How do you organize your collection?

At the moment my blu-rays and hd-dvds are in piles and i need a way to find them easily.

How do you arrange yours e.g genre, alphabetical and why did you choose this?
Also if you have some hd-dvds as well do you mix them or seperate?

i've got my standard dvds separated from my blu's. i then have them organized in alphabetical order.

that way, any movie can be found easily.

I put my franchises/series first (starting with the top, going left to right) then after that, just start alphabetically with single movies. And I print my own custom covers cause I want my franchises to look uniform and nice on my sheelve. Guess I'm just anal like that.

And of course, I seperate my blus from my dvds, with my blus starting at the top.

Currently I have everything split into 3 sections

DVD movies, Blu-ray movies, and TV shows (both Blu and DVD go in the same place)

All are arranged alphabetically and each section is in its own shelving unit

The few exceptions are that franchise movies (James Bond, Indiana Jones, Star Wars, etc) are order chronologically instead of alphabetically. The Clone Wars is also not in with my TV shows, and are instead in between ep 2 and 3.

I have mine alphabetized except for sequels and such. For instance, Dark Knight is right next to Batman Begins even though alphabetically they should be seperated. I also have Serenity right after Firefly since it is a continuation of that story and I feel it would be wrong to have them on opposite ends of my collection.

I download them from various custom cover sites.

Full credit goes to those guys for making it, but once I downloaded them, I kinda made some changes on photoshop to suit my likes and tastes for a cover.

Have mine arranged by studio, then any film series are lumped together. Causes a bit of a problem when different studios handle the releases, but I'm not anal enough to mind the odd studio one out of place.

does it cost you anything?? i know i've been looking @ some custom cover sites and you have to buy memberships or pay "credits" for each cover.

Yes you buy credits and each cover is worth a certain amount of credits. The site's prices are usually pretty good.

The membership itself is usually free....least the ones I'm a member of.

Alphabetical order.

And so far, I've kept the TV shows and anime separate from the rest.

I have my dvd's and blu's together and organize them by genre. I don't always know what I feel like watching, so if I want to watch a comedy they are all together.

My Blus are kept in 3 separate groups: feature films, music (concerts), and special interest/documentaries. Alphabetical within each group.

Each has a number so they are easy to put back in order..

I have a database I made myself with all movies in it and with their own custom category I assign.. that way I can print off different lists organized differently. One list might be alpha order if I am looking for a certain title, another may be sorted by my category then the title name... etc.. when they have a number I can re-order instantly with database and leave all movies alone on shelf.

I don't have any DVDs so my Blu-rays go on their own shelves in alphabetical order with #s first, then my slowly vanishing HD-DVD collection, until they are all sold off

At first I did them in order to how I bought them, then by release company (so that the spines where fairly similar) and now I do them alphabetically.

I have my Blu-rays in alphabetical order, except for series which I put together. The one I'm still unsure about is if I should have First Blood with the F's or the R's since every one in the series after that started with Rambo. I have concert Blu-rays after the movies, then I put my collector's editions and odd-sized cases at the end in alphabetical order, followed by my tv shows on DVD, then my PlayStation 3 games. I don't even bother to put my other DVDs on the shelf because they just clutter things up.

Blu-Rays are the only media that i keep organized; alphabetically (#-Z). Dvd's are a mess. I use big leather cases for my dvd's, and my roomies just leave them out everywhere. Oh well F it, just don't mess w/ the blu's. But can't have the blu-ray's in the leather cases because the sweet blue cases are too cool to hide.
