Oppo isn't a mainstream player (Sony, Panasonic, Samsung, etc). I can see players like them with DV late 2017.

Apparently the MediaTek chipset in the new Oppo will be DV capable, meaning it can be firmware updated to support it, and it's undergoing testing and certification. Question is will it ship that way or be updated to DV sometime in 2017?

Verrrrry interesting! I wonder if Oppo will list it as Dolby Vision ready or not mention it at all.

Apparently it was only mentioned to people as an 'off the cuff' kinda remark as nothing is set in stone, but seeing as some AV commentators went ahead and mentioned it first, now everyone is! Even if it didn't get the DV update (who knows what politics lies ahead in getting it activated?) it'd still be a storming player for the money.

Right, that's it, I'm getting the box for my Panny down off the shelf. That sucker's getting sold pronto!

Lots of HDR and HFR related papers will be presented at the upcoming 2016 SMPTE Annual Technical Conference & Exhibition in October.

I hear ya. Im sending my oppo 103D to amazon tomorrow because i chose the "buy back for a gift card option". It has to pass their inspection to be in near mint condition with original box, and will pay $423 in amazon credit, which is excellent considering I paid $599 2.5 years ago. They are offering $140 for the samsung 4k player, but ill hang onto that 1 until the oppo 203 is offficially out.

"... In my professional opinion, the Dolby Vision ecosystem (i.e. color correction to service master creation) is the most revolutionary solution I've seen in the last 10+ years. Default Dolby Vision / HDR10 gaming platforms

Mass Effect: Andromeda gameplay in Dolby Vision & HDR10 (Dolby Vision on PC)
http://totalgamingnetwork.com/showth...4-Pro-Gameplay

There are 2 main game application architectures:
1. Game uses services through APIs exposed by the Windows / console operating system
2. Game uses services through APIs exposed by the game engine.
The "game engine" can be developed by a 3rd party software house or by a "game software house".

As far as I know, the free cross-platform Amazon Lumberyard game engine is currently
. waiting for the Windows / console OS built-in support of HDR10
. supporting Dolby Vision on Windows: the Dolby Vision SDK has been integrated into the game engine in a few days.
http://www.gdcvault.com/play/1023597/

As dynamic metadata are missing in HDR10, the HDR10 TV’s tone mapping is not properly done.
The proper tone mapping has to be done outside the HDR10 TV: "App does tone mapping".
This proper tone mapping is carried out by the game app according to the collected HDR capabilities of the HDR10 TV.
As there "is quite a bit of work to query HDR capability", the Amazon Lumberyard team waits for the Windows / console OS built-in support of HDR10.

"Dolby Vision, one of the standard for HDR is currently supported on the Windows platform. Lumberyard's Dolby Vision implementation works on legacy cards as well, e.g. NVidia GTX980 or older, PASCAL is not required, same goes for AMD. HDR 10 is the other standard, which Windows and Xbox has announced plans to support through the OS, and other consoles might too. When that occurs, Lumberyard will support it as well.
Before Windows and Console OS has the support, it is quite a bit of work to query HDR capability and switch the display to HDR mode. Some vendor SDKs like Nvidia Gameworks support this query and switching mechanism for some TVs, but since OS built-in support is coming (soon), we don’t currently plan on incorporating the vendor specific HDR into Lumberyard."

https://gamedev.amazon.com/forums/qu...3-release.html

Dolby Vision compatible demo game based on Amazon Lumberyard game engine running on Windows PC > NVidia Titan X graphics card >> HDMI >> Dolby Vision compatible Vizio R TV

https://twitter.com/nvidiageforce/st...40315099340800

So, there are 2 HDR game application architectures:
. game depending on OS built-in support of HDR10 / Dolby Vision
. game not depending on OS built-in support of HDR: HDR10 / Dolby Vision features are integrated into the game / game engine.

In July, I saw a press release about a new theatrical HDR system called EclairColor. It's from a French company, Eclair (Ymagis Group). And today they announced the first film to be mastered in EclairColor, Aquarius. I haven't been able to find any specs. All they say is it's based on ACES and close to DCI spec. Does anyone know anything specific or have seen any more information? Is it based on PQ similar to HDR10?

There is a lot of controversy about which panels are 8 or 10 bit, because, without direct confirmation from a reliable source (the manufacturer for example), there is no way to know for sure. The panel sites only list replacement panels, so even though it says which it is on their site, the actual panel used could be different.

Follow-up from a post made last early August….https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...s#post12596356 (with a P.S. that Sony has also announced their 4K tvs to be updated with a SKY Perfect tuner to be HLG capable).

A reminder to our Japanese membership regarding the 4K HDR (HLG) broadcast launch…..it be on Oct. 4th.

Closer to home, at last month’s (August 2016) ASC Tech Committee meeting (which consists of various subcommittees other than the UHDTV, like for instance the NGCD, there was a demo of PQ to HLG conversion for attendees, as pictured….

Folks think that HLG can successfully (in terms of quality) be used for movie distribution if converted from a greater than 10 bit PQ master, meaning for example, from 16 bit PQ master TIFF files used as the source.

Short film mostly shot on the F65 (recording in the Sony Raw format at 3:1 compression) although with one scene having been acquired with the Red Weapon 6K (recording in Redcode Raw format at 6:1
compression) now being offered online (CCA license like for Tears of Steel back in the day for free (albeit MXF files more common to fellow readers from the professional environment)….http://variety.com/2016/digital/news...ce-1201859416/

By the way, what are the different competing HDR formats for ATSC 3.0?
When is the deadline?
Thanks.

Lots. In a nutshell they involve the PQ and/or the HLG transfer function and in some cases with various additional technologies tacked on…..

BBC/NHK proposal (HLG)
Samsung/Sharp/Qualcomm joint proposal (HDR10)
Technicolor proposal (transfer function agnostic, i.e. supports both HLG and PQ)
Dolby Vision
Qualcomm proposal (pre-processes HDR10 for a claimed improved result)
Ericsson proposal (pre-processes HDR10 for a claimed improved result)

P.S.
If memory serves, the last proposal on the list above ^ also optimizes the HEVC QP chroma offset values.

Not that many proposals at this meeting. I notice that they are still working on a content color volume SEI message though I think the LG proposal from the last HEVC meeting would have been sufficient. The new group proposal is rather complex and they basically just stuck all three of the proposals from the last meeting together into a three part SEI message. It took me a while to figure out that the CCVmode relates to the part that gets used and that the three parts have nothing to do with each other. I have to say that this was a good time for Dolby to jump in since their proposal for content color volume looks good when compared to the group proposal.

Also several companies have made a proposal for a Main 10 still picture profile and for some reason that was rejected back in 2014 but it looks like it has a lot more support this time.
