I've still got no idea how they'll even do it on a DCP, I suppose the native rate of the 'container' will have to be the maximum that will be used (48 or 60) but what happens to the 24fps stuff within that container? Black frame insertion? Some kind of interpolation, which will only make it look soap-opera-ised anyway? It's a head scratcher.

Ah, you're right, they can just repeat the frames. I'm overthinking it, as usual. That method may well accentuate the inherent judder of 24fps (just as 3:2 pulldown does with 60Hz versions of 24fps material) but seeing as Cameron said he'd keep the HFR precisely for those sorts of panning and/or action scenes then it wouldn't be a problem if managed correctly.
24 fits better into 48 than 60 though, if he does go variable then he may have to stick with 48fps. He said in the same Empire interview that 48 (for HFR as a whole) was far better than 24, but that 60 was only marginally better than 48. I guess we'll just have to wait and see. Or die of old age in the meantime. |

Apple gave their opinion on ICtCp and they think it might have some problems. Their tests were somewhat limited though so hopefully some other companies will test it soon.

Their can be hidden motivations behind these documents but as far as I know Apple is open to the idea of replacing YCbCr. Apple did admit that their testing method for ICtCp was flawed and that they really needed a display that could do 10-bit RGB from input to display panel. Personally I would like to see a company test ICtCp with a 12-bit RGB laser projector.

A more thoughtful question, or a more ballsy bet by cinephiles with a technical background would be to ask/bet on how well? (compared to what was seen at NAB 2016) will current generation Series II projection systems having servers capable of handling up to a maximum of about 400-ish Mbps, show the movie in 120fps 2K 2D at their local theaters? In other words, will thee immersive quality be acceptably close….or….not even in the same ballpark as the full native version, thusly losing much of that *wow* factor felt by the NAB 2016 audience. |

I think this movie will be worth a substantial road trip; I just hope adequate communication about presentation features will be available in time for that trip to be planned. |
