Just finished Octopussy. It honestly wasn't that bad. The script was unbelievably convoluted. The majority of the first half was made pointless. Watching 009 crash into the consolidate in a clown suit and drop that egg had me so hooked. The whole Russian bit was dumb and should have been left out.

An unnecessarily convoluted plot seems to be common in these Bond films. I don't mind a complicated plot with mystery if it all fits and makes sense at the end. A lot of them don't. In fact, in most of the films Bond would have hit a dead end if people weren't trying to kill him randomly.

But then I also get a great kick out of stuff like Moonraker and You Only Live Twice. There's so much character, charm, and fun to be found in those movies that I find little to complain about. I just love this series to death.
I really like everything you said here.

My thoughts exactly.

Not bad. Not bad at all. I think a lot of these plots unnecessarily complicated.
For some reason, For Your Eyes Only was on cable all the time when I was a kid. I've seen it far more than any other Bond movie. I couldn't even tell you much about the plot, but I remember certain scenes pretty well, a lot having to do with cliffs. I thought it was pretty cool then, and I'm pretty sure I'm going to enjoy it when I get to it, if only for nostalgic reasons. Since I'll likely sell the Roger Moore collection Blu-rays, I might buy the steelbook of FYEO.

I'm still stuck back on Goldfinger, though. Real life is kicking my butt.

Edit: I finished Goldfinger tonight. Bond vs. Oddjob was pretty cool. All the military guys passing out was hilarious. Overall, a very entertaining film. I got 30 minutes into Thunderball. I didn't mind the slow start, but that theme song... wow that was awful.

You do realize that the military guys were just pretending to pass out, right? Ms. Galore switched the gas canisters.

That's a pretty awful mashup, instead of a "true" composite it looks like whoever did it just took Craig's nose, Brosnan's eyes, Moore's chin and Connery's hairpiece and called it a day. The parts don't even blend well.

Yeah. So? The same is true of the Craig films...and pretty much any film.

As I watched through the Moore films, it just felt like the story was written specifically to encompass all the different locations. A lot of it felt unnecessary. I'm sure new films do it too, but it just really stood out to me in the Moore series. That's all.

The stories for these movies have always been written around the action sequences and locations.

Default James Bond Volume Collections & Ultimate Collection

Just finished A View To A Kill. Not bad. Just dull. Not a lot happened. Bond seemed tired. It was refreshing in a way. He seemed much more calculating.

It's interesting looking back, it seems like some films had a high budget, others had a small budget. Some were super cheesy, some tried to be serious. No real pattern. Even with the same director and writers one film to the next would have a really different tone.

Except the humor, I think I liked TMWTGG best from the Moore series.

Part of me wants to sell Connery Vol 2 and Moore Vol 1&2. I don't really think I'll watch them again, not before 4K anyhow.

I still have Never Say Never Again to watch and I'm going to retry a different version of Thunderball to see if I like it better.

Next up is Dalton though. Looking forward to it.

I would like the TV version of Casino Royale to get an official release. Someone put it out a few years back, but I think it was a bootleg release. I think part of the end credits are missing from the Kinescope. Maybe a company could recreate them.

These films were always changing and adapting, usually as a reaction to what was good and bad from the previous film. In the first two Moore films, they tried too hard to make him into Connery. When that didn't work, they decided to make the movies more grander, escapist entertainment, but then Moonraker went too far, so they decided to reign it in going forward. This is why FYEO is so different than Moonraker. No bad guys bent on world domination in the 80s films, even though some of them were still silly at times.

Dalton's films are fantastic.

It was on the first DVD release of the '67 movie, but it was left off the 2-disc and the Blu-ray for some reason.

Owen was one of the ones being considered to replace Brosnan. Colin Farrell was also considered at that time. Wikipedia has the list of all the actors having been considered, those that turned it down, and those considered but that got other parts, like Sean Bean. It's funny to note that Clint Eastwood, Burt Reynolds and Adam West were all considered but turned it down because all of them felt James Bond should be British.

I am not in favor of Idris Elba getting the role. As written, Bond is a white Englishman. It's not a racist issue. Elba would make a great PI, detective or secret agent, just not James Bond. What's next then? A white Shaft? A Native American Charlie Chan? An African Miss Marple? A Mexican Inspector Piorot? One can be in favor of retaining the fictional character as written in literature without being called a racist.

As I've mentioned, Elba would make for a great OO4 or another Double O Agent working in MI6 in any future OO7 film. Just not a OO6 Sean Bean where he's the villain but another field agent who occasionally assists Bond but has his own assignments.
