I feel like blu-ray has, by and large, the worst cover art when compared to the older formats like VHS and DVD even. For whatever odd reason, so many blus come out with these awful photoshop nightmares, whereas the older formats often just used the posters made for the movies, which have more of a classic feel to them. The only exception might be if they have specially commissioned artwork for a new release, though even that can often end up being an overly-complicated looking mess, compared to the original one-sheet.

Also, while I understand the reasoning behind it (differentiation with red HD-DVDs), I've always hated the blue cases for blu-rays and find that it regularly clashes with the cover art of the movie.
I disagree, dvd covers were far worst than blu ray. Pretty much ALL dvds had awful photoshop covers. At least with blu ray we have smaller labels like Arrow, scream, etc who, while they do give us new artwork, pretty much always give us the option of the original posters with reversible artwork, which is something I love.
I think blu ray finally brought back my love for movie art that had been gone since the days of VHS. Dvd imo were the ugliest format. Not that there weren't any good ones (I love my Dawn of the dead Ultimate edition for example) but by and far they were mostly awful redesigns. :P

I’ve got all my horror movies together in alphabetical order on one big bookcase. The rest of my collection is sorted by genre but in no particular order, so all the comedies randomly thrown together etc.

I have a large bookcase and a small, cheap DVD shelf I've had for years. I've split it between the two. I used to have it in alphabetical order, but recently I decided to group them by label, alphabetically. I like the uniformity of how it looks on the shelf.

I used to sell my older copies whenever I upgraded to a new format but each time I prefered the older packaging (like for my Jaws blu ray digbook for example, that was the pride of my collection, which I replaced with the newest 4K with the very disappointing cover), I always had a hard time and so much regrets afterward. Oh, the regrets! lol
Never again now. I keep any editions I like when I upgrade. Cheap dvd or blu ray with nothing special about them I sell when I upgrade but when I like the older editions, I keep them. I rebought my Jaws blu ray a few weeks ago for half of what I sold it for and I sleep better at night now hehe. :P
Same with steelbooks. I used to hate having to choose between a good steelbooks and a nice 4K versions with the slipcover (like my The Meg steelbook and the Warner 4K with the slipcover). I just keep both now, this way I don't regret getting rid of a version I love.
It does mean my shelves are getting more full. Plus, most movies I never keep more than one versions, it's really just the versions I really love. With Jaws I went a little bit crazier, I'm up to 8 different versions of the first movie and 2 of the second one (and I ain't stopping anytime soon lol).
Plus, it means that if I have a beautiful blu ray steelbook and suddenly there's a 4K version coming out, I get to keep both now, no regrets. My wife ain't exactly on board with this but that's life.

These will make their way up into the living room once I can find the right piece or shelving/cabinet for them! I do have Drive, it just isn't in the pic!

MCU, DCU and X-Men. Anything else is just randomized.

Lately I've been having the radical idea of including my dvd's into my blu-ray collection. Does anyone else do that here?

Yep I do! I do have that many dvds. I mean its really not that big of a deal to me to include them. Because for example...Cheaper By The Dozen with Steve Martin doesn't have a BD release just on dvd a BD then the 2nd one does have a BD release so it just makes sense to put those together. Pee Wee's Big Adventure has been on Blu-ray and big top pee wee doesn't have a blu just a dvd. I like the fact to have all the ones that go together side by side despite what format they are on. Plus studios have been on a roll lately with releasing catalog titles so dvds are dwindling down at least for me.

I used to cringe seeing dvd intermingled with blu-rays, but I have dvds that have no blu-ray release, or just haven't upgraded and keep them in a separate shelf or stored away in the garage. I kinda want my collection to be a movie collection rather than just limiting it to blu-ray only.

Chaotically in boxes and bins still. I've been trying to downsize a bit and it's a struggle since I can probably get rid of say 50 at a time and then buy just as many in a short amount of time. I'm probably like a lot of people where I'll watch a movie and am overly generous in thinking it's okay enough to keep when in reality I probably don't really need it. And other times I'll not really care for a movie and then go read others' opinions and reviews online and then decide to keep it for another viewing in the future. A lot of more casual interest movies I'm looking back and saying to myself I probably should've just streamed or considered digital.

Once your collection reaches a certain size you stop looking at it as separate formats and instead just start looking at it as a library of films ala video stores of old. Organizing by genre's with formats intermixed suddenly becomes a lot of appealing and practical then trying to separate by some other random sorting method.

I put mine in cd cases to save room and color code them alphabetically:
DVD = Grey
Blu-ray = Blue
4K = Black

I have mine organized by label. Then for stuff from studios it's broken down in this order: Steelbooks, Digipaks, 4K UHDs, boxsets/mulitipacks, standard cases. On top of my two shelves I have Arrow LEs and Shout Factory box sets. At the bottom of one shelf my DVDs are in no particular order, with the exception of my MST3k boxsets.

In my head that first part is true, but the last... Maybe I have too many (one and a half times dvd as blu), but to me they look dreadful intermixed.

Mine are sorted by genre within country of origin for the larger players, country alone for the smaller. A few collections get singled out (Gkids, Criterion, Eclipse, Ghibli, No Shame...).

I build custom shelving to accommodate my OCD organizing. One shelf is strictly boutique, alphabetical by label, then by "Edition", then by film name. For example, Arrow is first. Large box sets first, then their regular Limited Editions, then the single standard editions. Blue Underground is next, then Criterion, and so on.

My non-boutique stuff is in separate shelving with odd sized shit like this
[Show spoiler]
and this
[Show spoiler]
first, followed by Digibooks, followed by plain cases. All alphabetical, of course. I recently removed all of my slipcovers to create a more uniform look and I am pretty damn happy with it.

TV shows, documentaries and music / concert type Blu-rays are on yet another separate shelf, alphabetically by name.

I use 2 Custom Built Shelves

1 For TV shows
1 For Movies

Both are organized Alphabetically
