It's interesting to see how the consumer public reacts to pricing structures of media.

Audio record and tape prices in the mid-late '80s were $6.99-$8.99 for a new release whereas the same CD was $12.99-$16.99.

The public didn't seem to mind paying close to twice as much for the CD and very quickly most records and tapes disappeared from the retail shelves by 1989/1990.

The larger buying public just wasn't willing to pay extra for Blu-ray and are even more resistant to 4K.

Of course a lot of this has to do with more affordable choices like downloading, streaming and endless amounts of dirt-cheap second-hand discs floating around.

Splash (Daryl Hannah) was referenced because the studio edited the streamed edition I believe after first release to hide her tush, where as if you bought a disc it was bare. I though that this was quite well known, if not no big deal. Basicly if you buy a disc and the studio mess up to the consumer advantage, their hard luck.

Or Amazon at the time removed bought copies of 1984 and Animal Farm from kindle devices. Try doing that with physical copies

the risk with 'and endless amounts of dirt-cheap second-hand discs floating around.' is that the one you buy could be damaged and not play properly. Cex-webuy near me are like that

I'm well aware of the Splash situation, and is one of the reasons I can't stand Disney+. My statement was just a joke and not meant to be taken literally.

Universal's Blu-ray of Mystery Men should be removed from this list, as Amazon, DeepDiscount, and Walmart all have it in stock again. Also, the original 4K UHD of Forrest Gump from 2018 should be added since Paramount reissued it a year later with a remastered Blu-ray.

Just because a few retailers have the product in stock doesn't mean it is not OOP. As discussed in this thread, it is often just remaining stock they are trying to clear. Also, Kino announced their upcoming release of this, which means it is more than likely the Universal is indeed OOP.

Goofnut can make the call on Forrest Gump, but I don't think a title is considered OOP when the same studio reissues a better quality version.

... therefore, both of them should be removed from the list

But then again, it depends if the thread consists in listing OOP editions or just the "movies".

Not taking a side in the "Is Mystery Men OOP or not" debate, but Universal's kept several titles in print after Criterion released editions, so another label putting out a Universal movie isn't proof positive that the Universal version's OOP.

I wonder if they deleted some scenes too. When the controversy brewed all the talk was about added CGI weird fake looking hair extensions for the one scene where she jumped into the sea. There are other scenes that show more than that distant scene did but were never mentioned when that story came out, maybe because they were simply deleted and so no weird CGI to catch someone's attention??

The Shadow, People Under the Stairs, Psycho II-IV, and the Darkman trilogy are also instances of Universal making, keeping in print, and/or releasing blu rays of film still in print by Shout Factory.

I watched Teenagers From Outer Space last night and it is THRASHED. In some parts it looks like someone dropped the film on their drive way and accidentally stepped on it. No clean up done whatsoever as far as debris, scratches and reel markers go. It does look like they sharpened the image a little with DNR and it sounds ok. I still enjoyed the film and knew what I was getting with Retromedia as their blu of The Ape was atrocious (fortunately I was able to get rid of it after Kino's release). I don't have the dvd to compare it to. If you decide to get it, keep your expectations in check. As for me, I grew up in the 60's watching movies on a little black and white Tv with rabbit ears, trying to make out the picture through static, so I can handle a blu like this if it is the only way to see the film....

Probably to emphasize how weird it is that people today consider $20 for a blu ray "expensive"

In 1984 I bought my first pre-recorded used VHS tape of "Raiders of the Lost Ark" for $30 and thought I got an amazing deal!

Its not just movies. We're buying a lot more crap today on a daily basis than we were in 1984 and we have gotten so used to this consumption lifestyle that we're looking for low prices on everything, which makes the $20 price tag appear expensive.

My only quibble with your theory is that I'm not so sure you don't have cause and effect backwards. It's possible that people are buying more shit because prices have gone down on many things (thanks to amazon, ebay, and other online marketplaces); they're paying less for things than they used to, and they need to find other outlets for those dollars.

In any case, there are multiple reasons why people might be scandalized by a $20 blu ray/dvd.

The main one, perhaps, is that it's just become so much easier to get dvds and blu rays for cheap. No, maybe not the most popular stuff (Marvel, Star Wars, Disney, etc.), or the boutique stuff (Criterion, Arrow, Shout, etc.), but for most mainstream releases, sales and price drops are everywhere.

Another reason is that the DVD and blu ray markets are circling the drain, and people know it. So paying $20 for what many consider to be a dying format seems too much. (I'd add to this one the steady diminishing of dvd/blu ray extras; it seems like fewer regular releases have much in the way of any substantial extras, meaning you're paying that $20 for the movie and little else.)

It's also the growing popularity of streaming services; people don't understand why anyone would pay more than a month's subscription cost for a single movie.

It's also that so many people, especially younger ones, had gotten so used to the last 15+ years or so of just being able to steal everything online that the concept of having to pay anything at all for movies or whatever is bad enough for them.

As a kid, I remember that most pre-recorded VHS tapes of movies were about $100, because they were priced for purchase by video rental stores.

The idea of pricing films around $20 or $30 to sell directly to consumers didn't come around until the 1990s, and even then it was only for certain MASSIVE titles that they knew would do well. I feel like T2 might have been the first, though I could be wrong.

Even into the mid-90s, I remember either waiting until my local video store sold off most of their stock of VHS tapes for $10 or $20 after a few months, when demand vanished, or later joining Columbia House, simply because it had new releases at reasonable rates as soon as they came out.

When you could get movies the day they came out on DVD for $20 or $30, it was AMAZING.

Thanks for the info and the perspective. I, too, grew up like that in the '60s, so I understand your point. I already have an okay copy of Teenagers from Outer Space in a DVD collection. It doesn't sound like The Giant Leeches is any better than the free download on archive.org. So I don't think the double-feature Blu-ray will be worth the price.

Thanks for the help,
Rick

Agreed. I would not be surprised at all if your Dvd looks better.....
