Yah I noticed last night that a decent amount of in-print blu-rays also said "Backordered" on Best Buy, and they all gave the same "get it by July 12th" date. So it was hard to tell if it meant much of anything.

A lot of the time, boutique labels can renew the licenses and choose not to, so it amounts to the same thing. Criterion's has had some Hollywood movies in their catalog for 20 years. Kino said they didn't lose the rights to any of the 200+ titles in the original "While Supplies Last" sale except one, Pauline at the Beach. Also, many of the best-known titles in the Kino catalog are public domain silent films like the Buster Keatons, Nosferatu, Battleship Potemkin and Metropolis. Cohen, Flicker Alley, MoC and BFI have put out major silents too. So no issue with rights or windows there either.

My point is that since boutique labels often voluntarily decide not to renew licenses and press more runs, it's roughly the same situation as the studio's decision not to press more runs, just on a smaller financial scale.

However one may want to phrase it, when we say "go OOP" or "put OOP" a majority of the time that means "allowed to go OOP." Names and phrases aren't always 100% accurate -- head cheese isn't actually cheese! -- but these are the phrases that the home video industry and the book industry have used for a long time.

Good points there but I get what your saying and from what I gather.

Basically boutique labels have the option to renew the license to distribute the movie and if they don't it goes OOP and they no longer have distribution rights till they renew the license if the studio agrees to it.

The studios that own the movies can let a title go OOP if they so choose. They can also put a title back in print if they so choose as well. They also can license a movie out to a boutique label that inquires about the titles availability. It still remains with the studio but the boutique label has a license to distribute the film that has to be renewed.

Studios that own the film though call all the shots and if a title goes OOP it's because they don't feel like making more.

Most of the time though sales figures have alot to do with why studios let a title go OOP and why they also choose titles for market they see a demand.

A couple of Criterion titles -- The 39 Steps and The Lady Vanishes -- have been continously in print from them on various formats (BD, DVD, LD, even VHS!), for 36 years. Well, technically, the VHS editions were from The Voyager Company (their "business daddy" at the time), but still...

While the Kino silents you name are indeed in the Public Domain, Kino was sourcing many of them -- the Keatons, most notably -- from copies in the Rohauer Collection. When Cohen bought that Collection, Kino lost the use of them once their licenses ran out. They could've continued to release the titles using lesser-quality sources, but what would be the point? It seems ironic that Kino is now acting as distributor for Cohen.

Sites saying "backordered" is why it's so hard to tell what is and isn't OOP. I've seen em say "backordered" for stuff that will never come back, and the same for stuff that is just currently OOS.

Yeah, "Backordered" to me signals "Pretty tough to get at this point." I don't trust it.

Many stores like to use "back-ordered" to give you a sense of hope and allows them to hold your money a little longer.

I hate when people say that. 99% of the time, including this case, the person had no idea. Especially the "That's all I'm going to say" part. As I've grown older I've learned that all that translates to is "Trust me, I have no idea what I'm talking about, but I want to look cool". At least he apologized in a later post, and hopefully learned a lesson.

So should Coraline, Paranorman, The Boxtrolls and Kubo and the Two Strings have been added before?

Now they have new versions announced but they did go out of print, which is what this list was for right?

ha yeah. I don't know why those releases weren't added to the list. Some if not all of the previous editions of those movies have been out of print for a while now.

Granted they are now 12 and 9 years old (how time flies) but obviously that's very recent and they were high profile Universal releases.

Now being re-released by Shout Factory soon, but still interesting to note how nobody knew. I wonder how many copies of something like Coraline were printed and when it eventually sold out.
I did allude to this last January, saying they had no distributors for their older films, essentially meaning they were OOP. But titles here usually get added to the list when they're mentioned, so no one (including myself) stated that here. It probably happens a lot, and not realized until a re-release happens (like in this case).

The back of the artwork just says Big Machine Records.

I doubt it will ever get re-released. Taylor had a big feud with Big Machine because they sold her master recordings to a scummy music producer who hates Taylor.

Like some other Universal releases that have been going OOP, I've noticed Sneakers is in a similar situation and not available anywhere. Shame too, unlike Bowfinger, I never got around to picking this one up and recently wanted to revisit it.

surprising they would let Sneakers go OOP
was kinda well known when it came out, had planned to revisit too

but at least there still seem to be overseas versions still available and a new edition coming out in the UK very soon

Oof, that shipping is brutal. Had to pull the trigger though. Didn’t want to miss out and have to pay scalper prices later. Thanks for the heads up!

Hope you guys get your "Sneakers" from Oldies, but FYI, their dwindling 'inventory counts' on OOP titles are usually wrong and they actually have O.
