NO...Patcher has made two points over the last year on Game console sales:

1) XB1 sales will eventually increase over PS4 sales due to it's support for TV Media. (I think Sony has the same plan, just delayed, as the hardware to support the game features can also support Media features 1:1. HDMI pass through is only needed till cable moves to all IPTV sometime around 2017 for premium customers.)
2) The number of AAA game players willing to buy Consoles is fixed and we are nearing the # of consoles sold last generation. For sales to continue at the same rate they both have to target a different market like Casual games.

What's coming for TV and Media: ATSC 2.0 in the US, Vidipath world wide, UHD Blu-ray and digital bridge, The FCC DSTAC replacement for the cable card and the world wide move to all IPTV by cable companies starting 2017 and fully implemented 2020+ for premium customers by the time UHD ATSC 3 world wide Antenna TV comes on line. To support these with a 1080P TV you need a STB like a game console...this is why multiple ARM game consoles are now viable and coming. These ARM consoles have performance levels below the Xbox 360...I.E. Casual and streamed games. They have no hard disk and no blu-ray drive.

So the casual game market and Media as you mentioned (Amazon Fire) have cheaper options, The XB1 and PS4 are designed to be Media Hubs (PS4, XB1, PC) which compile and serve all media because it has a blu-ray and Hard Disk drive. This is where they differentiate themselves and if done properly this is how they keep the sales momentum.

Removing UHD Blu-ray and digital bridge which requires a Blu-ray player and Hard disk from the PS4 while the XB1 and PCs support this will impact future PS4 sales...it doesn't make sense as a modern standard blu-ray drive can read three layers, the PS4 does have HEVC support and the HDMI port can support HDMI 2.0a and more as it supports up to 120Hz frame rates for VR and HDCP takes place in Southbridge. To support a 120HZ frame rate with 60Hz source intermediate frames are created by comparing frames. This takes hardware performing something similar to HEVC compression routines.

Planned for the XB1 and PS4 as they both have a separate "custom" USB port for the Camera and Mic is Key phrase voice turn-on and Skype/ooVoo incoming call activation when the consoles are in "rest", AOAC or network standby what ever you want to call it.

Am tired.. so make this quick,

1) I don't care how many millions PS4 has over Xbox One, they will eventually be neck & neck.
2) The number of consoles sold to date last gen was over 170 million leaving Nintendo out of the mix. We are not "nearing" anything.

Subtract the Xbox 360 and PS4 failures and those who bought the consoles for media. I purchased four PS3s as one totally crashed and two developed bad blu-ray drives. One of those with bad blu-ray drive is in my bedroom and one is in my Mothers house and she only uses DVDs. The Sony store allows multiple PS3s using the same digital download game license.

No, he's not making that assumption at all.

Remember, he's responding to this completely ridiculous, demonstrably false statement:

I do agree with you, Mike, that this generation will ultimately sell less than the previous one, and I'm also expecting this gen to be shorter. Still, we haven't even crossed the two year mark yet, and this generation is a long, long, long, long way from approaching the 7-8 years (plus any bleedover) of sales racked up last gen.

It's perfect reasonable to think -- even if this gen sells less than the previous one -- that we're a long way from the end. I can't comprehend how anyone could think otherwise.

I see, the generation will not last as long as the last.
That was an anomaly totally, I can remember the meetings of panic needing new hardware.

You know that Xbox brand is relevant only in the US/Canada/Mexico, right?

World≠ America

yup that is why there are no exotic sports cars and mansions because the mass market does not buy those it is only the extremely wealthy. There are no comics or AD&D or chess because they are only bought by nerds and geeks. There are no high fashion because people won't pay those prices.....

There's no demand at all for another disc format, that's not up for discussion.
so why are there threads like this one and a few others on this site and any other AV site (and some none AV sites that I frequent?)

Look at blu-ray sales compared to DVD and imagine that number shrank 3 times...
let's. on 2015-10-11 Avengers :AoU sold 62% of the copies on BD http://www.homemediamagazine.com/top...k-ended-101115 so almost twice as many copies as DVD, it also sold more on BD then all other formats combined. By your simplistic view that would mean "the mass market that makes the difference" and there is no place for DVD or any streaming or DL option. And if we assume we take 1/3 of the BD sales to guestimate UHDBD sales in the future that would mean ~20% market share which is very reasonable and very far from no one (i.e. to put it in perspective, at the end of Sept Netflix was used in 42,068 US households that is 36% of US housholds)

I disagree on that, it would not surprise me if it is a bit longer.

Let's start with something simple
the original Sony console launched in 1994
PS2 2000
PS3 2006
PS4 2013

that is roughly 6 years give or take some months for each.

so the idea that the last generation was extremely long is off (it appears a bit that way when looks at MS, the xbox launched late and MS thought that it was the reason they were in second place and so they launched the 360 early to give them an edge but eventually they were in second place again you can't say if the XB was short or the 360 long or a bit of both)

As for why I believe the next one will be a bit longer? consoles compete with PCs for gaming and PC gaming is not advancing nearly as fast as it used to because PC performance is not advancing as fast and people don't want to spend as much. Now it is too early to say, but as off Oct 2015 I think this generation will be a bit more then 6 years (I am guessing 7-8). Also don't forget that for consoles with every passing year console manufacturing becomes better for the bottom line on the manufacturer so there is a vested interest at keeping it going.

You have confused next console coming out with lasting
PC gaming is not advancing? Moore's law would disagree

No way does this gen go 8 years before seeing 9th generation hardware.

If anything this gen will be shorter then last, which was indeed longer than any previous generation.

We go by the first console of the generation life cycle that's Xbox 360 launching on November 22 2005 and then xbox one launching November 22 2013 (November 15 for PS4). That's exactly 8 years which is way too long for home console tech and is the longest amount of time between console generations there has ever been since generation 1.

Hopefully in 3 years time we will be seeing PS5 and Xbox Two at E3 with full UHD capabilities and hopefully 2TB+ HDDs.

Any reason a 4K blu-ray thread in the Blu-ray Tech forum has turned into a Gamer war?

Because it's UHD BD playback capabilities were brought in to question.
