Don't remind me of that LALD line. That was Bond's response to Solitaire asking "Where's Kananga?" so it's not even a clever response to her question! Which is odd because Tom Mankiewicz was responsible for some great quips in Diamonds Are Forever "Provided the collars and cuffs match..." "Alimentary Dr. Leiter"... "I'm afraid you've caught me with more than my hands up".

OHMSS is one of my favorite Bond films....I love the story, the score, and the photography ...It's such a beautiful film!!

That being said, I do agree it's a bit too long....

Connery could deliver a quip better than anyone ("Do you mind if my friend sits this one out? She's just dead!" remains my favorite from Thunderball). Couldn't agree more on the Moore line falling flat, which is exacerbated by our just having witnessed the most ludicrous offing of a villain in the history of the series ( a dubious honor, which I feel is unrivaled to this day).

Much as I admire Timothy Dalton's portrayal, he spit out his quips like something truly distasteful that he was well rid of.

Connery's got a gift with quippery, he's got great comic timing (which why I LOVE his turn as Henry Jones Sr. in Last Crusade) but my favourite one-liner has to go to Moore: "Speak now or forever hold your piece" from Golden Gun

I'd rather not, we had enough of that shit when the Ultimate DVDs came out over 10 years ago.

I loved OHMSS when I was a kid (well, teenager) but since then my opinion of it has lowered considerably.
I've never been a fan of Peter Hunt's gimmicky editing style (a burden on the Connery era) and that carries through to his direction.
The script is pretty weak, too.
Bond falls in love with Tracy in an instant despite precious little chemistry or emotional connection (this aspect was better handled in Casino Royale), and Blofeld's scheme is vague (and when explained naff).
The non-action scenes at the clinic (with the George Baker-dubbed Lazenby prancing about in a kilt, seducing the least attractive patient) are also pretty dire.
There's a Euro-pudding vibe to the whole film that makes it seem almost like one of those knock-offs.

The John Barry score is terrific, though.

I love Hunt's editing, the fight at the end of FRWL wouldn't be anything like as hard-hitting without it.

I've no idea what "Euro-pudding" means but that's an instant classic of a phrase.

Yeah, that one works better than most, but on the other hand you end up with this...

Nah, I still love it. And to think people complain about modern fight choreography being incomprehensible.

I don't get it, that fight's editing makes sense to me. Fast, yes. Incomprehensible, no.

Terence Young developed the editing style with Peter Hunt in Dr. No, Hunt mentions it many times in interviews and commentary. We can't lay all the blame on ol' Peter.

In any event my only point is there seems to be a rabid fanbase for OHMSS that like to push it as a hidden masterpiece (well, not so hidden now). I like the movie, quite a bit really, but I just don't agree it's at the top of the Bond crop or is so well made. Anyway opinions are varied obviously, and we all have ours. I just think it's interesting how passionate OHMSS fans are.
I think it can still be referred to as a hidden masterpiece because it took the best part of 20 years for it to get anything approaching equal appreciation with the other films and by and large a huge portion of the mainstream still write the film off today because of Lazenby.

By the 90's opinion among the people who matter (those that buy the films on home video) had changed sufficiently for OHMSS to be the one and only film that got a special VHS boxset edition.

I wonder if anyone who could be called a casual fan of the Bond films would be the people who would buy the whole series on any format.
I think the fanbase for OHMSS is largely confined to people who are not just casual fans

You'll regret it if it goes out of print.
The book ( and its companion on The Living Daylights) is incredible.
As an unofficial book I expected it to be light on visual material. I couldn't have been more wrong.
I'm assuming you've not been able to get a detailed look inside it.
If you had I can't understand how you would not be able to own a copy.
for fans of the movie it really is beyond essential

I wonder if that still exists as it was only for a small section of the film.
The documentary on the Thunderball disc includes some scenes with the original audio for Claudine Auger and Adolfo Celi and you can see why they got dubbed.
But the Connery films in particular often had dubbed parts all the way through and I always found it disconcerting.
Can't recall her name offhand but the girl who dubbed Ursula Andress dubbed for several of the Bond girls. Would be nice to see some clips of them with their original voices too

Niki Van Der Zyl was the one who dubbed a lot of the female voices including Ursula Andress in Dr. No, Claudine Auger in Thunderball, and Virginia North in OHMSS.

Thanks, I should have recalled her name as I recently read the one and only interview I've ever seen of her in this.

It's an excellent publication but I'm not sure I've ever bought anything quite so over priced. I feel ripped off specially as the publisher then made it available as 5 magazines for a fraction of the price

I had to laugh that the guy charges such a ridiculous price but then felt the need to add postage and packaging charges on top.

But that is a bargain compared to the pressbook reprints he flogs.
Ok- an original pressbook might cost $2000 but are reprints worth hundreds of pounds.
Thankfully I didn't feel the need to buy those. I just hope he doesn't do a portfolio of OHMSS because I know I'll be suckered in again.

The Goldfinger portfolio is a beauty no doubt about it but reading enjoyment is somewhat diminished by knowing what I paid for it

James Bond's outfit in Goldfinger is, at long last, setting a new trend...
