John Wick, Hacksaw Ridge, Ex Machina, Sicario, many others, as long as the master is good. Lionsgate had nothing to do with the T2 DNR so that's not their fault, and nothing they could do about it, so using it as the one example as to their quality isn't really fair nor indicative of their releases as a whole.

Uh, yeah.

Sicario, Patriots Day, John Wick 2, and American Assassin, all have exceptional PQ.

Weird that a digital copy isn't included just like "The Foreigner" I just hope the PQ is great then I'll buy.

I haven't seen about half of LG's catalog but I can with confidence that Knowing, Hell of High Water, Criminal, Sicario, Power Rangers, John Wick 1/2, Valerian, Hacksaw Ridge, and Ex Machina are all great UHDs.

I'm really REALLY hoping that both of these have beautiful new 4k scans done and that the original unaltered theatrical soundtracks are included on both. They can add an Atmos or X track along side the original ones and then all should be happy.

It always saddens me when studios either cheap out or become lazy and simply use old masters (that aren't always very good) and slap them on a UHD disc with no thought or effort put in.

I'm not saying all upscales from 2k DI"s look bad, but if that DI isn't good, then it comes across as nothing more than a cash grab, and 4k discs almost universally sell at a premium, especially upon initial release. Give us what we're buying, not a haphazard release.

I would guess that most people who have adopted 4k at this point are hardcore movie fans and/or serious collectors. All we are looking for is for our treasured films to be handled with care.

How many stellar *catalogue* UHDs had Lionsgate released? That is the question.

I'd write it off as a horrible disappointment so when it comes along you can only be either right or pleasantly surprised.

If it's botched, I can easily live with the 35th ann BD.

Has there been any word of Cundey's involvment with the UHD BD? I would be much more fearful if Lionsgate is just taking this on upon themselves.

Yep, yep, and yep again. I'll stick the knife in where it's due on ANY distributor, even Sony, but this prevailing "Lionsgate suck" mentality is baffling to me. Have they made some mistakes? Sure they have, though it's worth reiterating for the gajillionth time that T2 WAS NOT THEIR FAULT WHATSOEVER, and the Case of The Filmout Transfers will always be a bit of a mystery (zoinks, Scoob!), but how many other studios routinely include Dolbys Vision & Atmos, include the extras on the 4K disc and use 100GB discs almost exclusively? (Yes pedants, there are omissions to each of these pointers but bear with me here.)

Most of their best-looking discs are newer product so it stands to reason that they look good - when even Universal and Paramount can't **** those up you know that Lionsgate can handle it too - and that's fair enough, but I've also liked much more of their catalogue product that I've seen than not.

What we don't know is how they'll handle brand new film transfers from scratch, I can't think of many examples even in the pre-UHD era of Lionsgate having to do these for themselves so IMO there's very little precedent for people to worry themselves over (unlike my fear of a Nolan planet because we've already got proof of what his notion of UHD looks like, see how that works?). So I'm happy to wait and see.

Oh, for sure. I was just giving a best case scenario. Considering this is Lionsgate, it may be a bit of a coin flip. That said, they've had some great releases, so I am certainly hopeful.

Regarding this release specifically, yes, the surround mixes for it in the past have been terrible and super duper revisionist. This movie really needs its original audio back.

PS

Lionsgate have released some of the worst BDs around when it comes to competent mastering (I don't mean extras, in case Cliff is reading this, I mean the picture quality) so I can understand why that train of thought might carry on over into UHD but that's why I praise them like I should: their BDs are so shite that it magnifies the competence of their UHD output.

Most of those aren't catalogue titles though and wouldn't need any additional work done, weren't the John Wicks done by Warner? Or do the UK versions differ from US ones?

To be honest the one which I have the most doubts over is American Psycho, it's never been treated properly on home video. This is the opportunity for Lionsgate to right the wrongs and give it the release it deserves, and the one it needs right now to paraphrase a certain film.

I'm perplexed on why they're not including a digital code with this release? Don't get me wrong, the UHD disc is the main selling point for me, but I was also hoping to add it to my digital collection as well for when I travel or when friends/family want to watch it. I'm pretty sure it's available via iTunes, so some sort of digital rights must exist.

Maybe they are finally joining Movies Anywhere and they don't want the news to get out via box art.

According to iTunes and Amazon, Trancas International Films released it digitally. So Lionsgate may not have the digital rights for this one or Halloween 4 and 5.

Does Lionsgate also own the rights to 4 and 5? I would like to see them released in 4K UHD format as well.
