You had to turn up your TV full blast to get any sort of decent sound
with lo-fi tv speakers, you're best sticking to mono/stereo
mutichannel tracks require multiple speakers
i've had 5.1 since 1994

I just ended up watching the whole film with the mono track and I'll be honest that both the mono and 7.1 remix have their pros and cons. I prefer the opening and closing credits scores on the remix as well as the thunder sounds. I could also pick up on Michael's breathing sounds better on the 7.1. The dialogue and overall sound effects are "better" on the mono track though IMHO. I also prefer the fixed audio score sudden high pitched flub when Michael stops the car when Annie yells out at him on the 7.1. That always bothered me before the 7.1 track. I'm fine with the 7.1 but I really do wish the mono had been included.

It's forgivable for movie-logic to argue otherwise for the sake of dramatic effect, just like every movie where loud fiery explosions occur in outer space.

Lightning makes a very loud sound; it’s called thunder.

Just wanted to say that above comment and keeping an open mind is very much appretiated - no matter which version you prefer overall (or consider to be "much better" ). Very helpful in regard to more of the actual differences between the two tracks as well.

Sounds fine to me. And more importantly, it looks great. Can't imagine it looking any better. This is only version of the film I'll ever need.

They are definitely wrong to say lightning makes no sound... but gotta say also think how you define it is not even the exact explanation, either. Lightning and thunder are two separate sounds. The lightning bolt causes the sound of thunder to manifest, indeed, but it still not thunder itself.

There's only one sound. When electricity is released in the sky, each event produces a visual, called lightning, and a sound, called thunder.

If lightning and thunder are two separate sounds, then what does lightning sound like?
