After the previous transfer's "neon green lawns" and "electric blue nights", I welcomed the more subdued color palette. For all I know, this was Dean Cundey's reasoning too.

But even I thought it went overboard in some scenes (like Loomis finding the matchbook). Looks like this one is the winner.

I understand feeling that way about the colors. If the color timing was closer to the new disc and it at least had an audio track without altered sound effects, I would have loved that disc. The grain and encode were fantastic in my opinion.

If anyone needs the Criterion mono track presynced with the new SF 4K disc, shoot me a PM. I just finished it and have tested it on my Sony X700. Plays perfectly. For those wanting to attempt syncing it themselves, btw, note that the new 4K disc is 24fps, not 23.976fps (so one could argue that SF "fixed" the previously-incorrect the frame rate, too, lol).

Has there been any word on which brick and mortar stores will have these, if any? I lucked out in tracking down the one copy my local Best Buy had of the first one last week, and was hoping I would come across the other four in a Target or Walmart out in the wild.

Or you could just mux that track in yourself and enjoy the release right now. But enjoy the wait.

Fedex just delivered my copies of '78 and III from Walmart. III was surprisingly not an eco-case and of course both the 4k and new Blu-ray in '78 were loose but there doesn't appear to be any damage. Although, neither disc wants to stay on their hub. I'm assuming this is common with this release considering how many reports there have been of loose discs. Now the nervous wait begins for II, 4 and 5.

I still got nothing. I was planning on watching them all before Halloween Kills, but I may just watch them closer to Halloween and rewatch Kills on Peacock.

Diabolik has shipped Halloween 1, 2 and 3 to me (probably the others, too, but I didn't buy them yet).

I didn't have a problem with it outside no OG Mono and some flickering that happened early on in the presentation. But after viewing shouts new disc and going back to rewatch my Lionsgate before I part with it, I definitely wouldn't go back to it.

I honestly don't know why. The new transfer is better. It corrects the geometry, is at exactly 24fps, contains the original mono track, isn't desaturated within an inch of its life, and doesn't shift aspect ratio midway through. And while the compression apparently isn't as good, what good is the best compression in the world if the underlying transfer is obscuring all the extra detail it would've provided in the first place. I'm happily sticking with this new disc and not looking back. But you do you.

A digital copy of the original camera negative (if done correctly) adds no additional noise or grain for that matter. The digital copy in the end is like watching the negative; which has the least amount of noise, distortion and grain.

The IP print which (I think) the LG disc was made from will of course have more apparent grain.
Successive printing generations do of coursh build up duped grain, no argument there, but the notion that the camera negative is as clean as a whistle in comparison is somewhat misleading. You're not saying that, but someone could certainly infer it. The camera negative will have finer, sharper grain that's not as coarse and noisy as a dupe element but is in fact just as tricky to compress in its own right precisely because of how fine and sharp it is, along with whatever high frequency detail is now revealed. To that end, if the caps thus far are truly indicative of how the grain has been turned into fields of spotty digital mush then I can see why someone would get the idea that the Shout 4K has been 'scrubbed' in comparison.
