[Show spoiler]I'm really not sure what his totem was before, I don't think the movie really goes into that.

I thought there were three copouts in the movie:
[Show spoiler]1) the wife had hidden something away which DiCrapio replaced with his "inception" idea that the world wasn't real, but it was never revealed what the wife's secret idea originally was. I felt such a revelation could have added a lot to the story.
2) Watanabe was doomed to be in limbo because he had died in the dream, but DiCrapio pulled him out. Exactly how he did it was not shown; it was hinted that Watanbe put a gun to his own head and pulled the trigger three levels into the dream but we were shortchanged as to why that would save him and if in fact that's what happened.
3) What the hell did Watanabe gain from Fisher after all was said and done; there was no payoff.
sounds to me like you missed a lot of major points in the movie.

[Show spoiler]#1. Mol hid her totem far away, she didn't want to know the difference between the real world and the dream world. leo always went on about how you need to have a totem to tell the difference between the two worlds. walking around with no totem is dangerous because you have no idea if your actions have serious consequences, ie. killing yourself.

#2. leo had to convince watanabe that he was in limbo. he used his totem to illustrate his point. once convinced, he had faith and believed he was in limbo. shooting himself was much like leo and mol getting run over by a train.

#3. LOL are you serious? Fischer's dad's company was his competition. by convincing Fischer to dismantle the power company, watanabe has a HUGE monopoly on the energy market, a greedy goal for any power hungry rich man.

i think ppl pre-judge leo far before they see his movies. i don't understand the hate. he is great in everything he does. i can't name a leo movie i didn't enjoy, haters gonna hate i guess.

I agree. Leo is a fantastic actor. My favorite actor, indeed, his performances have ALWAYS been top-notch and probably every movie he has ever been in I have thoroughly enjoyed. It's such a shame he has not won an oscar yet. It makes me angry...almost as much as the fact that Mariah Carey doesn't have a star on the Hollywood walk of fame yet!

So just a bit shy of having a good enough average to be considered a 5 star movie here.

the only movie i can think leo was perhaps limited was because of the material, "the beach." i love love LOVE "the beach" but it's not one of his better movies, i think it's because he is limited by the material.

I think a lot of people disliked Leo at first because of Titanic and the insane amount of hype/success attached to that movie. I know it was a very long time in my life before I saw my first DiCaprio movie, Blood Diamond.

[Show spoiler]Is it stated in the movie that you can only be brought back from limbo by suicide? That a kick-back wouldn't work?

I've only seen the movie once.

[Show spoiler]Yup pretty sure at that point you're so unconscious you have to kill yourself to shock your brain into waking you up.

I disagree about "Leo". He isn't as awful as people say, but there would have been a lot of better picks for his and Cameron Diaz's roles in Gangs of New York. I love Gangs of New York, but they're terrible in those movies.
Other than that, though, I totally agree. All of the "cop outs" weren't even subtly missed by him. They were put out there several times throughout the movie and I'm pretty sure this guy just doesn't know how to pay attention to anything. Lord of the Rings was as hard to follow as this and those movies are, pretty much, nothing but walking.
This guy just needs to stop watching movies.
Period.
I'll buy his blu-ray player off of him.

Wow, has anyone checked out imdb top 250 lately?

http://www.imdb.com/chart/top?tt1375666

Inception is already in 3rd place for the top 250 movie with a score of 9.1 which ties the 1 and 2 spot.

Yup, already been a bit of discussion/controversy about that in here.

Nice spoiler tag

It's implied.
[Show spoiler]Well, it's implied that you have to die. I'm not sure suicide was a specific, although it's possible because that makes it a conscious act.
I think implication usually works better than flat-out stating it, which usually doesn't insult the audience's intelligence as much.
