I just hope we're not left in the cold, Steed. The uptake of Blu-ray in the UK has been pretty slow and even though 4K TVs have done very well sales-wise, I think most people who've got them are already having fun with Netflix 4K and Amazon 4K and whatnot. If people think UHD BD has already got a mountain to climb in the US, it's got a ****ing entire planet to climb in the UK.

Jono, it seems to me that given the Google Chrome translation I have, the German site is implying that Panasonic will demo a Ultra HD Blu-ray player (beyond the prototype stage) which will show UHD content from a UHD disc? I also get another sentence gibberishly translated as “Matching players ![]() After the infomercial to reporters is finished, unless somebody is afraid, the event would be a splendid time for an astute reporter to ask the simple practical question as related to a recent poll involving avid home theater enthusiasts ![]() ![]() as to the requirement (or not) of online authentication in order just to play the advanced parameters of a UHD HD Blu-ray disc…..and pull out a simple ‘yes’ or ‘no’ answer from the spokesperson pedaling the player(s). |

There will be new information about UltraHD Blu-ray at IFA. The first UltraHD Blu-ray player will be shown - likely from Panasonic who showed a prototype at CES 2015. Blu-ray players compatible (matching) with UltraHD will be shown. Use of DTS Digital Bridge in UltraHD Blu-ray is not yet known. UHDBD authoring software is available. List of recent 4K movies: Hobbit trilogy, Focus, Chappie, Mall Cop 2, Unbroken, Gone Girl, various special interest titles, remastered Saw and Peanuts. UltraHD players will be available this year. HDR TVs will be shown. UltraHD Blu-ray specs include HEVC/H.265, 3840x2160, 60Hz, 100Mbps. Disc capacity 66GB and 100GB, 10-bit color depth, Rec.2020/BT.2020 colour space. |

The Hobbitses weren't finished at 4K either, although that doesn't seem to have been a barrier to the 2K-finished movies which were announced as 4K Dolby Vision remasters by Warners not too long ago. Maybe they've worked the same mojo on Jackson's trilogy (which were already graded on Mistika's, incidentally).
It just wouldn't be a Sony launch slate without a goofy comedy though; in place of Sandler there's Kevin James. ![]() |

My guess is the reason they're branding the new format "Ultra-HD" and not "4KBD" is to move attention away from pixel count, and to emphasize the other technical improvements. A movie like FOCUS could still be honestly marketed as a "UHD" version of that movie as long as it has wider color space than the BD.

Of course, but they'd be wise to concentrate on genuine 4K material for the launch otherwise all the bloggers and commentators who've been rubbishing 4K for years will have a bloody field day. I can see the headlines now: "When is 4K not 4K?" and so on. We in here - some of us, anyway - know that it's not just about the pixels as to the benefits of UHD BD, but all the average joe will do is look to those bloggers for advice or will simply stumble across the usual shite that the likes of Yahoo continually emit.
