Usually by studio, then alphabetically (for standard cases). SE/LE releases (in non-conventional packages) are shelved separately based on size, then alphabetically. Blu-rays do not mingle with the standalone DVDs: apartheid, Hollywood style.

For my DVDs I used to always do it by genre (Action, Westerns, War, Family, Comedy, Animation, Christmas, Horror, etc.) but it was hard sometimes with movies like Shaun of the Dead, comedy or horror? So many movies can be classified in 2 or 3 genres.

Recently all my DVDs are #, A-Z. Divided by Movies + TV miniseries, then concerts, then documentaries, then TV shows, and my drum stuff. So much easier filing this way.

My Blu-rays only take up one shelf; A-Z movies, then concerts. The same order as they are in My Collection.

I keep all the releases with slip covers or other custom packaging seperated from the rest.

Then,.... I would alphabetize by studio but ... there's just random now and I can't be bothered. I will put all the "kids stuff" in one place so that when my kids are trying to find Snow White they don't ask me about stuff like True Blood.

My blurays are in alphabetical order. My DVD's on the other hand are random outside of sequels which are kept together.

I've very lazy, but I only have twenty blu rays so it doesn't really matter. Once I get more I will probably organize them by genre, and then alphabetically.

It's really up to you mate. I personally have them A-Z then #'s followed by Disney & Disney/Pixar Animated classics in order of their theatrical release.

Heavy ones on the bottom shelf, lighter ones up higher...in no particular order other than sets (i.e. rocky) are together

Here is what I do:
  • All horror and holiday themed movies together.
  • Disney movies together
  • Concert BDs together
  • Movies and their sequel together
  • All superhero/DC Animated movies together
  • TV series together
  • Box sets together
  • And all the others are just mixed together.

I like to keep digibook's with digi's etc. Most of my slipcovers all all on the same shelf. No alphabetizing.

I really didn't care at first, but then I got addicted to BDs. Now I have it in alphabetical order (numbers first). It's just easier for everyone who wants to view them.
