What a greedy corporation! Is someone thinking there or they're hire only dumb people?! - then again they are making the same mistake (when blu-ray has started in 2006)! After all they gave us recently a complete series of "Ghostbusters" in the end. They have materials in 4K (or maybe higher but I doubt that). Why then again they are putting the part II on the shelf?! So why fans are again treated to be facing 10 consecutive years of waiting? (when they could give us now what we want and make a better deal and also promote the new medium and format. The sales would be bigger and better). It is filling with indignation and funny all at the same time (and at the same time sad because once again studio is showing the centre finger or the rear end to the fans and enthusiasts). It is very similar if Paramount (or Disney) released now "Raiders of the Lost Ark" and then wait a decade in order to give sequels a release (from what we know second, third and fourth part in 2012 weren't done in 4 K - but perhaps I am wrong - feel free to correct me). That is the old, very known and experienced practice from studios and big companies to destroy new medium. Shame You people from Sony.

Deadpool also had a meagre (in terms of most movies) budget of ~$50 million, which goes to show that finishing in 4K (effects may be upscaled) doesn't have to break the bank.

Even if it was shot ARRIRAW Open Gate (3.4K), a huge portion of the image is then thrown away to extract the intended 2.39:1 ratio. Open Gate ARRI is 1.55:1...

In the end your final source is still about 2.8K RAW, so it's an upscale by definition....

No you would lose too much vertical information that way, but even it was the case, resolution is an AREA, so the total number of pixels would still be the same or equivalent. Open Gate doesn't use anamorphic lenses, it's flat.... So 35% of the image/resolution is thrown away regardless.

It's simple: whether they cut the image from the vertical axis only or both at the end the final result is still the same: 35% less resolution than the original RAW file....

I can see what he means with anamorphic though, as the 1.55 aspect of the Open Gate mode wouldn't jive with the 2x glass that's standard for 35mm and 1.33 digital sensors. So if you were to shoot anamorphic on an Alexa with such lenses I guess you'd be restricted to a 2880x2160 ARRIRAW output anyway.

As for Deadpool, what I find weird is why didn't the movie get a regular 4K DCP if it was finished at 4K? I await the ASC article with interest...
