I'm sure it's rights issues and contract lengths on a title by title basis. I mean some Scream titles like Assault on Prescient 13 are still in print and that was first released 6 years ago (2013), They Live was issued 7 years back (2012) and still available. Only Swamp Thing and Incredible Melting Man are older than those from the list, and those only by a couple months. Most of the rest are 2015 releases.
Sales could be playing a factor as well, although I would think Swamp Thing would be a consistent, yet slow seller, worth keeping in stock. |

It could be possible that MGM's US rights to Swamp Thing (inherited from the Nelson/Embassy Video catalog Orion had acquired) are expiring and reverting back to StudioCanal (who controls most rights to the Embassy Pictures catalog with the exception of titles MGM had leased to them from the Nelson ownership). Ironically, Swamp Thing was released by United Artists outside of the US and is fully controlled by MGM in those territories, hence how 88's release will likely remain in print and have the uncut version (whereas the US SF release is based on the slightly cut PG version, despite also using the same MGM elements with StudioCanal's logo attached).
If MGM's rights to the Embassy titles are indeed expiring, then that could mean others such as The Fog, The Howling, ESNY, as well as The Producers (which Kino is rumored to have as an MGM title) would be on the verge of going OOP. However, since Shout also has a deal with StudioCanal, they might also try to renew them and/or reissue them with remastered transfers, provided they weren't assigned to package deals that other labels have with SC. |

Most people I know won't even touch Blu-Ray. They are DVD only even if they have a 1080 tv. Hell most of them own game consoles that support Blu-Ray and they still refuse to budge. I read one story on another forum site where this guy updated his father to a 1080p tv and Blu-Ray player and the guy threw a fit demanding to go back to DVD and composite cables because he said the image quality was to clear and he didn't like that. DVD is here to stay, Blu-Ray and 4K UltraHD is likely to eventually die first. Sucks but that's what the majority of the masses want. |

"The Final Terror" is "sold out" on Shout's website, fwiw. It's still available pretty much everywhere tho.

I'm thinking Shout might just be waiting for more copies of The Final Terror, Scarecrows and Windows to be pressed? Could that be why they're listed as "sold out" but not listed as "not available" and grayed out?

i didn't see "Sleepaway Camp II" mentioned yet -- Shout's site says "Product Note: As of October 11, 2019, this title is OUT OF PRINT."

This really sucks. I am a huge horror lover but man I can't afford to keep up with all these Blu-Rays going out of print daily now and it's only going to get a lot worse from here on out.

On the plus side because they’re going OOP you should have no trouble at least getting back what you paid selling them if you end up not liking them.

But if the film were popular enough & still selling Shout wouldn’t let them go OOP. I think like the Kino ones these are the slow sellers they’re letting go.

Up thru the week ending June 15, 2019, blu-ray (including 4K) had a 46.9% share of disc revenue. See top line of the chart under "BD share." https://forum.blu-ray.com/showpost.p...postcount=1162 Year ending 2018, blu-ray and 4K had a 45.3% share. What is interesting to note is that in 2018, there were 2,711 titles released on blu-ray (and 4K combined), which was just 21.6% of all titles released on disc, yet those 2,711 blu-ray titles were 45.3% of total disc revenue for 2018. Year ending 2017, blu-ray and 4K had a 40.1% share. Year ending 2016, blu-ray and 4K had a 37.1% share. The trend shows that blu-ray's share is steadily growing. https://forum.blu-ray.com/showpost.p...postcount=1042 Also, when you look at the top five sellers on disc each week, most of these were purchased on blu-ray and 4K. The latest such figures show that 4 of the top 5 sellers on disc were mostly purchased on blu-ray and 4K: https://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=25821 The three weeks before that showed all 5 of the top 5 sellers were mostly purchased on blu-ray and 4K by a wide margin. https://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=25786 https://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=25752 https://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=25714 Last edited by Vilya; 10-13-2019 at 01:57 AM. |
