Yes, the encode is very poor on their UHD. It's much better on the remastered blu-ray.

Although there is this concern with the new Blu-ray:

I wouldn't use majority rule as an argument on this forum, to be honest. If the 'Heat' UHD thread reminded me of anything, it's that a good amount of users on this forum really don't know what they are talking about when it comes to the technical workings of this format, as well as not understanding 'artistic intent', and other things.

Regardless, the Shout Factory UHD does provide a great scan with excellent color and an HDR pass that is serviceable, if nothing else.

But the Lionsgate UHD is derived from a prior 4K scan, in which Cundy ALSO oversaw/approved at the time of that scan.

And it's not like the differences here in color and HDR are night and day. They are noticeable, sure. But not enough for me to justify prioritizing watching the SF version over the LG version -- because in the case of the former, the compression on that disc is so god awful, it's honestly one of the worst looking 450+ UHD discs that I own in terms of encoding goes.

The mono track was the deciding factor for me.

I thought Heat looks great, those saying it’s too dark reminds me of the Goodfellas argument another disc which I thought looks great.

[Show spoiler]I can respect a Mono chooser. But ain't it @ 192KBPS? I only own the Lionsgate. FWIW.

Here is the other side to that coin...

This site has probably the most informed user base on physical media, period, and even here - only a select group of people have a problem with the "compression" on this release. And again, even here, it wasn't until a week or two after release that one or two influential folks declared the compression is terrible, and suddenly that becomes the narrative (even from people who had already commented they had seen it, yet didn't complain about it until after that point).

I haven't looked in a bit, but last time I did - I literally could not find anywhere else on the internet where anyone was complaining about that. I actually really tried at one day a few months back, LOL.

So the question becomes - if practically everyone "out there" seems satisfied, and even most people here are, where it seems to only be a dozen or two people who have a real problem with it...they seem to be satisfying everyone but the "1%", so to speak.

I don't say any of this for the sake of argument, and I don't doubt that the people who genuinely feel there are problems really feel that way - though I do have a bit of eye rolling for those folks who tend to "fall in line" and don't complain until they wait to hear some local influencers opinion before they state theirs.

But I think it does bother some of us that people come into this thread, only see the small portion of people who have a problem with the compression, then walk away and say in other threads, etc. "Yeah, that Halloween compression is horrible...I heard" when they have never even seen it themselves, and the vast majority of people actually think this disc looks pretty spectacular, and with all the extras is pretty much the ultimate release of this film.

I guess that's the internet for you, LOL. It certainly isn't unique to here.

EDITED TO ADD: TheSweetieMan, while I replied to your post - I just want to clarify I wasn't referring to you above - I read your thoughtful post and realize it is your own opinion, after watching it yourself. I did not intend to lump you into the "followers" category. Apologies if it reads as such.

Shout sucks, let's just get that out of the way (they've botched too many films). H1 shows this and sadly we are stuck with the rest of the films being exclusive to their crappy encoding (scratches too)! Sure, it's better than mill Creek but they weren't charging 30 plus a pop! Also, the new cover art sucks, should have used the OG artwork for the hard slips

Thanks for supporting, so we can keep getting all these great releases from Shout.

Some people are just easy to please and/or really determined to not have buyer’s regret. It’s cute that Scream Factory has their die-hards, who actually like their often poor compression and hideous artwork.

I wonder if the forthcoming ESC Editions steelbook of this film uses the Lionsgate master, and if so what compression will be like? It won’t have the original mono, I’m sure, so I still won’t be buying this film on UHD. Someday, though… hope springs eternal.

Where do you ever find "anywhere else on the internet" who complains about what we complain about? As such I think you overestimate our importance on here. But I just have to look at the unbridled idiocy greeting the new transfers of the Star Trek films - people preferring those ghastly DNR'ed old transfers on social media - to realise I don't want to have anything to do with such people. The masses can go **** themselves, if they're not being swayed by "influencers" on here then they'll only be listening to some favourite YouTuber who I'm sure is a SUPER nice person but is utterly incompetent in technical matters. Be happy, consume, don't complain etc etc
