I just rewatched ‘Quantum of Solace’ tonight… my favourite Craig entry, and one of my very favourite Bonds of any era. Compelling story, strong character motivations and emotional core. Hate-able and despicable bad guy. Amazing, jaw-dropping, action sequences. Propulsive, kinetic editing, that doesn’t sacrifice coherence. Singularly unique and beautiful locations. Damn. I love it.

IMHO the Sam Mendes entries were a real let-down after this one. There was so much potential with Craig, and the set-up of his first two entries in the series, but ‘Skyfall’ and ‘Spectre’ fell short for me.

I know people love Skyfall and think Silva is the bees knees and all that, but what Mendes effectively did with that movie was sink the attempt at integrating Bond in a realistic environment and returned him to the realm of comic book stuff. Le Chiffre was a fairly realistic villian, as was Greene... Silva is just the Joker. Blofeld was Lex Luthor. Safin is more or less Ra's Al Ghul. I like that stuff, really I do... but it jettisoned everything CR/QOS worked towards.

*Edit: I listed Silva twice by accident; I meant Safin

What made classic Bond so memorable was its larger-than-life villains.

Goldfinger, Blofeld, Largo, Dr No, Oddjob, "Red" Grant - they're as good as they come.

I think they got cold feet after QOS and jettisoned away from all that, hence why Skyfall feels so standalone. Afterward, there's no reason they didn't have to continue with Quantum as the organization that Bond was dealing with, and all their tying in to previous movies MIGHT have worked a little better if they kept that up. They genuinely just did a switcharoo because they got the rights to use Spectre & Blofeld again.

"Quantum" was merely a front group, a subsidiary of Spectre... Most of its members (politicians, industrialists, financiers) didn't even know that Spectre existed.

Mr. White and Dominic Greene were the Spectre agents running Quantum (for Blofeld).

Silva was a hired gun for Spectre -- a weapon trained on MI6. (Blofeld taking advantage of Silva's vendetta against M.)

I need to rewatch the four previous Craig flicks (I intended to do that before NTTD, but life got in the way), but I always thought Quantum was the "least good".

Note I didn't say "bad" because I've never disliked it, my comment is just in comparison to the others. The Craig flicks have all more or less connected to tell one story, and Quantum always felt like the "in-between" movie to me. Like a necessary bridge between CR and SF, but one that doesn't quite work on it's own.

But like I said, I need to rewatch and reassess that opinion. It's literally been years since I've watched it.

Yeah...they don't do awesome box sets like that anymore. My favorite is The Blade Runner briefcase which was issued on Blu-ray, DVD and HD DVD.

Hopefully we'll get a 4K 60th set but the price will be....

I was watching Thunderball on TV last night and it got me thinking why they changed the music at the end when Bond and Domino are lifted from the lifeboat.

The reasoning behind Quantum, and I has asked why they didn't use Spectre, was that it had to do with the fact that Eon Productions didn't have the rights to use "Spectre" in any film production. I'll post an exerpt from the source of where I found the information:

Quote:
When author Ian Fleming looked towards turning his literary franchise into a box office hit, Thunderball was originally considered to be the first film to do so. The eighth novel in his series, his 1961 book was a creation that drew on a rather controversial source: an original screenplay that was written between himself and screenwriters Kevin McClory and Jack Whittingham in the late 1950s. While Fleming eventually decided to distance himself from the writing process, McClory and Whittingham would finish the screenplay, which eventually got its title from Ian Fleming himself.

After reading the finished novel before publication, McClory felt that Ian Fleming had plagiarized the screenplay of Thunderball for his novel. Even with some differences separating the two projects, one such difference being the alleged creation of SPECTRE to stand as the villains, Kevin McClory tried to stop the book from being published. While that tactic failed, McClory eventually pursued further legal action that granted him the literary and film rights to Thunderball, leaving Ian Fleming with the rights to the novel he wrote from its screenplay.
Source: https://www.cinemablend.com/news/247...nd-for-decades

Eventually, MGM and Eon Productions acquired the rights to Thunderball back from McClory's estate, along with the rights to the non-Eon produced 'Never Say Never Again'. But, they didn't get those rights back until after Quantum of Solace was wrapped up and hit theaters.

Yes, that's what we're told in the movie Spectre, but none of that was planned when those films were made.

That explanation was retroactively applied when they made Spectre, because they finally and unexpectedly had the rights to the term 'Spectre" again.

It's pretty clear that Quantum was intended as a stand-in organization for Spectre in the first two films, with no other organization behind it.

Also, Silva wasn't working for anyone within the context of Skyfall. That's the "retconning" that works worst for me, because his entire mission is motivated by personal anger and has nothing to do with any outside force or motivation.

Since it was sold by Amazon UK, probably will. Will find out soon enough. Update: Dispatched, so it was honored.

There are 2 versions in circulation. One has an instrumental version of the Thunderball theme and the other has the standard James Bond theme.

My interest in the Bond franchise has dwindled. I don't even feel like watching this recent one. For years I was waiting to buy the Bond set when I caught it for a good price. Someone on here posted a pic of the blu set for 50 bucks at Wally about 2 years back. I was hoping to find it, but no luck.

Now, I don't even think I'd buy it for $50. I own the Connery collection on DVD, and I'm content with that. I have the Craig films (up until Skyfall) on blu. I think Spectre left a bad taste in my mouth. That movie was straight ass juice.

Silva tells Bond that, were he like him, he could plan his "own secret missions" for the highest bidder. Thus Blofeld hired Silva to mess up MI6 -- which Silva, for personal reasons, wanted to do anyway.

Yes, they retconned it, but it works for me.

Managed to snag one (white version) on eBay for $74.99. Will be a Christmas gift for my dad. I plan on watching all the films with him next year in honor of the 60th anniversary.

Do any of these films have extended/director's cuts other than Casino Royale (2006)? Also, do any of these films come with deleted/extended scenes in the extras?

Just curious as I want to watch all of the Bond content that I can with my dad.
