Criterions are separate from the rest, and sorted by Spine number (with the exception of Brazil, that I'll get to later), with the exception of the BBS and Montery Pop set, I put those two together at the front of the row.
I've tried breaking mine down by "genres:" Classics (anything released before 1980, but not counting things like James Bond, Children's films, or anything that I've put in another genre.): Right now BDs are separated from the DVDs, but I'm thinking of merging them. The DVDs are currently organised in chronological order by release. In the case of multi-pack releases like the TCM sets, I go by chronological release order of the first title on the cover. Therefore, the Imitation of Life double pack is currently the first DVD on my shelf, due to to the 1934 version being listed first. The last film I have listed under Classics is currently The Rutles: All you Need is Cash. Disney/Pixar: Chronological order by release, with BDs mixed in with DVDs, Live action films mixed with Animated. Series films, such as Pirates of the Caribbean, are kept together and organised by the chronological order of the first film in the series. It's the reason why I have a Fox DVD amongst the Disneys, to keep the Narnia films together. Children's: Anything not by Disney/Pixar, organised by order of enjoyment, favourites at the front. Blus are separate TV series: Organised by order of enjoyment, similar to the the children's films. Biographical/Historical films (not docs, but stuff like Raging Bull, The Doors, etc): Chronological order according to the era in which the film was set in. Henry VIII with Ray Winston to Sid and Nancy is how it's currently organised. Blus are currently separate Horror films: Ordered by Enjoyment Comedies: Order by enjoyment, with some grouped together by actor, i.e, all the Bill Murrays are together, the John Candys are together, etc. Teen films (i.e. Clueless, Jawbreaker, My First Mister), organised by order of enjoyment, blus are mixed in. I've also grouped some films by director, such as the Terry Gilliams all go together (hence Brazil not being with the Criterions), The Christopher Guest films, and the Mel Brooks films. Kubrick is separated because his films cross too many genres, and several are under Criterion or Classics. Series such as Star Wars, LotR, Harry Potter, and James Bond are all kept together. The Beatles films are all kept together. The Carry on Films as well. Anything else was ordered by personal preference. The Monkees TV series is kept separate from everything else by the Criterions. The order makes sense to me, and I can find everything. |

I organize mine by genre generally and then alphabetical within it. And then if they're historical epics or war films, I try to organize them by real world chronological order (ie. Greek, Roman, Dark/Middle Ages, Renaissance/Industrial Age, American Revolution/Civil War, WWI, WWII, Korean, Vietnam, modern conflicts) I'm a big history nut. Love historical set piece films. I also have one whole area dedicated to Asian cinema. Been buying a lot of those lately. Man those old Chinese Dynasty war era days were some brutal times.
Anyway, I've got one whole shelf dedicated to live-action Superhero films. And I just ran out of room by adding the Blade Trilogy. My big box sets go on their own shelves. Just looks nicer that way. |

except for some special categories
like unwatched: content that I have not watched (or finished watching for box sets or TV series) since I bought them (though I might have seen the content itself before) fancy packaging: on one of the top shelves so that my younger nieces and nephews don't touch them and ruin them. "international": films that were made for a none-anglophone primary market in their native tongue. So French Canadian films are in that category but films like Apocalypto are not since tit is a Hollywood film and everyone will watch it with Subs. The rest are by genre or sub genre. And in each category they are Alphabetical. I go with a simple rule. If a category gets too big for a shelf then I divide it into sub categories. For example romantic comedy and horror comedy have been splintered from comedy, zombie type films from Horror, car centered films from Action ..... I find this way each category is real small 60-70 max and so easy to pinpoint the film I want. PS also series are together in chronological order (so like the guy above Dark knight is a Batman film so it is there after Batman Begins in the B Last edited by Anthony P; 07-14-2012 at 01:32 PM. |
