That is an amazingly well organized collection! My wife saw this and is sending me off to Ikea.

Firstly, by genre, then alphabetically, with a few exceptions. Have all my Criterions together, Scream Factory together, Disney animated canon together, and Best Picture Oscar winners together (in order of winning by year).

I do the same!
Which genre categories do you use?

I still like the idea of sorting by genre (because that's usually what I think about when I pick a movie to watch), but maybe I need to choose different categories. I love reading what other people do!
It goes like this (only Blu-ray):

Shelf 1 - HISTORICAL - ancient (Gladiator, Troy), medieval (Braveheart etc.) and XVI-XIXth century (including westerns), then FANTASY - starting from PoTC series which also fits to previous category, then - Conan, Willow LOTR etc.
Shelf 2 - VHS era action (Lethal Weapon, Rambo, Die Hard, Seagal movies, Van Damme movies etc), then MODERN ACTION (Craig's Bond movies, F&F, Taken etc.), WAR MOVIES (WW II and later - Fury, Platoon, BHD etc.), COMEDY, then VARIOUS (single examples of genres that I dont buy often, and some movies hard to assign) - Se7en, Pulp Fiction, Thelma & Louise, American Hustle.
Shelf 3 - SCI-Fi from VHS era (Terminator, Robocop, Alien, Blade Runner) to modern (new Star Trek series, Avatar, Transformers), SUPERHERO - X-universe/MCU/other Marvel/DCEU/other DC; ANIMATED,
Shelf 4 - CONCERTS (first BDs, then DVDs on the same shelf)

It goes the same way for DVDs, with the difference that there's more genres there that I dont buy anymore or buy them only from time to time (so BDs go to VARIOUS category).

And those categories are organized by theme and franchise - for example - SCI-FI goes like this - killer robot : Death Machine/Hardware/Terminator (cyborgs/androids) so the next is Robocop - futuristic cop, so the next is Judge Dredd (and Dredd) - it has elements of cyberpunk so there goes Total Recall and Blade Runner, then Alien which could be set in the same world after all. And after Alien there's AVP, so the next is Predator. The Matrix stands next to Inception, then there is Avatar and John Carter and so on. Sometimes I reorganize that order, for example Judge Dredd stood next to Mad Max once (cause there are some post-apo elements), and there is Resident Evil Extinction next to Mad Max for obvious reasons.

So where's all your Romantic Comedies and Dramas? Haha, just kidding. I need to add a Fantasy genre... that would help with some of those titles I'm not sure where to put! I also like your method of going VHS era to modern era within the genres. Good ideas, thanks for responding.

There are some romantic movies on BD in COMEDY and VARIOUS categories. There is also a DVD shelf with all my wife's movies from that genres.

I have mine arranged alphabetically, by genre, with numbers preceding letters. I've also separated my Criterion titles from the bulk of my collection. Top to bottom, left to right, mine are ordered as follows:

DVDS:
Criterion DVD's
Action / Adventure
Animated / Anime
Comedy
Documentary
Drama
Foreign
Horror
Musical
Science Fiction / Fantasy
Western

Television shows: DVD/Blu Rays mixed alphabetically.

Blu Rays:
Criterion Blu-Rays
Action / Adventure
Animated / Anime
Comedy
Documentary
Drama
Foreign
Horror
Musical
Science Fiction / Fantasy
Western

For me, this works best. The major genres are separated without having too much fragmentation as to create confusion when looking for a certain title.

I am happy to see so many non-alphabetical options out there.

Bulk of collection is now by genre, a lot of it is also organized by labels, scream, code red, kino, arrow.

I've had it organized alphabetically and by studio in the past. Currently really like by genre and have no plans to change. My wife complains that it was easier to find stuff when it was alphabetical.

I used to put everything in alphabetical order regardless of format. I recently switched to grouping all of the blu rays together alphabetically and then all the dvds alphabetically and it makes it look so much more attractive on the shelf. I also separate out steelbooks and put them together alphabetically but the Criterion are in spine number order. Box sets are displayed prominently and not lined on a shelf.

I put em in weight order (lightest to heaviest).

It's a pain, because I have to use an analog produce receiving scale.

What's wrong with that method? It's just as logical as any other method that's not alphabetical!

I have four major sections for my blurays:

Jean Claude Van Damme movies
Arnold Schwarzenegger movies
Other movies that kick ass
Everything else

It's a little unconventional.

I am in process of trying by genre. I think I like it better. Once I get done I will put some labels on my shelves to assist the rest of my family.

How do you deal with movies that are multiple genres?
