The 'in Hollywood' being key. I think Cameron/Nolan are the greatest craftsmen in commercial mainstream American cinema, each with his own formula for cranking out blockbusters (spectacle as spectacle/narrative as spectacle).

awesome, awesome film and much refreshing after an awful summer
[Show spoiler]the uncarved block philosophy of taoism came to mind at the very end. From wikipedia:Pu
Pu (simplified Chinese: 朴; traditional Chinese: 樸; pinyin: pǔ, pú; Wade-Giles: p'u; lit. "uncut wood") is translated "uncarved block", "unhewn log", or "simplicity". It is a metaphor for the state of wu wei (無爲) and the principle of jian (儉).[32] It represents a passive state of receptiveness. Pu is a symbol for a state of pure potential and perception without prejudice. In this state, Taoists believe everything is seen as it is, without preconceptions or illusion.[33]

Pu is usually seen as keeping oneself in the primordial state of tao.[34] It is believed to be the true nature of the mind, unburdened by knowledge or experiences.[35] In the state of pu, there is no right or wrong, beautiful or ugly. There is only pure experience, or awareness, free from learned labels and definitions. It is this state of being that is the goal of following wu wei.

I now feel surrounded by men , but I LOVED THE FILM, and I'm a 26 yr old female. I immediately went to this thread to see what others had to say and I found some posts very interesting and helpful because they brought to light what others may not have noticed. Specifically for me
[Show spoiler] The fact that Watanabe and Cobb probably used the gun at the end to kill themselves, thus releasing themselves from limbo, and in turn meaning that the ending is real, again this is open to interpretation but more and more this point is making more sense to me
I felt the film melded elements of Dark City, Matrix, Bladerunner, and a bit Ocean's 11 just beautifully. It's a stunning film to look at AND has top notch acting too. I'm really tired of Leo being overlooked by the Academy.
Actually I think Inception 'put in my mind' similarites between his last incredible film Shutter Island (which I thought he couldn't top at the beginning of the year but I am now torn between the two, I love em both)
[Show spoiler]It has the same kinda device of him blurring lines of reality, seeing echoes and being haunted by a past filled with regrets, and the wife that has passed but who's death he feels responsible for

I now think Inception and Shutter Island are my two fav films this year. It's those kinda films, the ones that compell me to watch over and over in order to discover more of its wonderful madness within, that I just can't get enough of and am sooo happy that we have a few filmmakers and actors in this world that can pull them off. Thank you Scorsese, Nolan, and LEO!!

To hell with Departed, but I'd really recommend Catch Me If You Can... Gangs of New York... Blood Diamond... probably also The Aviator (been awhile since I've seen it).

Actually, Leo is known for being quite choosy with the scripts he accepts. If you look at his IMDB page, he doesn't crank out a ton of movies but rather does only about one per year.

These are all great films but i do believe The Aviator was his single best role ever.

I'm gonna be that guy. I absolutely love The Dark Knight but was incredibly skeptical when Nolan said this movie was on a grander scale than that. I completely agree with him now though, this movie is so damn epic.

Also, based on the last two years with Batman and Harry Potter, I would expect the bluray release date to be Tuesday, December 7, 2010 for Inception. So about an 18 day window til Christmas.

I thought about this too. But it is a dream, not reality. Those who create and shape the dream, consciously or unconsciously, do not want to be hit by bullets.

I watched Inception yesterday. It has stayed with me as I think about it and try to analyze it. It's too early for me to say if it's great sci-fi, but I'm leaning towards that opinion. I saw Blade Runner when it first came out and I did not, at first, think it was in the 'great' category. Maybe it was because it was the theatrical version with the voice over (if I remember correctly). When I saw 2001 in the theater, I came out knowing it was exceptional. Star Wars was clearly something everyone knew immediately was destined for greatness. I think Dark City is in that category, but it doesn't have the fame of the others. Inception?... too early to tell, but no doubt excellent sci-fi. Five stars for me.

Yeah but they we're mega successes, this still could flop, we'll see.

Already not a flop, and with audience and critical tracking I'd say that'd be unlikely to the point of absurd.

$10.22M yesterday to $73M

Seems it's going strong.

That is just domestically too. What was the budget on this film? I thought I heard it was around $150 Million?

Official number given was $160M

The movie is at $88M as of yesterday. It still has a lot of markets to open in.

Well, okay... let's predict some Christmas-time releases to fill that hole then. SALT? Expendibles? I'll keep my money on Inception being that release. Toy Story will be out in November if it follows the timeframe of Up.
