Looks like it will be off to a solid start . Plus with good word of mouth, the following weeks should be very good as well. The Friday and Saturday number are official estimate, the $62 million weekend is just a projection of the Fri/Sat numbers.

Quote:
'Inception' Dreams Up $62.1M Opener; No Magic For 'Sorcerer's Apprentice' $18.1M

1. What an impressive start for the Warner Bros/Legendary Pictures mind-bending scifi thriller from 3,792 theaters, with Friday's $21.6 million (including $3M midnight shows in 1,600 locations) and Saturday's $22.5 million. The weekend opening should be $62.1M, solid for a 2D films, against a $150M budget. Audiences rated it an overall "B+" Cinemascore, with the under-25 crowd giving it an "A". Then again, this is Summer 2010's most anticipated film because of Chris Nolan's incredible track record for critically acclaimed big box office actioners (Batman Begins and The Dark Knight) as well as smaller psychological dramas (Memento and Insomnia) films -- and Inception represents both genres. (By the way, have you seen Inception's comic book preview? This rather innovative marketing gimmick is here.) But I've rarely seen Hollywood all over the map when it came to a movie's expected 3-day weekend grosses like this time.

That's because this was an original film not easily explained in a 30-second spot. Rival studios gave me predictions ranging from a low of $40sM to a high of $60M -- and everything inbetween. Especially because, surprisingly, tracking didn’t jump quite as much from last Monday to now. Comps include Shutter Island with a bump for summer, or Batman Begins plus inflation. But no one is certain what to add for "The Nolan Factor". (This was a movie Chris wanted to make for 10 years.) Yet everyone agrees that the pic will have considerable legs if audiences don't find it too dark or too hyped or -- god forbid! -- too smart. Though one reviewer complained, Nolan's visionary film has "no soul, no sex, and almost no joy".

Overseas, Warner Bros plans a 3-week roll-out for the Leonardo DiCaprio starrer with Ellen Page and Joseph Gordon-Levitt. This weekend, 10 markets open, including the UK. From July 21st to 25th, a total 29 markets open, including France, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Australia, Russia, and the Benelux. Then, from July 28th to August 1st, another 13 markets come on line, including Germany.

Nice, I actually see this film doing better overseas than domestically.

I will agree with that statement. North America tends to be less cerebral with their entertainment. They prefer NOT to think while watching a film... especially in the theatre. European and Asian demographics love artistic thought-provoking films far more than North American demographics.

Now that I've thought about it, while it was obviously well-written and isn't a movie you turn your brain off for, it's not hard to get. Whether everything in the movie happened or not and what is really going on in the movie is up in the air but that's the point. People like me who loved it will probably see it 2+ times but most people will probably only see it once, mostly because it's almost 3 hours long. Oh and Asia has their share of brainfart movies, trust me. I imagine Europe does as well.

Sorry. Inception just didn't do anything for me. Good acting by Leo again, but nowhere near the caliber of his Shutter Island performance. Ariadne was terribly miscast. Still think Batman Begins is Nolan's best work to date.
It felt like "Here's 90 minutes of preparatory instruction on how to fully interpret the final 60 minute act".
Rather watch an egg boil then have to sit through it again. Think I'll go look for a 60-minute video on "How to boil an egg" so I can fully appreciate the experience.

Just saw it and it was simply awe inspiring. I'm not going to get into details, but I believe everybody should see this.

A very solid 5 out of 5 this movie deserves.

You watched the film at its simplest face value then. Inception has far more to offer throughout its entirety than just the plotline. The plotline dictates that the information be presented for the first 90 minutes in order for the story development to make sense for the final 60 minutes, yes. But, the film isn't necessarily about the surface story. It goes far deeper in the study of a human being's subconscious trying to take control of its conscious counterpart.

Let people not like it. Every one doesn't have to get out of it what we got out of it.

LOL... I refuse to let anyone come into the thread and keep others from seeing it via ignorant (not enough knowledge of the topic) statements.

Besides, I may be able to convince a few people to see it a second time with a deeper perspective in mind. It couldn't hurt to try, right? After all, this is the best film made in a long time.

I agree. We can't force people to like it

If we loved it, great! I'm glad. If others didn't, oh well. We all have opinions. I can absolutely love the movie, but if Buddy didn't like it bummer. Can't change his opinion. This bored is about friendly debating and talking about a movie, not getting mad at each other and telling each other we're wrong. Just saying guys, let's have fun. Not fight

This is true. BUt if people don't enjoy it, we don't have to call them ignorant ok Petra Let them live in their world of thought about it and you'll live in yours. We don't want any heated fights or hatred over it

If pj_campbell didn't like Inception, I'm going to put together a team of operatives and we're going to go into his brain and make him like it anyway, through his dreams. Just kidding...kind of.

And that is exactly what I am trying to do. I'm trying to invoke a friendly debate with the guy who would rather watch an egg boil. At no point did I try to start a fight or get mad at them.

Sure, I told him that he missed out on some VERY KEY aspects of the film and mentioned why that was. But, it was all factual. Heck, I even supported his arguement if you read my post again.

Fair enough Petra I'm definitely agreeing with you though. I loved the movie so I know where your coming from. I just don't want people to start getting mad at each other Just trying to defuse something before it happened just in case

Ah... another misinterpretation of the word "ignorance." I encounter this all of the time.

First, I said nothing about him being an ignorant person. I said that his statement was ignorant. Ignorance by definition is simply "the lack of knowledge or understanding." Because "the lack of knowledge or understanding" has often led to racial and prejudicial motivations in the past, people automatically assume that the terms "ignorant" and "ignorance" have a rude/insulting connotation to them. Not the case.

Second, his 'critique' of the film was solely about the plot development. And I agreed with him on that. But, this is the quintessential "go deeper than what the director is slapping you in the face with" film. I'm just trying to open people's minds to that notion.

I think the fact that people are thinking and talking about this movie after seeing it means Nolan did what he set out to do, incept the idea of the movie into our brains and see if it takes. It certainly took with me.
