Alphabetical with no An or The

So lets say the movie series is The Planet of the Apes that would go into the P's.

Currently it's DVDs and BDs mixed in for my horror titles in one section and the same setup for everything else. Tried doing theme sections (Criterions together, steelbooks, digibooks, etc), which I actually liked at first but decided to go back to alphabetical. Big boxed sets and TV series are on separate shelves.

Not only that, but how does my wife or daughter find a movie? By studio is nothing but a convoluted mess.

I used to go by director or series. Tried alphabetical but didn't like the look. Now trying by studio which looks pretty good. I can still group together matching spines like Bond movies or Hitchcock Universals, etc. Criterions look nice.

From Left To Right on my shelves:

Woody Allen DVD's (starring and/or directed by) in chronological order

Studio Ghibli DVD's in chronological order

Standard DVD case Anime in alphabetical order

Standard Case DVD's In alphabetical order, sequels follow the first in the series...so Army of Darkness follows evil dead 2 etc etc...some exceptions any Hitchcock films go in chronological order under H, James Bond goes chronological under J and Godzilla goes in Chronological.

Then those cheap warner brothers type dvd cases in alphabetical order

Criterion in numerical order, blu's and dvd's mixed together followed by eclipse box sets in numerical order and essentials in alphabetical

Then Blu's...again Woody Allen followed by Ghibli and anime and then standard blu ray's in alphabetical.

Finally box sets, blu's and dvd's mixed together alphabetically.

Some cons to this is when a tv series changes up its cases like fraggle rock season 4 and Dragnet season 4 going back to snap cases after 3 seasons of Box sets means that the series will be split up on the shelves but in the end I find this way looks a lot cleaner and really maximizes the space on my shelves (three large IKEA billy bookshelves).

I go by genre

Some like comedy or horror for example have multiple book shelves for it. While say western has like one small section.

I have my iPad linked to my DVD collector account. So if I need to find a movie I check my iPad then I know what section it is in.

Steelbooks in Alphabetical order.
Digibooks in Alphabetical order.
Cine-Asia releases in Alphabetical order (sometimes I switch this up and order by catalogue number).
Coen brothers releases in Alphabetical order.
Disney Animated Classics (regardless of case type) in Alphabetical order.
Pixar releases (regardless of case type) in Alphabetical order.
Hitchcock releases (regardless of case type) in Alphabetical order.
Marvel Cinematic Universe in release order (these are all Steelbook).
All other movies A-Z.
TV/Documentary/Music & Wrestling.

Boxsets are on other shelves in no particular order.

By actor...but that gets hard especially in movies like The Expendables where there a few A list actors. I might have to rethink my org lol

I hav many racks but all cartoons & fantasy films together by sets, space movies all together, horror all horror, creature movies all together, comic book hero movies all together, steelbooks all together, earthquake style movies all together.

Actors all together like all Tom Cruise movies, Angie Jolie together and so on. any multi actor movies I go by who ever has the most screen time goes to that actor set of movies, like for The Expendables both are with S. Stallone. Boxsets are altogether.

No movies in alpha order, if two movies come out with the same title like old then a new version they are in order by the year, old one 1st.

I wanted to go alpha route but I remembered I don't live alone I hav like 750-800 dvds on 4 racks they are in some type of order Lol
I hav racks of movies on all 3 floors I try to keep them arranged but you know when you live with others who HATE control & neatness they know I'll see it & fix it

you can't them so i'll put them back, Lol

my laserdisc are in my trunk I used in college and in a couple tote boxes still dust free

any pics 4D?

I'm having to rearrange my collection to make the best use of what room I have left. I don't have that many movies but I do have a small apartment.
I go alphabetically;
DVD

R1 American films
Criterion (American or UK films)
Gift Sets/Special Editions (anything I deem as cool or bigger than normal)
Foreign Films (Including Criterions)
TV
Documentaries
Music

Sports (Don't have any sports DVDs yet)
Imported DVDs (This is a new change to help with space issues and I'll try and list them alphabetically and then alphabetically by country so for example: Bourne China, Bourne Germany, Bourne UK etc)

Blu Ray will pretty much be the same but instead of starting with RA American films, I'm starting with my Gift Sets/Special Editions because of the space issues

Criterion by spine number

Drafthouse by Spine number

"alpha numerical" meaning titles that start with a number but treating the numbers as though they were a letter A=1, B=2. This is confusing and I know I'm not explaining it well, so just for an example 2001 may be a bigger number than 8, but 2001: A Space Odyssey comes before 8 Mile because 2 is smaller than 8.

A-Z.
Series always go together and will be filed under the first films' title, so Dark Knight, for example, is under B for Batman Begins. I have all the Marvel studios films under M in chronological order because I consider it one series but didn't think it would be appropriate to file it under Iron Man. Reboots go into their own letter if the title is different as I don't consider them a part of the same series, example: Amazing Spider-Man is under A instead of with the rest of the Spider-Man films, Man of Steel is under M instead of being grouped with the earlier Superman films, Rise of the Planet of the Apes is R, etc.

Boxsets are just mixed in as normal films, along with digibooks, steelbooks, etc. DVDs are also mixed in with Blu-rays because I care more about the content than the format.

I just put movies with a studio that I haven't had before at the end. The only movie I have that is a "lone studio" is The Ward, Arc Entertainment. Everything else fits fine.

Alphabetical is a convoluted mess Granted I do have everything arranged by studio, then alphabetical.

This site has an app for organizing your Blu-rays by section/genre.

Alphabetically. I also have some mini-crates that contain different collections, like one for all of the Halloween films, a Scorsese section, a Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino section and of course a Schwarzenegger section etc.

I'm going to buy a new shelf from ikea tomorrow

[Show spoiler]

and here's how I'm thinking of organizing my blu-rays

Criterion (at the moment my criterion collection is small but I'll give it an entire shelf for future purchases)
Boxsets
Directors (not every director of course, only my favorites)
Disney/Pixar/Ghibli
and the rest by genre
Comics/Superheroes
Anime
Comedies
,etc..

So I have my new shelves set up and got my TV section done. Put them in alphabetical order and mixed DVD/Blu Ray. That took up half of the section, here is an image:

Now the other side is going to be for my Movies, Music, Sports and Wrestling collection. I am just debating how to organize WWE. Do I separate BluRay/DVD? And I think I will separate documentaries from PPV's and alphabetice the Docs/Others and put the PPV's in Chronological order.

Anyone else have pics to share of their collection?
