I wasn't suggesting snobbery.

That's a straw man. I'm simply pointing out that in so many threads the same question is asked in a bubble. I expect that this film and others will get a 4K release, but by now people should understand the market and the priorities of the companies.

…which makes sets like the Dr. No one ever more cynical. Not that movie studios are charities, good lord no (though MGM themselves have been a basket case for years), and even the Craig UHDs have already had several packaging iterations, but for several folks who’ve got into 4K then this isn’t quite enough to get them excited.

If others have no interest in 4K and like the look of this set then more power to them, go for it, but for the people pushing back this isn’t the usual ideological retort against 1080p Blu-ray. I’m certainly not one of those people who expects a 4K for everything, I’ve got better things to be doing than shitposting in every BD thread. But for this franchise - one of if not the biggest in the world - and at this point in the physical media cycle then Blu-ray is not enough.

Indeed… can MGM even credibly claim to be a studio anymore? Or is brand a more apt descriptor?

I watched TSWLM last night for the first time - very nice disc.

Fingers crossed all of these get released on UHD BD at some point.

The 4K's will be released in conjunction with the next Bond movie titled Blu-ray Is Not Enough

Let’s hope James Bond won’t return in The Spy Who Upscaled Me and that whoever does the HDR grade has a License to Nit so that we can see some Living Highlights. I’m also hoping for primo Steelbooks Are Forever packaging.

Haven't the sales figures on the 4K Daniel Craig Bond films been garbage to date while the Blu-Ray ones sold really well? Tough to see them putting a 25 film box set out when they have struggled to sell the 4 and 5 film packs.

Huh. That must've been why they got re-released as standalones and steelbooks then a five movie collection, plus a Titans of Cu*t set for Casino Royale overseas. Non-sarcastic point being that studios don't reissue stuff over and over if it doesn't sell, though 4K's sales numbers are always a small fraction of what BD (and indeed DVD!) shifts so that in itself doesn't mean much, especially for movies that have been on Blu for 15 years already like Casino Royale.

Here's a funny thing though: when the first wave of catalogue Bond Blu-rays was released back in 2008 they didn't sell particularly well, to the extent that some retailers actually sold their 'exclusive' steelbooks to Amazon because they just weren't shifting. (Mainly because people had just bought the whole schmear on UE DVDS a few years before.) It stung MGM so badly that they held off on releasing the remainder of the movies on Blu until 2012 for the 50th anniversary.

I already own the Ultimate Collection on Blu-ray. Even ordered a new blu-ray case to house No Time To Die in the same set.

I think the Dr. No set it's a nice looking set even if it is Blu-ray. I have heard the transfer is kind of lousy. I am largely getting this for the steelbook to go along with my other 007 steels.

A new wave is coming including Man with the Golden Gun.

Beyond that listings for Moonraker, The Spy Who Loved Me, Octopussy, The Man with the Golden Gun, License to Kill, The living Daylights, Tomorrow Never Dies, The World is Not Enough are slated for Oct. 5th. The listings were on Amazon france. (not sure if they are live). I expect Zavvi will have them?

These were the previous ones and Dr. No will fit in nicely.

Also have Goldfinger and Goldeneye.

I would like to think they do a 4k box set at some point now that Craig's run is over. But it probably won't be a 25 film steelbook set I imagine.

The only thing that gives me pause is that Amazon owns MGM now. EON claimed they still have the final say on distribution and where films go in theater. At least for now. But overtime I feel like Amazon will end up exerting more control/influence. Just seeing what they are doing with Tolkein and the Rings of Power makes me cynical. If Amazon does that? They probably have little interest in physical media and would want to push people towards Prime.

This looks like a last effort to get rid of all remaining blu ray discs that were printed that they're left sitting on. I have to assume 4K has got to be around the corner. Maybe holidays 2022.

When the 4Ks eventually arrive, will there also be new Blu-rays (a la Star Trek) or will they just package the UHDs with the current BDs? I wonder. As someone who is happy with regular ol' Blu I would like the new masters with the fixes like non-squashed title sequences etc.

Watching the Bond film back to back the cinema over the past few months, the quality has noticeably improved from TSWLM onwards. I don't know if it's because they are "newer" films and the elements were in better shape, but they are clearly an improvement on the Lowry transfers... as they should be.

The only issue I've noticed so far is when I saw The Living Daylights the other night. The gunshots in the opening title sequence are missing, as I guess the restoration process confused them with dirt... Why the hell does this have to happen?!

Lets say there's perhaps a large-ish number of old Bond Blu-rays laying around various retailers' inventories, and that some of those retailers may be trying to get rid of those, wouldn't a large overstock of unsold discs be a concern to the distributor who is planning a new wave? Bond sells, no doubt about it, but I'm thinking maybe there hasn't been another collection in a while because there's still a lot of unsold product out in the wild. Or does this have no bearing on what gets re-released?
