When you have a large collection, these issues crop up and need reassessed occasionally. I try to keep my organization logical, but it has definitely got a bit idiosyncratic. I would put the Bourne films under B. But my James Bond section is under J, and my Sherlock Holmes section under S. For me, it's about how these fictitious characters are normally known.
Generally, I have separated my genres by SF/Horror, Drama/Action/Comedy, Fantasy/Mythology, Superheroes, Comedy Cartoons (otherwise my animation is spread throughout the genres). |

People getting uptight about movie organization is funny, I organize my movies by studio, the studio logos are usually the same, line up really good. I only break the rules if trilogies fall into different studio hands. I personally think it looks good, but alphabetically is easier to find movies I'm sure.

I've got my dvd's, HD DVD's and BLU's all separate and in alphabetical order. I also have separate sections for animated, kung-fu and westerns, when there's enough of them.
Right now I only have those 3 genres separated on my standard dvd rack. HD DVD's and BLU's have their own rack. Last edited by Packerfan75; 01-25-2010 at 04:16 AM. |

Plus if you feal a bit different later on you can always move it. My catagopries (at this time) Fancy box (top shelf to keep away from little hands) Not suitable for kids (as above) Horror Comedy Action Sci-fi Period pieces (take place in the past like knights or cowboys or even Indiana Jones) TV shows Concerts Seasonal (Christmas, Easter…) Kids animated Kids live action None Hollywood War Bond Other (this includes Drama, girly, musicals….) unseen (bought movie and have not seen "all" the content yet, so for TV series means all the episodes, for collections means all the movies in it) Last edited by Anthony P; 01-25-2010 at 11:32 PM. |

Mine are in alphabetical order on custom (built into the wall) shelves. I keep the high def movies separate from the DVDs so I have Blu-rays and HD DVDs intermingled in alphabetical order.
Every once in awhile, I get up in the morning and find all of the HD DVDs on the floor. I guess the Blu-rays kicked them out! ![]() Mark |

I am currently facing this MAJOR issue right now, before I started buying Blu Ray I had sold all my DVD's and ripped all the content to HDD's for viewing using a WDTV HD Media Player, which was working perfectly until two things happened, 1 I got a Blu Ray player, and 2, my parents and I decided to try opening a video rental store, which meant buying DVD's again.
So now I have over 250 DVD's and almost 50 Blu Rays and just barely 6 HD-DVD's and I need to get them all organized into a system that works better than just tossing them on the floor and flipping through a big mess of plastic. I have 2 Blu Ray sized DVD stands that only fit Blu Ray and HD-DVD sized cases, right now I have 1 for Blu Ray and the other for HD-DVD, but since I am quickly filling up on Blu Ray and just occasionally grabbing HD-DVD as I go I might just combine the two into 1 large collection and deal with it that way. Of coarse it would also require the HD-DVD and Blu Ray players both hooked up to the same TV set which currently they are not. As for the DVD's I have those all stacked right now in piles on the floor and have 2 book shelves that I might organize for DVD usage but I also have a shit load of books to also put on the book shelves, real books mind you not Digibooks that come with Blu Rays. (yes I am old fashioned I actually read) So either I try and cram over 200 DVD's onto 1 book shelf and devote the other to actual books or I find a way to spread them out over 2 shelves and just leave my books in the great big box they are currently in. Either way it is a massive project the would require more energy, and time, than I have or am willing to devote so as of now I have 1 huge mess to deal with and no desire to deal with it. Long, pointless post, I know but that's me. |

My Blus are seperated from my DVDs. I basically arrange all my movies by genre then director/actor. For instance I'll have all my action together but grouped by either movie series or the director who did it. If I have a movie that is standalone, it'll usually be by actor. Perfect example is I have Seth Rogan movies all together with Zack and Miri at the end, which then leads into my Kevin Smith blu-rays.
Gets difficult with DVDs when it comes to all the SNL alums, especially Bill Murray and Chevy Chase. |
