Sorted alphabetically with DVD, Blu and TV shows separate. As for genres and other sorting methods I just use Delicious Library on Mac and I can quickly decide what I want. With that said, I do have exceptions. For instance franchises are sorted together: Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace or Batman Begins and Dark Knight. I will also sort mixed franchises Alien and Predator or Freddy and Jason with the mishmash title being the bridging film. Finally I always try to organize my titles in chronological order based on story: ex - Xmen First Class will be before Xmen 1. The only exception to that rule is films like Paranormal Activity 3 where despite being a prequel I will put it as the third film.

It only makes sense to everyone in a household this way. My wife couldn't find anything when I had everything organized by studio. Yeah, it's prettier, but it makes no sense to most people.

I have mine in alphabetical order except for sequels. I was thinking about organizing them by their IMDB rating, but decided against that.

I don't have a large enough collection to really worry about organizing it properly, but I do keep Boxsets and Music/Concert BD's separate and apart from my other movies. Those I just alphabetize.
I am a firm believer in not creating too many categories, as that can get confusing as well. I could never see myself organizing my movies by studio for example. Even organizing by genre would be confusing to me as many (if not most) could be placed in more than one genre. Using another example (forgive me for this), but my LP collection which runs into the thousands is only organized in four sections. Boxsets, Classical, Audiophile pressings and everything else in alphabetical by Band/Artist. I'm even thinking of just removing the Audiophile pressings as I'd like my 4 copies of Alan Parsons' I, Robot to be together. Bottom line...for me simplicity works. |

Packaging type trumps everything. All my regular BDs are in alphabetical order with numbers at the front by value (21 comes before 10000) trilogies and series get their own shelf. TV on BD has it own spot although I might mix the few shows I have on BD with my DVD shows as I am running out of room on my BD bookcase. Disney movies get their own shelf (Viva Metal Boxes on one side, Toy Story toy box and then Disney movies which must have slip covers) . Book type releases (007, Alien, Star Wars) have their own partial shelf. I don't have any digibooks yet but I would probably put them here too. Lastly, Steelbooks which are not being displayed on top of the shelf are alphabetical by English title on the last shelf.

I'm sure it's been discussed before, but has anyone ever tried to organize their collection by spine color? I'd definitely run into trouble with certain titles (Dazed and Confused non-criterion release etc.) but I bet it'd look pretty cool. |

I'm trying to arrange them alphabetically, but it's hard because of the big box sets. For example, my Bourne box set will be all the way on the left side of the first shelf since it's "B." But when I remove the box set to watch it, all the BDs on the right of it fall to left side. Very annoying. I think I may rearrange my packaging type.

Criterions by spine number, followed by most everything else alphabetically, followed by animated films alphabetically. If a box set doesn't fit, it gets shifted before or after where it should go until such a time as I have room for it in sequence.
New purchases sometimes sit unsorted for a while until I get around to shifting everything. |

Basically DVDs and BDs on separate shelves and in alphabetical order, with a few exceptions:
Separate sections for: Documentaries, Music, Stand-up comedy etc. 'Special' packaging that won't fit on the shelf (shelves are built for DVD heights) Doctor Who classic DVDs which are in three separate stand alone racks in transmission order Temporarily (space restriction which will not be resolved quickly also means) I have all the CSI on a separate shelf for now, too. Also, not that I like this solution, BDs of some TV series end up 'having' to go in the DVD shelves because I (for example) have seasons 1-3 on DVD and 4 on BD and I want them to stay together. |
