Normally they don't get this cheap but Arrow wants us to blow out the remaining stock. Once we sell out, these will be gone so even in you are on the fence about any of these titles, it's probably worth picking up (even if it's to stock them in your closet for a few years and resell them at a later date after they are long out of print), cause in a few weeks they will be "gone".

Hope this answers your question.

In the context of this thread what does out-of-print mean? Does it mean that a certain title is not available anywhere to purchase? Or does it mean that it's no longer currently being produced.? But in my mind discs are never in continuous production like a factory producing automobiles. Don't they just make a certain number of disks and release them to retailers?

It means the rights holder of a specific Blu-ray release of a film title is no longer having discs printed. Some releases will be printed/pressed many times before going out of print, generally with little to no variation between pressings; some will only be pressed once. How that happens depends on a variety of factors, including contractual obligations or slow sales, etc. "Out of print" basically means a release will go out of general circulation and will then only be available through secondary markets (Amazon Marketplace, eBay, etc).

Looking at the release date for Arrow's Ronin, it was released August 29, 2017, which is close to three years ago. So it's possible Arrow only had a license for three years and that's why their version is going out of print, but I'm just guessing.

In any case, three years is a reasonable amount of time for a release to be in print, available basically everywhere and then go out of print. Plenty of time for it to appear in a few sales and allow everyone who wants a copy to grab it.

These days, if I find a limited or even semi-limited release I want, I just buy it as long as it's not absurdly expensive.

Every time I see this thread pop up my heart sinks a bit. Plus it seems like it's happening at a greater rate these days. Just frustrating.

Usually 10 years or maybe even a little less would be more reasonable for any release to go OOP than only 3 years unless they say it's limited but like you said with Ronin it could be licensing. I only ask if Arrow releases are more limited because the only Arrow release I recently purchased is Django and now Ronin because of the great price. I know Django is another story with releasing problems.

While lots of titles are going OOP lately, lots of the thread pop-ups are pure speculation of things that are just OOS at the moment due to the plague.

It's been hit or miss for me. There have been a few "oh ****, I missed that one", but many more, "sweet already got it", popping of late. Always nice to see the vale of my collection go up, not that I'll sell many if any, but it might help me son down the road.

I think a good example of how this thread works is the Cohen Media Group. Cohen never lost the license on its movies, but for a while, the pressings they had done were selling out and not being re-pressed. Technically, the titles were "out of print" the moment the pressing completed, but they got gradually listed as the stock sold off and the titles became unavailable (except through used markets). Once a title hit that status, it got listed on the front page as "out of print". Then, all in on go, Cohen did a new pressing of everything they had (I imagine it made more financial sense to do them all together rather than piecemeal as needed), and so they were removed from the front page.

When consumers (and some industry people too) use the term OOP, they usually mean that a pressing sold out and will not be reprinted (this is how Criterion uses the term).

An important distinction is that the major studios almost never operate this way (pre-pandemic). They anticipate runs selling out in advance and press more well before retailers run out of stock.

Even Warner Archive, with their small batch pressings, operates this way. When they first released Out of the Past, they incompetently underestimated the demand, and I believe they ran out of stock for a relatively short period of time. Then they pressed more and I believe it's been in stock ever since (rumor had it that they did 3 pressings in the first few months). Since then, I'm not aware of any WAC BD being unavailable between pressings.

Criterion titles have been unavailable for periods between pressings many times. But they always continue to list the titles as being in-print on their site (they've sometimes referred people to Amazon). People here might've questioned whether a particular title's gone OOP a bunch of times, but I don't think members here have ever gone so far as to say that a Criterion title is definitively OOP and should be added to the OP list.

So comparing boutique label and studios' procedures isn't all that helpful.

For Criterion titles, it's critical to check their website. If one of their titles is OOP, the page for that title will explicitly say "Out of Print". If it says "Currently Unavailable", that's code for "We're out of stock and are in the process of getting more copies pressed". Even more to the point, if the DVD edition is still available, then the Blu-ray -- even if "unavailable" -- is still in print. The only reason Criterion titles would go OOP is if they lose the rights to the title, and if that happens, it would apply to both the BD and DVD editions.

Twilight Time releases were three-year windows.

Dolls was one of the MGMs from Shout! that went out of print last year and that was 5 years. Meanwhile, Road House was 2016 and went out of print this year. Seems like it varies but is probably not 10 years. Entirely possible that they were all a base of 3 years and then extended by single years while the title was still selling for the company that licensed it.

I guess it does depend on who's producing them. If it was straight from major studios it would go for longer in prints not including Disney .

Now I desperately need one... living in France, the task won't be easy... especially since I'd prefer to find it new & sealed

I was trying the find a couple John Wayne movies I don't have, The Undefeated & North to Alaska on the cheap, but they are nowhere to be found anywhere. Imagine these are OOP now being Fox titles.
