It just cuts down a large collection into many smaller ones that are very focused to your mood. Now, I will agree, if someone else comes to my home and wants to see Shaun of the dead or Zombieland, they might look in Horror and not find them there because I consider them comedy while if they want Army of Darkness it will be in Horror so there are some titles that fit multiple genres and so it is up to the person to decide where thy feal it fits most. But since I choose where they better fit, I know where they are.

Titles fitting multiple genres is one of the the main reasons I like it to just be in alphabetical order. Don't have to remember where I put something that way. I also haven't experienced the want for one genre in particular yet. Usually just glance at a shelf and grab whatever looks good at the moment. Although, I can see how this might turn into some kind of problem if I had enough videos to rival a small rental store, haha.

I will also admit that I haven't dealt with large collections of movies yet, kinda just recently started this hobby, but I guess I do technically sort my large collection of games in a similar way. Except they're just sorted by format (when they're not boxed up in storage >.<), would be kind of annoying to me when I want to play a game on a certain system, but I have to weed through the games on all the other systems.

i started putting my blus in order of genre as well because for whatever reason it really irked me to see Zack and Miri Make A Porno followed by Zodiac, followed by Zombieland. so i started with the genres:

TV series
Pixar
Animation
Comedy
Drama
Sci-Fi
Horror
Action / Adventure

although some films fit multiple genres and it's a pain in the ass to decide.

like (500) Days of Summer. it's a romantic comedy, but also can be supported as a drama. i put it as a drama because this is the only romantic film i own, and it would bug me to only have 1 in that "section" (i may add more as time goes on, but i'm thinking TODAY). and while it is funny, it seems odd to put that with the likes of The 40 Year-Old Virgin, Superbad, Wedding Crashers and others. so to "drama" it went

It is not that you would be too dumb, but after the last post I just wanted to make sure we understand each other. When you where saying how in Alphabetical it is easy to go to H to get hangover I wanted to make sure you did not think Category just meant unsorted. After all there are people that do studios, people that do colour of packaging. Who knows what everyone does.

you don't, also genres are personal, so you don't care what it is IMDB or the store but how it affected you when you saw it or personal reasons. For example I consider Zombieland and Shaun of the dead as comedies so they are there, on the other hand even though Army of Darkness, if taken on its own, is more of a comedy then horror, because I want it with Evil dead and evil dead 2 it is in Horror. You don't need to remeber because it is "natural" to you.

I did the same when I started with DVD and BD, Alphabetical works when there is no choice and categories with less then 5 items become a joke. But once a collection reaches a certain size then it is easier to say "it is Halloween, I want a horror movie" or "I need a laugh let's watch a comedy" or "I want to escape with sci-fi" or "there are kids so let's put an animated movie (or live action aimed at kids)" and instead of going through all of them you just go through that category. Also, at last for me, the categories change over time, once a sections become too big then I start splitting them. My philosophy, a category should be limited to one shelf, once I get a bit past that I think of how to subdivide. I just did it last month with horror while drama chickflics and musicals are mashed together in one category.

My dvds are stashed all over the place, with just tv series and movies not in alphabetical order.
I reorganized the BD into alphabetical order last week, no categories there.

I have no shelf space. I still have not found the right rack. I might start putting the least watched BD's in a box, but I list my BD's in alphabetical order starting with Numbers such as 300, or 2012.

Alphabetically of course. I have room on my shelves at the moment, so I took out the boxsets and are displaying the fronts, which is done alphabetically. I also have the movies I've never seen separated so I have an easy time picking out something to watch.

I"m still organizing my home theater and collection, but really need to get some pics loaded.

Single MOVIE titles of HD DVD and Blu-ray are co-mingled, alphabetically. Non-movie titles (concerts, etc.) are also co-mingled alphabetically, but shelved in their own "section". Multi-movie box sets are also shelved separately (also alphabetically). Remaining DVD titles are not mixed with the HD discs.

I started collecting HD DVD first. Once I started collecting Blu-rays (and co-mingling them with HD DVD), I woke up one morning and found this:

At that point, the HD DVDs still outnumbered the Blu-rays so I guess the HD DVDs won the fight!

BTW, that photo is pretty old. We remodeled the house 2 years ago and those 70's look built-in shelves (came with the house) have been replaced with this:

Everything is organized by director, chronologically, and then movies I own which aren't in my directors series are stored alphabetically. My TV sets are stored alphabetically as well unless it's something like this: I have my Joss Whedon stuff together -- Firefly, Serenity, Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog, Dollhouse -- in that order.

Anime then TV Shows, then movies alphabetically with 0-9 in front

though things like 2 Fast 2 Furious just go with the rest of the series, also the Narnia movies are kept together under N for Narnia

stealth edit: oh except for Criterion releases which go at the front of the movies

My buddy does it the same way with his near 400 blu's. I personally just do it alphabetically by the movie title though! That might change later, who knows.

Yesterday I put my Bookshelves & all my Blu's in my bedroom to make room in the Home Theater.

They are now all in alphabetical order starting with numbers first, with the single movies on the left. The Trilogies are in alphabetical order on the right.

Everything alphabetical. Numbers as written ex '9' under 'nine'. With similar numbered titles they are organized numerically from lowest number. (ex 12 rounds,21,27 dresses, 28 weeks later, 2012 etc.) TV series also on name.

The bottom 2 shelves are unwatched films (!), with the one at the very bottom being unwatched re-buys, and the other unwatched and never seen.

I have room for 2 more shelves at the bottom, so total capacity will be approx. 1600 blu before I have to expand sideways.

Bigger Boxsets are stored where there is room

amazing collection but one little thing is that bottom shelf where your superman box set is where the heat comes out? I see some sort of vent behind it
