Generally I have them by genre, although I keep certain distributors together, like Criterion, Eureka and Kino. Within those groups I normally keep them in ascending order purchased, so that the ones I haven't watched yet are more together. Although I need to put those watched in alpha order someday.
I also keep formats separate: Blu-ray, HD DVD and DVD. My shelf space is maxed out so my DVD collection is getting relegated to closet storage, or, taking out of their cases and storing the discs in white envelopes (in alpha order in a custom file cabinet) with the covers folded and stored separately. You'd be amazed at how much space is saved by getting rid of standard amary cases. I keep track of my "hidden" DVDs through DVD Profiler Last edited by bruceames; 12-27-2012 at 05:05 PM. |

i have mine ordered by the years they were released in theaters.
when there is more than one film i include them all in the year of the first film, so alien and aliens are both in 1979, and toy story, toy story 2, and toy story 3 are all in 1995. |

I actually keep all my Blu-rays and DVDs in these clear plastic containers from Target:
![]() They sit in these containers with the spines on top for easy access. ![]() (Yes, I know that The World Is Not Enough is out of sequence. I had watched it and accidentally misplaced it before this particular photo was taken.) I started this years ago, because I moved to a new place twice in one year, found that it was easy to transport my movies in these containers, and simply fell into the habit of keeping the movies in the containers. In 2009, my bottom-floor apartment was destroyed in a massive flood, but the movies were unharmed in their plastic containers. I live on an upper floor now, and I no longer have to worry about freakish nature situations, but the movies remain in these convenient containers. I do not organize mine by title for the most part, although I do keep my Blu-rays separate from my DVDs, and I'll group certain ones together (Bond movies, Akira Kurosawa movies). I have a Kurosawa plastic container, I have a "French New Wave" plastic container, and I have a "James Bond" plastic container. Other than that, the movies just go where they go. I found it impractical to organize my movies alphabetically, because I did not want to shift the movies around each and every time I purchased a new one. Instead, I simply put the new ones where I have space for them. Last edited by The Great Owl; 12-27-2012 at 06:09 PM. |

First by genre. Second, alphabetically. But I'm running out of room. May have to offload some DVDs that I'm not watching.
Currently I have lots of Blus stored in a 5-drawer dresser, but it's up to capacity now and have a lot of movies just laying about. |

I throw them in the closet as I've yet to find the storage I'm happy with. This method usually means the newest movies on top & furthest to the right lol.
Now that I think about it, slips in one row, none slips next, followed buy boxsets, digibooks then steelbooks. |

Never thought about that, which is funny cause I've used youtube to do everything from rooting my phone to cleaning my wife's coffee maker. Thanks!

I prefer keeping check of all my Blu-rays on the laptop and not just online. I have word documents and such but I really need a proper way to keep all my Blu-ray titles in one. There was a thread where people showed or explained how they kept their collections in order on their computer, just having difficulty finding it.

I have tried but can't come up with a good enough layout, which is strange considering I made databases for the TV shows I watch on Excel which are extremely elaborate and detailed. I'm extremely OCD when it comes to that so I just wanted to browse and see what other people have done for some sort of inspiration.

I put a few of the clear plastic cases in these large wooden chests in my living room, so it's easy to access the movies, and it's not as unsightly. As my collection has grown, however, there are six additional plastic cases lying around. Fortunately, my DVD collection will continue to shrink as my Blu-ray collection grows, because I'm upgrading a lot of stuff and trading the respective DVDs. I'm also trying to scale down my DVD collection in general. For this reason, there's no reason for me to have any more plastic cases now than I already have. |

I've replaced all my blue cases with colors that match the cover art. But most of my collection is slipcover/digibook/digipack/boxset so I've split my collection into those 5 categories. 200+ titles isn't that much so there's no need for organizing yet.
