I have them sorted alphabetically for the most part but sequels go together (Dark Knight and Batman Begins would be sorted under "Batman") and the 007 movies would be under "J" although for some reason I decided to leave Casino Royale by itself instead of including it with the other 007 movies.

I remember when I used to do that. It was a good system, until I had over 150 movies and it just got cumbersome to sort them that way. Nowadays, I sort my DVD and Blu-ray movies together in a 5-shelf bookshelf alphabetically (though movie series are stored together in order of release, like the James bond movies, with the two box sets at the end, Matrix, star wars, Lord of the rings). TV shows are sorted separately, because well, I lack for shelf space (I keep saying I will get a new bookshelf, but I never do). There really is no method to my sorting of the TV shows beyond keeping each individual series together and in order. You can see in my HT Gallery how I have these set up.

Color, I have my dvds set up in a section arranged so that the colors blend into the other cases, hot colors together, cool colors together, black cases together, white cases together, same thing is happening with my blu's on their own shelf. Of course I am an OCD professional artist....

this is how my organization breaks down..
1. Genre 2. by Director (chronologically) 3. roughly by year 4. Box shape (digibook, boxset) I've been thinking about going the alphabetic route lately since the amount of movies is getting out of hand. So maybe one weekend I'll re-arrange them by 1.Genre 2.Alphabetically I like them being grouped by genre so that when I want to watch a comedy I can look at my comedies and when I want something else I go to that section. |

I have an easy system thats difficult to comprehend for a lot of people.
First of all, I sort out the movies that belong together (Batman Begins, Gotham Knight, The Dark Knight, Batman) After that I sort them by subgenre (Superhero, comicbook, Zombie, Buddy action comedy). Then I sort the subgenres after the genres they cross over (Superhero = Action, adventure and Sci-Fi). Then, if it is possible, I try to par movies from the same director (Kubrick/Burton/Tarantino...) Last I try to sort out my favorite movies in front of the next genre. Just an example: Dawn of the Dead - Evil Dead - Shoot´em up - Sin City - The Dark Knight - Transformers - Pirates of the Caribbean and so on... |
