I agree with there being to many black ones but I am sure it is because it flows with the cover art on front & back.

gah! i HATE photos like that! you better be kidding John

i hate that because it puts a lot of pressure on the case, which then might press the disc down. sure, nothing that would wreck it, but still. i'm super careful with my collection when dusting the shelves and cases so it takes a long time to move them, i couldn't imagine just stacking them like that!

Just put a few together for effect and make a point. So no, I don't keep them like that. As to my point, I really don't obsess about how my collection is arranged. I only have about 160 or so titles, so it's not very difficult to find something. Also, my cabinet closes, so I have no need to make it look pretty.

My vinyl collection is several thousand strong, and I don't even categorize it on the shelves. It can be a pain sometime if I'm looking for something specific, but more often I discover titles I haven't heard in a while, so I play them. I like that! There are only 2 things I do with that collection. One, I keep my boxsets together, and two, I keep my audiophile pressings together. Neither one however are categorized.

i hate that damn picture! i've seen it like six thousand times in the relatively short time i've been on this site!

i think what i hate most though is shelving units like this one: (beware, HUGE picture)

[Show spoiler]

because they have no room for special editions or "fatter" packaging (like Blade Runner, Alien Anthology, Up, Deadwood...) and they always, always, always tip over i used to have one like this years ago when i just had dvd's and cd's and every day i'd come home from school and have to re-organize the damn thing

The Criterion folks typically give the box set a spine number and then each title within it its own spine number. For some reason, the BBS set doesn't have it's own number but the individual titles do. This is typical only of the compilation box sets Criterion sometimes does, like Olivier's Shakespeare or Kurosawa's Samurai Classics, because the titles have been previously released individually and out of sequence over the years. The lack of a spine number for the BBS set as a whole has led some people to speculate that the titles might be released individually at some future date (or it might not mean anything, because giving the box its own spine number has always seemed kind of weird).

I find the whole spine number thing funny but kind of ingenious. I mean, you wouldn't arrange all of your WB films by catalog number (OK, someone somewhere probably does) but that's essentially what Criterion has people doing. For me, it's too weird to see Antichrist, Modern Times, The BBS Story, Cronos, and Broadcast News "in order."
Oh I do get what you mean. I currently don't have the shelf space for this future thing I'm planning on doing with the Criterion titles I own including the eventual Blus I'll be purchasing.

I don't own that one but I liked it and will probably get it some day...I really liked Keith's X-pensive Winos version of "Connection."
When I do eventually buy Music/Concerts on Blu-ray, which my wishlist has several, I'm putting them in their own section along with other titles in a similar fashion. But I think there're be some exceptions to certain titles especially in The Criterion Collection. Or maybe not. I'll know when I buy them!

EDIT: I'll be grouping them in order of band name and then original release year for concert, otherwise.

By titles. Numericals first, then alphabetically. Franchises generally together in order of release although currently I believe I have Batman Begins under B while The Dark Night is under D (heretical I know), as you may figure I ignore A, An and The as is customary. I do keep music-oriented BDs apart from the movie/TV-series BDs.
I do keep DVDs and BDs separately though, too much of a hassle re-organising 200 BDs within a 1000+ DVD collection now otherwise I would. I'm not too futzed about case sizes and I mix digibooks, steelbooks and whatnot with my regular plastic cases.

Default one of these days I'm going to get organizisied.

My daughter's movies are in drawers around the tv stand and entertainment center. Horror, miike, jodorowsky, and noe are in a locked cabinet. I have a director shelf, mixed blus and dvds, with aronofsky, park, nolan, mann, kubrick, anderson, darabont, fincher, tarantino hitchcock, leone.
My lady gets a shelf for her dvds and blus so she doesn't have to go through everything.
Historical epic, western, and anime.
Tv series and comedy.
Action and scifi.
Currently I have a blu shelf because I'm still catching up on a bunch I bought, cuz I admittedly freaked out a bit when we got a blu player and pimpovision tv in November.
I keep blus and dvds together because they're both movies, and I don't want another bookcase.

For me, it's the following:
- Disney (chronological)
- Pixar (chronological)
- 0-9 titles
- A-Z titles

I mix tv shows and movies since I only own 3 shows on BD... and I used to keep the slips but I liked how the collection looks without them... it gets more organized... so I only keep the slips that I really like (usually 3D ones). That's it! =)

Genre and by Slipcover.

All disney's with Slip covers go first, then the rest of the disneys (in no order), then the rest of the animations (starting with slips) and then comedy/horror/drama/action/James Bond/Unsorted

Once a month, I take all my unsorteds and resort everything. Pondering Alphabetical next......

By titles: numericals first, then alphabetically! But, I do keep franchises/sequels together!

Examples:
Dark Knight is under B with the other Batman movies
Incredible Hulk & Planet Hulk is under H along with the other Hulk movies
Quantum of Solace is under C along with Casino Royale
Serenity is under F along with Firefly

Well... I was bored and opted to do it alphabetically.. I get to the end, and I have 4 discs sitting next to me. Appears, I forgot to add 2 movies, the DVE disc and I just out right missed one shelving it. D'OH.

The more movies I get, the more complicated the groupings become.

With the "numerical sequencing" thing, I just don't know which system to trust...many say to follow the exact numerical order in a title, in other words:

1408
30 Days of Night
40 Year Old Virgin
88 Minutes

Etc.

But when I went into a local Best Buy the other day, I took notice to how they do their categories in DVD and Blu -- and they did it in ascending literal numerical order, like:

8 Mile
1408
2012

As if the numbers had to go into ascending order, regardless of the number they STARTED with -- that seemed weird to me, but I don't know the right official way of doing it...

that's just it. there is no "official" way. we all have our own ways and all that matters is that you like how you have it set up

Okay -- but still, there must be some...more "right" way of doing it as opposed to a method that most just don't think makes sense; for example: Here in the forum, everyone's collections are categorized by the system with numbers coming first, in this kind of order:

1408
28 Dresses
30 Days of Night
40 Year Old Virgin

Etc.

But as I said, I saw Best Buy doing it differently -- plus, in the CD section of the store, they actually had band names in their phonetic interpretation, the way I was doing it, like "3 Doors Down" being under "T" for "THREE Doors Down" etc...

yeah, but like, on this very site, (500) Days of Summer comes first because of the parenthesis, which is

i personally just do numbers in numerical order, with time films being first (a la 3:10 to Yuma, then 8 1/2, then 12 Monkeys and so on. that works best for me and just seems right. and unless a film has the numbers written out, it goes in the numbers.

does Three Doors Down right it as such or is it 3 Doors Down? if "three" is written out, i'd put it in the T's as well.
