That's pretty clever!

The only issue is in the case of some titles getting released for super limited times and then going OOP because of rights issues, but that's not very common I suppose.

Criterion titles are pretty safe. Out of roughly 800 Blu releases, only 10 are currently OOP (not counting Chungking Express and La Dolce Vita because they're still available on box sets). Works out to about a 1.25% chance of a title staying OOP. If it wasn't for the four Paramount-licensed movies just going OOP a few months ago, it'd be 0.75%.

What's pretty amazing about Criterion is that they don't put any title OOP unless the rights holder takes away the license, and if they lose the rights, they do what they claim and sincerely try to get the films back. They even got the rights back to un-Criterion-ly movies from the laserdisc era like The Big Chill. It's almost fanatical.

Another great thing about Criterion is that their SRP never changes and label-wide sales are held regularly, so if you're a fan of their releases, you can just pick up the titles you want the most two, three, four times a year.

I am counting 12 that are out of print that I can think of. There's more if I forgot any:

Leon Morin, Priest
The Third Man
Le Cercle Rouge
The Man Who Fell to Earth
Last Year at Marienbad
The Confession
Days of Heaven
Rosemary's Baby
Harold and Maude
Don't Look Now
Howard's End
Nashville

Re-released:
Army of Shadows
Chungking Express (box set only)
Playtime (box set only)
La Dolce Vita (box set only)

You've listed all of them.

Got ahead of myself: thought Le Cercle Rouge was rereleased already! But it's only a matter of time.

Misremembered: thought there were 5 OOP Paramount titles instead of 6. How could I forget Rosemary's Baby?

Basic point's still the same. 1.5% chance of a title staying OOP.

There have been many Criterion titles thought to be OOP, due to the stock issues they have when retiring the Blu-ray/DVD combos and reissuing them as Blu-ray only, usually in thinner packaging. These include Thief, Salo, Persona, Scanners, etc....

I can't wait until they reissue The New World, and especially Y Tu Mama Tambien as the digipacks are way too thick on my rack and could use the extra space lol.

The MGM titles with Shout are just as fubar as anything. I'm glad I bought what I did when I did (during last year's "going out of print" sale on their site). Then about half the ones I bought just came back in print with no warning or reasoning. Of course others have stayed gone so I'm batting .500 or so on the sale, with a slugging percentage (secondary market value vs. what I paid) that would make me a Hall-of-Famer!

For instance, Rolling Thunder and Crimewave came back. I could get em now for a couple bucks less than I paid then. Species 2 didn't come back and is now one of the most valuable discs I own. So glad I pulled the trigger on that the 3/4 set (up a little bit, but nowhere near what 2 is doing). I almost didn't and waited and waited until the last second since I had the dvds.

I got Monkey Shines, The Dark Half, Crawlspace, and The Beast Within. Those have remained pretty valuable, but I also got Candyman 2 and Rolling Thunder, they are both now cheaper.

I don't think Shout was lying, I just think the remaining stock was greater than the remaining demand, even after OOP-panic set in. Some storefronts may have initially sold out, but there was clearly still stock out there in the distribution chain, and some of those webstores were eventually replenished from that existing stock.

A lot of WB stuff from this couple of years (2013-2015) has been consistently out of stock lots of places. It might be OOP.

Seems like Grindhouse Releasing titles are going OOP. Even seeing that they are either out of stock or running out of stock on all their titles on their website. Some like Cannibal Holocaust are out of stock while some like The Beyond and Pieces have very low stock.

I went with this idea, and glad I did. Found out that some titles were released in 2007!?!? So I have folders from 2007-2021. There were only 3-4 in 2007 & 2008, but some good movies I kept putting off like, Pale Rider, Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid, Adventures of Robin Hood & Steve McQueen's The Getaway. I'm sure I'll go out of order sometimes when something special comes along, but hopefully this will help me to avoid some oop prices.

Most likely in-between printings. I remember Pieces sold out a couple of years ago, I panicked & thought it was OOP, so I bought it on eBay. Eventually Grindhouse Releasing restock the title. Same with The Beyond.

The Swimmer is limited print though and I think there’s one more title as well (Corruption?)

Some of the OOP Scream Factory releases are still available in other regions like The Dark Half and Swamp Thing. The Scream Factory release of the latter has better extras, but the 88 Films release has the international cut. In the case of The Beast Within and The Horror Show, the Region B releases are superior due to having more extras on the former and being uncut on the latter.

I can play Region B discs, so it's no problem. That's how I picked up Pit and the Pendulum before the first Vincent Price set went back into print. I picked up The Nest and Species II a few months before going OOP. Those I don't think have been available in any other region, which is probably why they are more pricey and some of the other OOP titles.

Yeah I thought Cat in the Brain had gone OOP last year and panic bought it. They were just in between pressings. Not to worry.

At this point, hasn't "The Swimmer" been reprinted multiple times with "limited" pressings? I mean, I'm not sorry I ordered the movie, but it does seem like the panic of it going oop was very premature.

Ahh The Nest. What good grimy fun that is. Last time I looked at that one online, it did appear OOP but was still selling for around $10-15 at most retailers. Was wondering if everybody but me just hated it. Nice to see some demand for it finally. Maybe I should've held onto the old dvd a bit longer, but that $3 at the used store hit the spot at the time I sold it.

I believe Bowfinger is still OOP, but it appears around 30 copies total among 3rd party sellers are available on Amazon and ebay for around $10. Get them while they are available if you are looking for a copy. It is in-stock at Deep Discount as well (with 10% coupon).

Dumb move on Universal's part to put this OOP. It has Eddie Murphy and Steve Martin in it along with Heather Graham and Robert Downey Jr. in a small scene. Plus it's a really good movie. I don't get studios decisions sometimes.
