.

A wedding ring is unique and would make a great totem. It's something you know is there and feels different than any other jewelry. It feels different than something like sunglasses because it actually means something to you. Usually more than anything else you would own or wear. It would make a powerful totem IMO in that he wouldn't need to be constantly checking for it. Maybe someone can watch it and see if he indeed rubs it with his thumb, a tick many people have.

Again, I can't say one way or another as I've only seen the movie once and am just speaking to the 'nakedness' apposed to the 'comfort' one feels when they have their wedding ring on.
