If you click on my collection, that's the way it is organized. This makes it so easy to find any title in my library. I guess if my collection was smaller, I'd probably do it by genres or something like that. It's all about ease of finding a title and not worrying about the way it looks. Looks cool enough already.

Just a slight change from when I last posted, a while back - Digibooks, Steelbooks/Metalpaks, Criterions, and everything else ( "sections" are in alphabetical order, except for Criterions. Those go by spine number).
Space is becoming less of an issue since I've been letting go of a lot of stuff (just to get new stuff, but not as much as I'm getting rid of). Last edited by Majin Blu; 03-28-2015 at 11:36 AM. |

Right now, it's Steelbooks > Digibooks > TV > Alphabetical Order > G1-Sized. Then the DVDs follow that same order, and then finally the VHS tapes I still have. Then I have a separate shelf for my Criterion/Disney/Scream/TT titles.

Alphabetically organized by director if I have more than one film by them, if not, they go in a special section I call "stacks" that are organized alphabetically by title. The first title in my collection alphabetically is Jeanne Dielman by Chantal Akerman, and the last is Ghost World by Terry Zwigoff. The "stacks" start with 13 Assasins and run through Young Frankenstein. Bond, Disney and Pixar films get their own sections, again where they are listed alphabetically. Boxsets (James Dean, Val Lewton, Universal Monsters, Warner Gangsters) are also with the special sections. I worked in an independent video store years ago and they did it like this and it's always stuck!

at one time i had 3000 titles on DVD and Blu-Ray - all separated by format then Criterions by themselves by spine number. i sold off or gave away 90% of my collection and now i have dvds/blu-rays/criterions/etc all mixed together and every time i buy something i just throw it on the shelf - i like the unorganized look, like a book library. i have a movie loving friend with ocd and it freaks him out.

after I hit 500 titles years and years ago I abandoned sorting mostly alphabetically.
Now things are just on the shelf in the order in which I entered them into my cataloging software. I use the software to find what I'm looking for. I still try and separate 3D movies, Disney, kids flicks, Charles Band/Full Moon/Empire Pictures (big fan of these so they get their own section), anime, TV, and have just recently starting separating the boutique labels to their own sections so I know what I have and need with a simply quick glance (Vinegar Syndrome, Code Red, Scorpion Releasing, Kino, Scream/Shout Factory, Drafthouse Film, etc.) Ok so I guess there's more separation than I realised LOL |

I finally organized my physical Blu-ray collection this weekend.
After I bought a new home a few months ago, it became necessary for me to organize my movies, since I was no longer able simply to find a particular Blu-ray just by remembering when I purchased it and looking at where my cases were stored by order of purchase. Because of the way that my Blu-rays are stored in my home, it was not practical for me to put them in alphabetical order, because I needed a way to make room for upcoming purchases without having to rearrange periodically. I store my Blu-rays by genre categories now, with a few exceptions... Film noir Neo-noir Western Horror (all of my Vincent Price horror films are stored together in one of the horror cases) 1980s comedies/1980s fun dramas (John Hughes films, The Karate Kid, etc.) Science fiction/Fantasy Criterions (my Hitchcock Blu-rays are stored with Criterions in the Criterion stack, since it was simply the easiest option. However, most of my Criterion titles are stored with their respective genres, and the Criterion-exclusive cases are ones that are evasive to categorize.) James Bond (along with my Jean-Pierre Melville films...how cool and awesome is that?) Classic comedies (Billy Wilder stuff, Marilyn Monroe films, Audrey Hepburn films, etc.) Classic drama/romance Contemporary drama/romance Classic action/adventure/war "Guy movie" action flicks (First Blood, Chuck Norris movies, Charles Bronson movies) Exploitation/Trashy/WTF? movies (Revenge of the Cheerleaders, Dr. Goldfoot and the Bikini Machine, etc.) Digibooks (just because it's easier and safer to store them together) Not an exact science, since musicals and animated films are generally stored interchangeably in the comedies or drama sections, but it all works. Much better now. Last edited by The Great Owl; 12-06-2015 at 09:05 PM. |

I have my bluray.com organized the same as I do on my shelf more or less. By certain criteria then by alphabet.
-Special format (70mm, IMAX, Cinerama, Classic 3D, 3D) -By Criterion, Documentary, Pre-1970, Post 1970, Series Sets, Fave Director (Tarantino, Kubrick, Anderson, Nolan, Kieślowski) -TV organized by series and year Some categories have priority (a 70mm will go with 70mm instead of with director, criterion will go with the director group vs with the criterion group) Its a mess but it works for me. Don't recommend it for much larger collections or anyone, really. ![]() Last edited by applemac; 12-06-2015 at 06:46 AM. |

Snap. Mine is by genre, based on my own personal perception, and then within that classification first major series in release order, then the other titles in that genre alphabetically. I don't care about casings, studios, distributors or directors being mixed or separated -- my browsing habits run to "I want to watch a classic drama" or "I want to watch a creature feature", not "I want to watch something from Criterion". And if I want something by a specific filmmaker, I still know where to find them.

Alphabetical in categories: Action, Comedy, Drama, Horror, Sci-Fi, Christmas, TV, Docs... Works for me, I used to keep them simply alphabetized but found myself having a hard time finding something to watch, this way if I'm in the mood for a specific genre I'll just go to that section...

About 3000 discs.... All now live in Binders. TV on DVD, DVDs not on Bluray, Classic DVDs (1500+) have all been ripped to Hard Drives and sorted first by decade, then genre. All my Blu's are divided into Franchises, pre-1980, post-1980, and then alphabetized in binders.
I do miss having them in cases. I would often print custom covers if I disliked the retail cover. |

For the most part, Blu-rays, then DVDs, with films and television programs in the latter category separated. One DVD case is within the BD's (it's a Disney Blu-ray combo pack in a DVD case, but I still count it as a Blu-ray), and two Blu-rays are within the DVDs. I'm considering slowly rearranging them so they are all together, possibly by studio and release date, which, I already know, will be a lot of work.
