Why UHD Blu-rays aren’t actually 4K | Upscaled

For high-resolution video and TV, 4K has pretty much become the default, but not for long. At IFA in 2018 we even saw companies talking about 8K, and Japan’s public broadcaster, NHK, has promised to film and broadcast the 2020 olympics in 8K

With all these pixels, you might be surprised to learn that most movies and TV shows are still edited at a measly 2K, even for big budget extravaganzas like Aquaman or Avengers. Often, that shiny Blu-ray you bought or the 4K HDR stream you’re about to watch was actually artificially upscaled from normal dumb HD. So what’s going on?

Ugh, get a bit of exposure and it goes to their heads, these stars are so shameless the way that they profiteer off the back of regular folks. I'll make do with the fire hydrant in the next booth for $25.

I already listened to that YouTube which is fairly good for keeping things in perspective.
I’ll add a couple things:

Talking cameras - although many Hollywood films are indeed shot with the < 4K Arri ARRI Alexa XT and now Mini, Netflix has stricter requirements - https://partnerhelp.netflixstudios.c...-Image-Capture (caveat being, exceptions can be had)

Talking projectors – a maxed out 2K DCP has been shown in special cases (e.g. for a film festival) to actually provide greater detail than the 2K stripped out version carried in a 4K DCP - https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...t#post10199390

Maybe because Dolby Vision is not mature enough yet for Disney?
I just don't know ... to make their films more attractive universally, because not all video equipment support Dolby Vision, but HDR much much more.

Based on the YouTube video it appears 8K TVs will not do much or anything at all for viewing movies for a long time. It appears the processing power needed to produce 8K content will not be available for many years.

Definitely, I’m friends with many Filipinos and they are all nice. Too nice when it comes to offering food! Essentially “stay for dinner, then take these mountain of food home with you!”

That’s the most “no shit Sherlock” article ever. Of course it will be mainstream as the price drops. What the article doesn’t mention are installation cost (that is the second most expensive cost in the current MicroLED TV, then the video processing unit to scale, and the last difficulty is as MicroLED tiles ages (contrary to popular believe, LEDs also degrades with usage, changing a dead tile say after 2 years of constant usage will require that one tile to be calibrated to the “aging” of the rest of the tiles.

Because don’t forget, the main reason have a Wall TV is so you can have the “wall” to be turned in all the time except when there is nobody at home and when you go to bed. The two installations I’ve seen this far are running “wallpapers” (such as sceneries from around the world). All the time when the owners are at home.

As for me, I hope they can make the dot pitch much smaller. Both at CES2018, CeS2019 and those two guy’s places, when I was standing at the screen size to viewing distance ratio I use in my home theatre (about 16ft from the entire wall), I still can see the lack of cohesion between the subpixels that rubs me the wrong way. But then again most people are fine with single chip DLP, I still get motion sickness when watching more than half hour. Even 3LED single chip DLP gives me nausea. It’s a physical thing that my family “suffers” including my brother who doesn’t care about video technology gets nauseated when watching a single chip DLP.

What I get from it is this: OLED is going to stick with us for a good fair while.
MicroLED is years away from being mass produced and affordable.
