No one really knows. We're guestimating. To be clear, there has been no formal "announcement" of any kind that all FOX Blu-rays are "Going OOP." The skeptical amongst us are simply operating on cynicism or precautions "just in case," and due to Disney's purchase and overall home video philosophy. And of course some of this current depletion is simply due to COVID-19 upsets across the world.

I'd bet that a number of those titles (Speed, Die Hards, X-Mens, Butch Cassidy, Avatar, Sound of Music) above will stay in print or be re-released in one manner or another on disc by Disney...but my gut feeling is that at least half of them might not ever hit disc again once existing FOX stocks run out...

Never announce your titles, man... it only makes everyone else go hunting!

Some are bound to remain in print in some form. Avatar definitely will, since Disney will want to cross-promote when the sequels come out, and they'd probably use the extended version, if not both. Dark Phoenix might stay, if Disney decided to reissue all of the X-Men films, but that one got slammed, so who knows?

The Sound of Music will likely stick around, and maybe Patton. Doctor Dolittle? Probably not. The new Dolittle film bombed (and it was from a different studio); so there's no promotional value. It'll probably live on through Disney+, being "family friendly", but no further physical releases.

The Great Escape is an MGM film. Fox was just a distributor for the disc, so Disney doesn't own that. And anyway, The Criterion Collection has just released a new and vastly improved edition.

The others in your list...I wouldn't hold my breath. Those are my guesses, anyways.

Most if not any X-Men title is probably safe in the long run, Avatar has new sequels so they're not going to drop that. The one I'd be most worried about is Firefly because we all know how Disney, and even Fox feels about TV on BD... I think TV titles are most likely the first that would go in this theoretical out of print scenario we're all playing out.

I personally have 27 on my to-get Fox list, but 8 of them I haven't even seen yet, so I'd need to get to that first before buying them.

SCREEN ARCHIVES ACQUIRES TWILIGHT TIME BACK CATALOG

May 14, 2020 -- Screen Archives Entertainment has reached an agreement with Twilight Time Movies to purchase the company’s extensive Twilight Time Movies inventory or back catalog, along with reprint rights of limited titles, and its website effective July 1, 2020. The agreement ensures that the Twilight Time label will continue indefinitely, according to the principals.

Screen Archives has served as the primary distribution partner to Twilight Time since its beginning, working with the late Nick Redman and co-founder Brian Jamieson.

Jamieson, a veteran studio executive and filmmaker will continue to provide marketing expertise and support to Screen Archives during the transition.

Screen Archives president Craig Spaulding said, “Having worked with Brian and Nick over the years, we took this step because we have always enjoyed a good relationship with Brian (and Nick). We wanted to keep our relationship going and continue to capitalize on Brian’s years of expertise in the industry.

Screen Archives began in 1976 and has grown into a worldwide distributor of soundtracks, DVDs, and Blu-rays. No further details will be made available until after July 1, 2020.

Edit: Just got an e-mail that says Updated Text. No idea what's different.

What a strategic move to announce everything is OOP, let people gobble up titles, then days later announce reprints are on the way!

I don't think it's reprints in the manner people might be thinking. Twilight Time had said in interviews that they frequently only print half of the run at a time to save on warehousing costs. So their newest releases from mid-to-late 2019 and some of their worst-selling titles are likely still in the first 1500 copies. SAE would then just be buying the necessary contractual rights to print the remaining 1500 copies when necessary.

That's my impression of what it means, anyway.

I still got a few titles I wanted at a KILLER price, so I will not complain. The opposite. The more interesting home video labels we have the better.

Yes, in the Twilight Time thread.

While it may read like Screen Archives is planning to start re-pressing OOP titles will-he-nil-he, they have a huge obstacle in their path: studio contracts.

Twilight Time contracts with a given studio to release a given title. They come to an agreement for the cost of a license for the right to press 3000 copies. If those sell out, that's it. If, as they did with a small number of titles, TT wants to do an "Encore Edition" (essentially just pressing another 3000 copies), they have to go back to the studio, and renegotiate.

So, if SAE wants to press more copies of existing titles, or go back to press for OOP titles, they will have to renegotiate with the studios. Or have Brian Jamieson do it for them. The likelihood of that happening isn't high. For the titles TT licensed from Fox -- now with Disney -- it's low.

As someone in the TT thread said, this is likely just SAE's less-clear version of the same announcement that TT has already made, and doesn't change what we already know.

There are any number of titles that meet one or both of those conditions that aren't available, or aren't available anymore.

I get paid once a month on the 3rd of the month, so unless there is a willing donor, I think I'll be getting whatever is left in the next 2 months.

This is actually good news but I will take it with a grain of salt. It hints that some of the TT catalog will be reprinted and discs made again by Screen Archives and some may go OOP. It doesn't look like the total end of Twilight Time though it will just all be run by Screen Archives and they will make decisions on all titles and future availability.

As for anyone that gobbled up the last of TT discs don't feel silly, the Screen Archives version of TT it remains to be seen but they will probably be selling for $29.99 again.

They revised the press release and sent it out again without the language about reprinting. I posted the revision too.

With that said, I have a feeling they're ultimately going to reprint some of these movies, but removed that from the press release because people might feel sore that they bought a ton of supposedly OOP titles from the recent sale. Just a guess though.

I think the closest to the "truth" about this was neo_reloaded a few posts back.

Quote:

Hence why this reprint part of the annoucement was updated with a revised text for fear that people might misinterpret it (which was the case obviously as we could read complaints on various social medias already).

Plus, on a side note, I don't think there's any chance Disney would renew any previous contracts and let SAE reprint anything without asking tons of money (even more than what Fox asked for in the first place, as a matter of fact).

Anyway, even if I'm misleading on that part, it makes more sense that, what they call "reprint", would only concern the titles for which TT didn't already print the full 3000 copies run yet from the existing signed contracts.

I'm sure that's the truth. Based on past conversations with other labels, the minimum order size is 1000 per title, maybe TT didn't want to sink that much investment for an entire 3000 run right at the beginning. Their later titles have been taking longer and have required several discounts to sell out. It's possible it might not make financial sense to finish out a print run if they're struggling to sell the first 1500 without that heavy discounting. That could mean we'd actually have less copies than initially thought of for some of these films.
