INCEPTION Review Thread (SPOILERS!!)

All we know about the story so far is that the movie is a contemporary science fiction action movie “set within the architecture of the mind.” Leonardo DiCaprio plays the lead, a CEO-type, Marion Cotillard (La Vie en rose, Public Enemies) is his wife, Ellen Page (Juno) is a young college grad student and DiCaprio’s sidekick, Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays an associate working for DiCaprio. Ken Watanabe will play the film’s villain, a man who is blackmailing Leonardo DiCaprio’s character. Tom Hardy (Bronson) is a member of DiCaprio’s team. Cillian Murphy (Batman Begins, Sunshine) and Michael Caine are also signed on, but no details are known about their characters.

Inception will begin production this summer, and is scheduled to hit theaters on July 16th 2010.

oh god am I excited for this...this will be awesome...even though Leonardo is in it...I'm sure Nolan knows what he is doing

and I agree about the prestige...it is awesome, but does take multiple viewings to understand fully, but that's what's so great about Christopher Nolan's movies, you can rewatch them many times and still discover something new, even if it's just tiny details

I didn't know it started shooting already.

We’ve heard recently that the budget for Christopher Nolan’s Inception might be sky-high, as in north of $150m, and now we know that the film has begun shooting in Tokyo. Cue eager photographers trying to get a glimpse of Leonardo DiCaprio, Ken Watanabe and Joseph Gordon-Levitt as they move from trailer to set to shoot the closely-guarded sci-fi tale.

In addition to Tokyo, Inception (working under the title Oliver’s Arrow) will also reportedly shoot in Los Angeles, London, Paris, Tangiers and Calgary. That certainly won’t keep the budget down, but that’s still a lot of money for what sounds like a fairly low-key, conceptual sci-fi story. The picture above was taken on the 15th, and in a brief interview with IGN screenwriter David Goyer confirmed that the film was shooting now. “You know, talk to [Nolan] after he finishes Inception, which he’s shooting right now. That just started shooting” Goyer also kept mum about Batman 3 possibilities — as he says, don’t expect to hear anything much until Inception’s principal photography is done.

At this point we still know next to nothing about the plot of the film. The original logline remains: “a contemporary sci-fi actioner set within the architecture of the mind.” What does that mean? Great question. No one is talking. Joseph Gordon-Levitt was asked about the film recently and wouldn’t offer any details. I hope they manage to keep most of it secret for a lot longer. Too many genre projects are put all out in the open way too early; it would be nice to have confidence in a filmmaker and just let them work away at a project that can be discovered when it is done. I don’t want spoilers; I don’t want secret details; I just want to see the thing. Going to make it dificult to keep reporting on this one as it goes forward…

According to Warner Bros’ exhibitor website, the first teaser trailer for Christopher Nolan’s Inception will play in front of some screenings of Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds, beginning on August 21st. Nolan has a history of releasing very short teaser trailers, that don’t reveal much. Some might remember the teaser trailer for The Dark Knight, which was released in July two years ago, which featured not much more than the Batman logo flying at the camera with voiceover. I expect that the teaser trailer for Inception won’t offer much more than a shot or two, and then a logo.

August 21st is the same day that the trailer for James Cameron’s Avatar will be released online, in conjunction with 20th Century Fox’s nationwide marketing promotion — Avatar Day.

Christopher Nolan's work, as long as his name is attached to it, it is a definite must check out in my book.
