genre/sub genre

that way you find the exact movie easy if you want or just something you are in the mood for

categories now are

fancy box (high on the shelf out of reach)
not suitable for kids (high on the shelf out of reach)
Horror (high on the shelf out of reach)
apocalyptic horror (I needed to split Horror since it did not fit on one shelf)
Comedy
animated (kid)
none-animated kid movies
mega movie series (I have 6+ BD s in the collection- right now 007 and Saw)
seasonal
action
war
past (cowboys, medieval, sword & sandal....)
music
comics/cartoon/toys
none-English (movies meant to be seen in an other language)
TV series
scenic (not real movies with a plot, things like Roving mars, blue planet....)
Drama/musical/other
unseen (Items I purchased and have not watched/finished watching yet)

unseen is good because that way you know what you have seen and if you don't care you can look there first. Genre is good because that way you can see the type of film you want, for example this month because of 31 days of horror all I care about is Horror so I mostly need to look at those two shelves (mostly since I will wait for Saw when Saw 3D comes out but AVP fall under comic book movies since they are based on the graphic novel, Shaun of the dead and Zombieland I have under comedy since I don't think they could come even close to frightening anyone)

I used to have it all sorted by ABC order, but recently changed it.

Right now:

DVD:
TV Has a shelf
Foreign has a shelf
ABC order has a shelf
Anime has a shelf

UMD:
ABC Order

Blu-Ray/HDDVD:
Formats combined, separated by genre (Action/Adventure, Horror, Comedy, Drama, Music, TV, Documentary, Sci-Fi, Anime, Animation)

Not sure what the best format is. ABC is nice so you can easily find a movie. Genre is nice so you can say "I wanna watch a comedy" and look through only the 50 comedies instead of all 450.

The hard part about genre is where to draw the line - where does horror/comedy go? or action/sci-fi?

My family's DVD collection is a disorganized mess.
My anime DVD/BD collection in my room is organized by genre.
Me and my family's BD collection is organized alphabetically.

By Genre/Sub Genre
Then Alphabetically for the most part

Some sections are by year, for example I keep all the Disney animated movies together and they are organizied by year (i.e. Snow White is first and as of today Princess and the Frog is last)

Disney/Pixar is after Disney which brings up my 2nd exeception, sequels I place in order. For example It goes Toy Story, Toy Story 2, (Toy Story 3 ASAP) and THEN A Bug's Life...this is true for other sequels for example Dark Knight immediately follows Batman Begins and Road Warrior follows Mad Max, and Bond is all together, arranged chroniogically with Dr. No first and Quantum (for now) last

Some Directors have their own collection set apart. I own every Hitchcock film and they are all together on one shelf arranged chronologically, Chaplin is altogether, as is Buster Keaton, Monty Python. I had considered say a Scorsese shelf but his films are too varied. I have a shelf for gangster films and most of his work is there, alphabetically with other titles, and Raging Bull is in Drama...p.s. Where The Hell Is Taxi Driver on Blu!!!???!!

On a side note: I have a shelf for musicals but I'm considering separating them by "classic" musicals and "rock" musicals because pretty soon its going to be Rocky Horror followed by Sound of Music...and I just don't think they wanna sit next to each other

my DVDs and Blu-rays freely co-mingle and no doubt party after the lights go out

I only have 22 Blus right now so I order alphabetically. I used to order then by purchase date since I had so few. My DVDs are ordered alphabetically too on a lower shelf.

I alphabetize mine. It's much easier to find a certain movie that way.

Alphabetical -- blu-rays, dvds, tv sets, actor sets all together on 3 large wall multimedia units. I can find a movie much easier that I want to watch.

I alphabetize my movies. However, if it's a movie series I put them all together in another drawer.

Right now I just stack them in two piles (with slipcovers and without) until I can find a decent cabinet to store them in.

I organize by genre....personally I think its the best way. So much easier to find a movie when you want to watch it.

But in the end there is no wrong way to organize...it comes down to personal opinions on what's best for you.

Alphabetically within their respective studio. It looks the best because the spines match up.

My collection is organized by studio. First the blus with slipcovers then the blus without the slipcovers.
