Mine is broken down into groups of 5 or more movies which can be grouped by any common trait. Those common traits are ordered alphabetically. So it goes Animated, Asian, Bond, Drama, Fantasy, Foreign Language, Hitchcock, Horror, Romance, Science Fiction, Silent, Swedish, Sports, Thriller.
I previously had them ordered by production date, but I kind of like having them grouped by common, although sometimes random, traits. |

I just reorganized my collection. From top to bottom:
1) Criterion DVDs 2) Criterion BDs (top shelf. No pun intended) 3) Shout Factory BDs (slipcovers) 4) Shout Factory regular BDs (assorted/random order). Notice how I have the best stuff on the top shelves. 5) Arrow Video BDs (white slipboxes) 6) Arrow DVDs (3) 7) Steelbooks 8) Digibooks 9) Standard BDs Second Shelf 1) Assorted Oversized Box sets and collectibles (top shelf) 2) Smaller Box sets (Alien Quadrilogy, Bridge On the River Kwai, etc) 3) BDs with slipcovers 4) Horror BDs 5) Eurohorror BDs 6) Shout Factory DVDs 7) Horror DVDs Gone With the Wind UCE Blade Runner Briefcase Ben-Hur UCE Planet of the Apes: 40-Year Evolution Lost: The Complete Series - Random placement on different style shelving Everything is random. Got bored with alphabetizing. ![]() Last edited by Cinema84; 10-22-2013 at 03:57 PM. |

The initial sort is based on whether it is Blu or DVD. Since I have replaced 90% of DVD movies with the Blu version that means most of my DVD's are now mainly TV series.
Both types of disc (Blu and DVDs) are then sorted alphabetically with the exception of things like trilogy's that have come out at different times on separate discs eg the recent Batman movies. |

I organize mine alphabetically and then by category, separating them into ordinary BD, SteelBook, DigiBook, Criterion, etc. I display all of the Collector's Edition Box Sets face-forward on separate shelves since it would defeat the entire purpose of collecting it if it wasn't displayed

Just got a new shelf for my birthday last month and finally got around to putting it together this past weekend. Spend my Saturday reorganizing. I've got to take some pictures at some point.
I'm pretty happy with the way I've got it right now... Blu-Ray Steelbooks (Alphabetical order) 3D Blu-Ray (Alphabetical order) Blu-Ray (Alphabetical order, sequels/series kept together regardless) TV on Blu-Ray (Alphabetical order) WWE Blu-Ray Documentaries (Alphabetical order) WWE Pay-Per-View Blu-Ray (Chronological order) Oversized Blu-Ray sets (Alphabetical order - HP UEs, for example) TV on DVD (Alphabetical order) DVD (Alphabetical order) WWE on DVD (Chronological order) Large gift sets are on the top of the shelves wherever they're most aesthetically pleasing. |

First off, I have the DVDs and Blu-rays separated.
My collection is organized similar to what my online collection looks like, but I also have separated the slipcovers from the Seen/Not seen. I do however have an ambitious project to undertake. I would like to add another level, by Director. But not simply organizing them, that part is easy. I'd like to print out a cover for each director that has a picture, biography and filmography. And then put that at the start, and then their filmography in chronological order (Both DVD & Blu-ray). I'd like to get clear DVD case. The problem lies in boxsets, what should I do with the Alien Anthology? All four of those directors would be represented... I'm thinking of just creating/downloading custom covers for these and putting them in an empty case. For those movies not in the Director's Section I'd keep the current organization. It'd be a lot of work to accomplish, but I think it would look fantastic if I ever got around to doing it. |

I built a custom case that stands 8 feet tall and 6 1/2 feet long with ten shelves. This beastly case allows me to organize by genre fairly easily, from top to bottom:
10. Horror (gotta keep em out of reach of children) 9. Stephen king movies and classic monsters (I.e. zombies, vampires etc.) 8. Directors (Kubrick, Scorsese etc.) 7. Action movies 6. Sci-fi 5. Super heroes 4. Disney and animated movies 3. Comedies 2. Comedy-Drama 1. Video games and special edition DVDs that I've upgraded to blu ray already but cant bear to part with I would post a pic of this masterpiece but I keep getting an error message whenever I try to upload it |

I keep my DVDs and Blu Rays separate in the same bookshelves.
I sort first by studio, and then chronologically (based on theatrical release date) within. Sometimes I fudge the chronology to keep franchises together. Sometimes I don't. This looked awesome and worked great for DVDs and in the early days of Blu-ray. But now, with studios farming much of their catalog out to other companies, it's losing quite a bit of its visual appeal. I can still find stuff easily though and it beats having to move everything down one when I buy something like After Earth on a lark. |

By genre, on shelves all around my living room. My boxed sets are in one book shelf. One side of my entertainment center has comic book films, the other side Star Trek, Star Wars and sci-fi. One tower of shelves has Disney. And the other tower has the rest, with Bond, comedies, old films, westerns, musicals and the rest. I have a Harry Potter book shelf and my Blu-rays of those films sit with them.

Alphabetical/chronological. "A" and "The" are considered as part of the title too.
Example - Halloween, Halloween 35th Anniversary, then Rob Zombie's Halloween. Also Texas Chainsaw and Terminator 2 is away from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and The Terminator. The Lord of the Rings movies, for example, bother me though. Fellowship, The Two Tower, Return of the King. Chronological, but not alphabetical.. |

Alphabetically by packaging type.
For example steelbooks, digibooks, box sets and even slipcovers are each separated alphabetically to add uniformity to my shelves. Amaray only blus are at the bottom shelves. ![]() |
