Seems like using a legitimate service like that to launch the attack would make it almost impossible to track down who did it. I wonder if that is a setback in the investigation or just typically the way they operate anyway (so it was expected).

That's not PSN specifically (it can't be since PSN servers are inaccessible to everyone without a pass key), but Sony's general online presence. I think you could go onto any website bar Google and find general security holes. Even so it is some cause for concern given how Sony are being specifically targeted. I would say sonystyle.com is the biggest priority, but otherwise there will be very little user information to gain from hacking Sony's general websites.
