The film industry has a history of self censorship as old as the industry itself.

And because this isn’t government it isn’t a first amendment issue either as has been correctly pointed out.

Tried to play my Gone With The Wind yesterday (not given it a spin since around 2017) and it won’t play properly 🤬 jumping and stuttering every few minutes ☹️
On this subject how does Birth Of A Nation stand? I did get a copy a few weeks back as I didn’t have it and wanted it in my collection.

Is there a thread on "non-pc" films where we could compile a list? If not, could someone maybe start one? I am not joking.... this could be of great use to many of us these days to determine what we may need to get now, rather than later....

How do you define what’s offensive and what isn’t? It’s so arbitrary, trying to make a thread like that would have 1000s of titles.

Good luck making that list. I wouldn’t touch it with a 50 ft. cattle prod.

Yeah, I was only half joking about my anything made before 2020 comment. The bar is constantly being raised as to what is acceptable. Even stuff made a few years ago can be deemed offensive to some groups now.

He possibly means titles such as Gone With The Wind or the aforementioned Blazing Saddles that could possibly have issues in the current climate. But yeah it would be a nigh on impossible feat to list every movie that someone somewhere may find offensive.

That's why I picked this up recently, too...

Re: BLAZING SADDLES: The indication seems to be that HBOMAX *also* pulled this title the day they were supposed to begin broadcasting it, July 1st (at least one person claimed it was on HBOMAX for some of the day). Also heavily discussed as coming to HBOMax, but pulled in June, seem to be... 1959's BEN-HUR, as well as possibly the 1936 all-black Bible drama THE GREEN PASTURES.

Were these just abrupt licensing changes, or??? I tried spark a few questions on social media, but perhaps a wider swath of people simply haven't noticed, yet...

That's the ongoing challenge. Even if we think we're at the peak of political correctness, we're not.

Every book, movie or TV show made to the highest scrutiny of PC authority in July 2020 will have elements that will be deemed completely inappropriate 20 years from now...or even 20 minutes from now.

Hopefully we can advance as a society to the point where these things truly are "in the past." For example, there are anti-Italian, anti-Irish, etc. jokes in a lot of older movies, and no one cares because Italians and Irish aren't oppressed or stigmatized these days the way they were at certain points in our country's history. If the wound heals, we can look back more dispassionately. When the wound is still open, the subject still remains touchy. It's not like the list of touchy subjects is forever accumulating - things are added and removed based on our socio-economic environment and people's awareness of it.

Indeed. For example, I consider Shrek to be highly offensive (I'm not kidding). Do I think it should "disappear"? No. I've always believed that if you don't like something, don't watch it.

I've gotta say: I'm curious. Why do you find it offensive?

The movie has a wonderful message about acceptance, and then whizzes it down its leg.
[Show spoiler]Shrek is an ogre; Fiona isn't. But there's an undeniable connection between them. They love each other, regardless of their physical appearances. A great message for any movie, especially one that a lot of children have seen. And then, at the last minute, it's revealed that Fiona is also an ogre. The entire "loving someone even if they are different from you" message goes down the drain. Now the message becomes, "love works when the other person is just like you".
That disgusts me. Why even begin with that message if you're just going to abandon it?

Ok, so I’ll pencil in Shrek between Gone with the Wind and Soul Man. (I am kidding, Who the **** uses pencils?)

While I agree that
[Show spoiler]it does complicate (at best) or ruin (at worst) that thematic message, it functions primarily as one last parody of fairy tales, inverting the way the "ugly" one is made beautiful at the end of the story (e.g., Beauty and the Beast).

Parts of it are very clever. It's just too bad they couldn't fully commit to the message. Nevertheless, many people like/watch the movie and I would never take that away from them.

But can an ogre and a human even have kids? Or, for that matter, a donkey and a dragon?
