Black frame insertion? Some kind of interpolation, which will only make it look soap-opera-ised anyway? It's a head scratcher.

Maybe insertion, but as a PC gamer a changeable framerate is not a good thing.
It is known to make some people sick

If they do a 3:2 pulldown type thing for the non-native HFR material it should be unnoticeable.

Ah, you're right, they can just repeat the frames. I'm overthinking it, as usual. That method may well accentuate the inherent judder of 24fps (just as 3:2 pulldown does with 60Hz versions of 24fps material) but seeing as Cameron said he'd keep the HFR precisely for those sorts of panning and/or action scenes then it wouldn't be a problem if managed correctly.

24 fits better into 48 than 60 though, if he does go variable then he may have to stick with 48fps. He said in the same Empire interview that 48 (for HFR as a whole) was far better than 24, but that 60 was only marginally better than 48. I guess we'll just have to wait and see. Or die of old age in the meantime.

Apple gave their opinion on ICtCp and they think it might have some problems. Their tests were somewhat limited though so hopefully some other companies will test it soon.

*snicker* The same Apple who thought forever 720p HD was good enough and who's current phone's camera turns snow into something that looks like a urinal ice trough? The one who just introduced a new gen streaming device that maxes out at 1080p where others are going 4K? That Apple?

Tip of the day -
Don’t wait until you experience symptoms….get routine eye exams…..especially because some conditions are completely symptom free and irreversible once the damage has been done.

I am somewhat skeptical of their subjective tests with ICtCp since Apple should have used a better testing method but they have done a lot work on HDR/WCG during the development of HEVC. Apple first discussed the use of a different color representation over 2 years ago so they are open to the idea. RGB, YCbCr, and XYZ are well known but ICtCp is new and hopefully more companies will test it.

Not as bad as compared to the degree to which Jack Holm skewered HLG prior to the San Diego meeting in a document submitted late. I notice so far that one has not been resubmitted for Geneva.

Their can be hidden motivations behind these documents but as far as I know Apple is open to the idea of replacing YCbCr. Apple did admit that their testing method for ICtCp was flawed and that they really needed a display that could do 10-bit RGB from input to display panel. Personally I would like to see a company test ICtCp with a 12-bit RGB laser projector.

I'm betting on a rather small number.
A rather safe bet that is given the fact that it would require a VERY SUBSTANTIAL upgrade in order to outfit a D-Cinema in order to project Billy Lynn with “all bells and whistles intact” but, there is an (optimistic) goal for super niche exhibition of the full native format as I mentioned to fitprod on the last page.

A more thoughtful question, or a more ballsy bet by cinephiles with a technical background would be to ask/bet on how well? (compared to what was seen at NAB 2016) will current generation Series II projection systems having servers capable of handling up to a maximum of about 400-ish Mbps, show the movie in 120fps 2K 2D at their local theaters? In other words, will thee immersive quality be acceptably close….or….not even in the same ballpark as the full native version, thusly losing much of that *wow* factor felt by the NAB 2016 audience.

It's a good question (and, also, what the "average" commercial presentation will look like). Personally, I anticipate the drop from 3D to 2D would have a more substantial impact on immersion (or the removal thereof) than the drop from 4K to 2K.

I think this movie will be worth a substantial road trip; I just hope adequate communication about presentation features will be available in time for that trip to be planned.
