By studio. And then by spine. Try to match up the slight differences in the way the spines are designed by studio. Not all BDs by the same studio have the same spine design.

For example. Universal. Some spines have a shiney silvery-blue bottom, others a flat light blue bottom.
Others like Sony Picutres with its subdivisions of Columbia-Tristar and Screengems, also have those separated.

To me alphabetical is too chaotic. Basically for the reason I stated above.

Alphabetically on shelves and listing them with Excel. So far I've the database is categorized first by movie, next comes films release year, country of release, price, and finally film review (in my mothers language).

I originally did that on my shelf, then created categories with my bookshelf/DVD case. All major movies in one section, Disney/anime in another, and specialty on a third (HBO series, UFC, etc). Then my LE sets like The Notebook just hang out on top since it doesn't fit on the shelf.

My collection is simply done #-Z. I've started buying a few tv shows/documentaries though, so I might end up taking them out and putting them separately ahead of my movies. As for franchises, I bought replacement multi-disc Blu-Ray cases so they all stay together without being out of place alphabetically (they also look nicer in one case with a custom cover and save shelf space).

I organize my Blu-rays by genre and then alphabetically. I group some things together, like Pixar and James Bond movies, and put them in chronological order.

So far its alphabetically, with a few on display to the side. All my DVD's though are in random order but in that perfect random order that I know where to look when I have to find it

Same here, VanDammage. I have some pictures on another thread of my erstwhile epically-horrific organization system, but since I moved to another apartment last month I've organized my Blu-Rays alphabetically. It makes the most sense.

I have so many DVDs that they're stored in four different areas of my place, but also "in that perfect random order that I know where to look when I have to find it".

right now i have them in alpha

buy i think i may change it around too

favourite directors 1st, in alpha, and the titles in alpha,
and then the rest by genre, in alpha

i was thinking about studio, but some sequels are release by different studios
i dont want to split them up, but i could break that rule

getting tired of alpha, need a change

I usually order my movies by category and within each category order them by release date from right to left, right being older. Of course ifa movie is part of a trilogy or such, then date ordering rule is ignored for those movies.

For my blu-rays since I have so few, they just happen to not only be perfectly matched by type and release date but also by blu-ray distributor.

I have mine organized by the year the movie was released, except for the sequels, which come directly after the first movie.

you could be extra kooky and have them alphabetical by year. lol

i have my movies (dvds and blu-rays) seperated from the music dvds and tv shows.. but they're alphabetical order, except movie series are chronological even if they're not alphabetical (ie: Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets wouldn't come before Sorcerer's Stone)

Here's how I organize my collection.

VHS: gave them away to friends 6-7 years ago when I got the rid of my player.

DVDs: Boxed up and stored in my shed forever. (except for a very few nice boxsets and arround 10 of my favorite titles not annouced on blu-ray yet)

Blu-Rays/HD-DVDs: By format, #-Z.
Steelbooks, digibooks, boxsets & TV shows appart alphabetically.

It'll soon need to be organized if you don't want to spend the evening searching the movie you want to watch.
