It depends on the packaging style. My black-spine Warner Bros. titles are together, the boxsets have their front covers on display, those with slipcases are together... you get the idea. I really dislike the idea of organising your collection alphabetically. I used to do this with my DVDs, but it looks rather messy.

I vacuum seal each title in a protective plastic sheath, then store them alphabetically in a temperature controlled housing built within a bank-vault quality safe. It takes about an hour to retrieve specific title, so visitors must make their movie requests a day in advance.

Variable_Star extracting his copy of "District 9". The ambiance is enhanced by several fog machines which activate upon opening the safe with the electronic key fob.

category. Except for some odd ones (fancy box: that I keep on the top shelf so the kids don't touch them; unwatched: that are movies have bought but not watched yet; TV which are TV seasons; none-English: movies meant to be seen in a none English market, so international movies like the Host but also Local French ones; R+: movies that I think are way too explicit) the rest are genres or sub-genres (i.e. action, horror, apocalyptic (end of world horror), cartoons, kid movies, sci-fi, long-ago/mythological (sword & sandals, medieval type, westerns, ww2 that are not war movies) , comic book/toys, concerts, war, seasonal, comedy, scenic (stuff that are not real movies) , others (includes dramas , musicals....)) I also split categories when they reach past one shelf (i.e. I already split off apocalyptic for horror and now I need to split some more.

PS except for unseen which is by length of play and fancy which has no order within each category they are alphabetical while keeping series/pseudo series together and ordered chronologically (so for example evil dead 1, evil dead 2 and army of darkness are in that order under evil dead even though they changed the name for the third.

Best responses ever.

Mine are sorted by region coding, and then alphabetically.

Im buying that shelf at Walmart tomorrow, and going to put my Blu-Rays in em.

The thing is though, I have normal Blu-Rays, some with slipcovers, and then I have a box set.

Should I use the box set, or take the Blu-Rays out of box set? What about slip covers ?

It will look messy if I add them ;(

I sort them by year released, running length, rating, director, actor, genre or title. I just load them into my media server and then throw the cases in cardboard filing boxes and stack them in the garage.

The larger the collection, the more of a pain it is to keep the physical discs organized.

I know it was you, Mr.Poindexter. You broke my heart. YOU BROKE MY HEART.

My father stores his DVDs in drawers, but I could never do it. I like to display my films.

alphabetical order for me

of course, there are some "structural changes" along the way. when i buy the Fast and the Furious franchise, 2 Fast 2 Furious is of course going after the first film and before the third.

otherwise it starts with films that start with time (3:10 to Yuma, then standard number films: 127 Hours, (500) Days of Summer, 2001) and then goes in alphabetical order.

tv shows, criterions, box sets... all go in alphabetical order. no exceptions there.

i also take slip covers off and they are on their own shelf, soon a box since i have quite a bit. i take them off so i don't get them damaged or scuffed up.

agreed.

this is what i plan on doing. once i own Batman Begins i will move The Dark Knight to the B's. same goes for Quantum of Solace, that will be in the C's once i own Casino Royale. would keep me up at night if it was any other way!

Me and my boyfriend separate them into 'genres' and then sort them alphabetically within that.

We're probably a bit over the top but oh well

I haven't run into many variables with BD yet (my collection is still very small), so it's pretty much alphabetical. I know with DVD, I organize alphabeticaly according to package type. All of my standard DVD cases are first, then those horrible cardboard click cases, then "special" packaging (which I hate worse than the clickers). I've only got a couple of special BD cases so far, so they're mixed in for now. I'm going to try & keep their numbers down, but as they do add up, I'll seperate them from the rest.

When sequesl/prequels don't share the same title (Romancing the Stone & Jewel of the Nile for example), I store them together with the first film in it's alphabetical place.

I tried by genre, then alphabetical, but found straight alphabetical was much less complictaed. Besides, so many movies can fit into multiple genres.
