Genre and sub-genre. I have a horror section and a sci-fi section. Shark movies go together, slashers go together, kaiju movies go together. Miscellaneous stuff just hangs about. Each area has its own rules, my Godzilla movies would be in release order but the Frankenstein stuff would be organized by studio and so forth. My superhero section is organized by character but it has gotten complicated lately.
Couldn't get into alphabetical. I don't want the third Evil Dead movie hanging around in the A's or having Dracula movies all over the place instead of together. It just doesn't work for me. I mix formats, but if I completely replace a section from DVD to Blu-ray, I might move the DVDs to storage to save space. |

![]() I get what you mean though. Take the Hammer Horror films with Dracula - alphabetical does mess that up a bit as the titles change so much (Dracula, Taste the Blood of Dracula etc.). |

By Genre, Decade and alphabet.
I have sections for Silent, Horror (Pre-'70), Horror (Post-'70), Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Western, Music Performance, TV Movies,3D, Musical, Crime & Noir and Animation. (Not shown: TV Series, any films related to Beatles, Elvis and Sinatra have their own sections and are in a large spinner rack. Christmas films are in a cabinet and come out at holiday time.) Films that don't fall into those caregories are filed by year: 1930/1959, 1960/1989, and 1990/Now All are alphabetical within their sections. ![]() Last edited by charlieray1; 08-08-2023 at 06:31 PM. |

Over 1000+ disc/blu ray/dvd movies, I had to resort to fitting them in plastic large storage bins in a storage room, so I organize them by horror, favorites (all genres), 3D blu rays, animation, and then movies I probably wouldn't watch much again (usually ones I would buy in the $5 below new movie bins at Circuit City, Walmart and other stores, rather than renting them for the same price).
I still have a 100 pound box of VHS movies in storage too that I should probably find a better box for. VHS tapes were way too heavy and bulky, so I was happy DVD arrived by 1997. |

What's interesting is that these collections fans have may soon become the only source of disc based movies in 20 years, if disc format eventually fades to a trickle, with no more support from major distributors like WB. Considering Disney is dumping their support of discs in Australia to start.
![]() Thankfully the smaller studios/labels will hopefully continue releasing disc format for the next 50 years maybe. I like to have my favorite movies on disc. These days, there are theatrical movies that hit theaters briefly, then go straight into streaming pay services without ever hitting disc format. ![]() As far as a digital collection,Tubi TV lets you save all of your favorite movies/series in a single list, but no option to sort them yet. |

Most of mine are in boxes currently due to lack of space. Otherwise, they'd be sorted alphabetically, but with exceptions... Marvel/DC, Bond or other connected series would be kept together, and in order (Dark Knight would go after Batman Begins. Rogue One would go with the other SW movies etc).
TV shows and boxsets would also be separate and I'd consider it for Disney animated movies too.... Blu rays/DVDs separately as well. Last edited by J999; 08-09-2023 at 12:21 PM. |

That's why I divide them further. I have a 'alien' section that includes Alien, War of the Worlds, Independence Day, ET, etc.
Since my horror area is within eye-sight, this is how it currently looks -Slasher section, which starts off organized by franchise/character (TCM, Halloween, Friday, Elm Street, etc) and eventually breaks off into miscellaneous slashers. -Demonic horror - Exorcist, Omen, Evil Dead, Insidious, Conjuring, ghost stuff like Amityville and Poltergeist -Classic monsters, divided by character (Dracula, Frankenstein, werewolves, etc etc.) -Classic horror (mostly black and white movies, similar themes are grouped together.) -Zombies (Starts off with Romeo, the rest isn't too specific.) -Miscellaneous (starts off with anthology films, goes into more horror/comedy stuff, mixed multi-film sets) |

I have a glass cabinet of films out in the hall, which is maxed. I have two small piles on top of my bookcase that I need to go through and about four boxes in a cupboard (mainly tv blu-rays now, which won't fit in the cabinet). I used to have stacks but tried to reduce it over the last 2-3 years. My general approach now is, what films do I really like and watch a lot. |

I went from Alphabetical to Label then Format and now I'm working on shaking it up. This is what I've got so far:
Charles Bronson Chuck Norris Steven Seagal John Wayne Arnold Schwarzenegger Jungle Cannibal movies Giallos Shot on Video movies I think I'm going to separate out slashers and other stuff. Or abandon it all together and go back to one of the other ones. It's rough. |

Chronological by release date. I love to see the sweep of film history reflected on my shelves, from silents to studio system to French New Wave to New Hollywood and beyond. Then I do have my two era-spanning franchises in their own spot: James Bond and Star Wars.

One of my favorites was alphabetical with the exception of keeping series together, but DVDs next to blus and 4ks just starts to look like a mess when its altogether. To me anyway. Separating by format still keeps things like sequels that are only on blu-ray away from their 4K brothers and it gets annoying too. |
