Guess you all saw this, the hacker that cracked the PS3 and the iPhone speaks out.

PS3 Hacker GeoHot Calls Sony Executives Crazy, Arrogant
by McKinley Noble April 29, 2011 15:25 PM PT
Infamous hardware hacker George Francis Hotz, a.k.a. GeoHot, gives his thoughts on Sony's role in the ongoing PSN crisis and outlines why personal data was at risk in this case rather than other system hacks.

George Francis Hotz, commonly known as GeoHot, the hacker most widely recognized for cracking the Apple iPhone and Sony's PlayStation 3 -- the latter activity invoking Sony's legal wrath -- recently posted his own thoughts about the PSN crisis at his online blog.

Claiming no responsibility for the current incident, Hotz instead established his formal position on the PSN attack, insinuating that the hackers responsible make the modding community at large look bad. Hotz also took Sony's executives to task, stating that the engineers within the company were not at fault. Instead, Hotz implied that Sony's higher-ups provoked the hacking/modding community with arrogant attitudes and poor technical practices.

"Now until more information is revealed on the technicals, I can only speculate, but I bet Sony's arrogance and misunderstanding of ownership put them in this position. Sony execs probably haughtily chuckled at the idea of threat modeling.

Sony needs to accept that they no longer own and control the PS3 when they sell it to you. Notice it's only PSN that gave away all your personal data, not Xbox Live when the 360 was hacked, not iTunes when the iPhone was jailbroken, and not GMail when Android was rooted. Because other companies aren't crazy."

Hotz concluded with a brief explanation of what he personally believes it means to be a hacker, the ethics involved in the practice, and issued a warning to the responsible party: "Don't be a [expletive] and sell people's information."

Yup that's what you get if you play Live. Not saying PSN doesn't suffer from those kinds of gamers coz it has it's fair share but at least they aren't in every room. What's that standing in the corner of the room on the second vid?

Here is the actual article

http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news...yeing-the-Exit

One-Fifth of PS3 Owners Are Eyeing the Exit
Andy Chalk | 28 Apr 2011 2:59 pm

A new survey has found that one-fifth of PlayStation 3 owners in the U.S. are considering a switch to the Xbox 360 in the wake of the Great PlayStation Network Security Breach.

Someday, the news will stop being bad for Sony. That day is not today, however. This probably won't come as much of a surprise to anyone with even a passing familiarity with the still-ongoing PSN train wreck but it turns out that a significant number of PS3 owners are giving thought to crossing the aisle to sit with the other side.

Commissioned by CouponCodes4U "in order to assess gamer attitudes towards the affair," the survey encompassed 2132 people across the U.S., finding that 41 percent of them own PlayStation 3 consoles. 89 percent of those PS3 owners said they were concerned that their personal data may have been stolen in the breach; 65 percent said their trust in Sony and PSN had been "greatly affected"; and 21 percent claimed they were considering selling their PS3 units and switching to Microsoft's Xbox 360.

"As a video gamer myself, this data theft is especially worrying and I'm not altogether surprised that Sony are likely to see an exodus to console competitors," said CouponCodes4U Chairman Mark Pearson. "As hackers get more and more intelligent, companies simply have to keep up. Sony has a responsibility to its millions of customers to protect personal details and this data theft proves that they weren't capable of doing so. It's clear that gamers across the country have decided that this failing is enough to switch their allegiances to the console's closest rival."

Sony recently said that the credit card information on the PSN was in fact encrypted, but the inevitable lawsuits have already begun to fly and financial analysts say the mess could end up costing Sony as much as $24.5 billion to clean up
Ya, like you said, not scientific :P ... just FUD .. there are lots of things to consider, like the type of person likely to look up this kind of quiz and/or respond to it :P .. plus im sure lots of people would speak in the moment angry and will feel very different once the PSN is back up :P Its just nowhere near an objective poll :P

I thought the attention-***** was saying something new, but I realized slick's info had been posted earlier yesterday. Wants to call Sony's people arrogant, but doesn't look in the mirror to call himself the same. Bad enough that he got slapped on the wrist with the lawsuit, but now he thinks he can go and make official statements about what a company should do with its security system.

Yeah, if he had bothered to tell Sony about the rootkeys before he went and gave it to the masses, claiming "no responsibility" as he puts it then I'd take him seriously. But as it is, he is what he is in my view: an attention-*****.

Looks like a press conf tonight from Kaz Hirai on this issue...

http://www.strategyinformer.com/news...rence-tomorrow

[Show spoiler]Kaz Hirai will be holding a press conference tomorrow from Sony Japan, to address the PlayStation Network hacking crisis.

The conference will be held at 2PM Japan time, which means a lovely 12 midnight time for those in New York and 5AM the next day for those in London.

It is expected that Hirai will announce a new PlayStation Network security system, and when PSN will be live for users to enjoy. He also may announce what sort of compensation Sony will offer.

Sony never should have cut him a deal. I hope they prosecute whomever responsible to the fullest extent allowed by law.

EDIT: I'm surprised that his comments do not in some way violate his agreement with Sony to even talk about hacking Sony.

It's also amusing that they failed to mention that a couple years ago, hackers used a back door through Bungie's website and actually stole CC info from XBL users. This ridiculous notion that ANY online service's security is air tight needs to be put to rest.

Agreed.

A lot of the heat on Sony is coming from the momentum of the whole OtherOS removal->GeoHot lawsuit->Anonymous attack->current PSN outage->Personal information being acquired situations. If these were all incidents that had occurred with some respite in between, I do believe that people wouldn't be as highly extreme as they are being now. But I could be entirely wrong, too.

What a mess......I dont care what happens to Sony - their arrogance makes them their own, worst enemy, IMO. I do feel extremely bad for all the hardworking developers that make great games on the PS3.

I mean, this cannot help sales for Uncharted 3 when it hits

Yeah but XBL wasn't hacked. It went down for a day (or two) due to membership overload during the holidays of that year (I believe it was 08). With that said, people are going overboard with this whole "PSN downtime" fiasco. They are making seem like it's the end of the world (of playstation). I'm keeping both my consoles (360 & ps3). I have the best of both worlds. I find it odd that Kaz is going to address the media on a Sunday.
