Currently, its alphabetical in sections, except for a few series exceptions, like 007 or X-Men, but I even stored Batman Begins and The Dark Knight apart before I was given the trilogy as a gift.
Anyway it goes: 3D, 007, A-Z, TV A-Z, DVDs. I'm thinking of breaking it down into comedy, action, drama, scifi, superheroes (Marvel in particular. Bats and Supe could stay action), TV, and Disney. Scifi could be grouped into action. With a Marvel category, how would you organize them? The new MCU separate in chronological order? What about Spider, X, and the F4? They go in Marvel too. That's my big question. I'm leaning toward Marvel alphabetical. It keeps series together. |

Well, looking the posts from this thread hoping to find answer to organize my collection give me incredible happiness that I'm not only one who find this difficult.
My target was to know what I have owned online or on the phone. I did that using Blu-ray.com and the app. But it's still difficult to know where to find them especially to categorized them by its owner (long story), for trade, and for sell and their location on the rack or in the basement (no interest of watching, duplicate copy or ones for sale or trade). Then the questions is how to categories the main cabinet so that it's easier to find and add. For me, if there's enough space on each shelf, Alphabetical order or by studio seems logical. But if most of my shelves are almost full and there's no space there to add new shelf, adding new ones to the shelf seems difficult and frustrating. Even though, the problem exists with every system. So logically here is what I did in general: First level, by big category (Movies, TV Shows, Concerts, Nature Documentaries) So inside Movies, here is how I group them; 1. Animated Movies - Grouping by Pixar, Japanese Animated Films, Other Disney Titles, Then by studio (paramount, dream works, 21st century, etc), then others; 2. Franchise - Grouping by Big Box Set, Super Hero Related Franchise, Other Franchise; 3. Multiple Feature Set - Like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind & Lost in Translation Double Feature Blu-ray or Se7en / Copycat / Taking Lives Triple Blu-ray, no where to put them except by studio, so I group them together unless the movies are all from one main actor. 4. Big Actor or Actress (I like or recog) - Like George Clooney, Brad Pit, Harrison Ford, Matt Damon, Sandra Bullock etc; If the movie with the actor in it is from a franchise, it'll be in the franchise not here. If the movie have more than one actor or actress categorized, then I'll pick one that for me easily remembered, like Gravity, I put in Sandra Bullock instead of George Clooney. It really does not matter most of the time, they are not that far from each other; 5. Others, generally I use big category, like release year, genre (action, sci-fi, comedy and drama), country and recently watched (I normally put the recently watched blu-rays on the back if they belong to Others category); In a way, this works by finding a movie or adding a movie in term of allocation. They are not strictly in alphabetical order, really it's about space. Adding a new movie is not as challenging as other ways since I can move thing around inside their own big category. Oh, I don't like slipcovers most of the time. They took space. So I remove them before putting on the shelf even though sometimes it's hard when its really good like some of the Disney ones. I don't have any SteelBooks blu-rays as they will stand out from all the other ones. For TV Shows, DVD and Blu-ray are mixed; I would think this is not very complicated. It's really about space and trying the best way works. Though I still need a better way to organize Others category and trying to let go some of the titles to make space. Hope this helps. I USED to have them sorted into genres, but it was so hard to organize due to lots of movies with multiple genres and I never knew where I should put them.
So now, it's quite simple. TV shows first, movies second. Alphabetical order. I only have one DVD in my blu ray collection, and that is Farscape Peacekeeper Wars, because I just had to put it with the seasons 1-4 on blu ray.. I really wish that movie was on blu ray. |

I organize my collection by Horror, then everything else. Lately I've been thinking about starting to organize by my favorite actors as well.

Chronologically by filmmaker. (filmmaker with the oldest debut directing credit all the way to most recent debut directing credit. Currently it starts with Ernst Lubitsch and ends with Jeff Nichols.
Criterion's chronologically by year. Starts with "Pandora's Box" ends with "Frances HA" Drama chronologically by year. Starts with "I Am a Fugitive From a Chain Gang" ends with "Captain Philips" Comedy chronologically by year. Starts with Marx Brothers Box Set, ends with Anchorman 2. Foreign films chronologically by year. Starts with Alan Clarke box set, ends with "The Hunt". (Definitely my weakest sub section). Horror chronologically by year. Starts with "Nosferatu" (1922) ends with "The Conjuring". Sci Fi chronologically by year. Starts with "THX 1138" ends with "The Thing"(2011). (Another lacking section) Documentary/concert chronologically. Starts with "Olympia" ends with "Beware of Mr Baker" Small section for cult dvd's/Blu's I couldn't find a section for. Things such as "The Room" "Road House 2" " "No Holds Barred" as well as some films my friends made. Film Noir/Gangster movie section Franchise/Series section organized chronologically by the first film in the series with the oldest debut to first film in the series with the most recent debut. Starts with Romero's Dead series, ends with Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy. Small Section of actor box sets that I couldn't break up. Actors such as Paul Newman, Bogart/Bacall, James Dean, Steve Mcqueen, Al Pacino. Finally a wrestling section and a TV section. Split up into sub genres that I wont bother posting as I'm sure they only make sense in my head. |

I did mine over a while back. With dvds it was always alphabetical by title and I would break it up so that I had live action, then animation, them misc. But with blurays, I don't have nearly as many so I am grouping them by movie so all my Trek is together, Doctor Who, etc. I then just kind of toss them all on the shelf so there is no real order other than all the related ones are together.

My newer purchases are being organized by where I can find room for them at on the floor. Its sad. I really need a new shelf. But, I am not finding anything that is the same height and style. Nor do I want to replace the one that I have.

I pretty much organize everything alphabetically, no exceptions:
[Show spoiler] I don't have enough shelf space to organize by all these different sub-categories (I'm working on that). The only things I do keep separate are TV shows. |
